I see a lot of this crap. It's even better when an 18-wheeler does it to a car.

2013-12-20 10:19:04 AM
Many, many moons ago I heard through the grape vine that a lot of the jack knife situations  are caused when a car cuts off the truck and the trucker hits the brakes too hard.

That was some pretty good driving by the trucker imo. Kept his cool, moved the car over to the verge, it's like he had God, or perhaps an orangutan, as his co-pilot.

How did that car not shatter into pieces or spinoff. That's impressive. The getting to the spot though, not so much.

2013-12-20 10:44:36 AM
I always give 18-wheelers a lot of room when merging, or merge and speed up drastically to give them space. Some of those companies fire the driver even if it ends up being my fault.

Just because the merge lane ends, doesn't mean you get to blindly merge. You still have to do so safely. I see this kind of crap so many times -- usually people slam on brakes or swerve to avoid the merging moron, but trucks don't really have either of those options.

There's an ambulance chasing lawyer in my area that runs commercials to say "more and more, people are being involved in serious accidents with semis and tractor trailer rigs" .  This sends me into a rage.  The reason is people more and more are acting like a tractor/trailer, loaded or not, has the same braking and handling attributes a car/suv/minivan does.  People more and more are driving like complete morons around them, and are causing crashes and getting hurt.

Fark them.

Why yes, my father was a truck driver.  4 million miles in his career, and no serious accidents when he retired.  Hundreds of close calls.

Sorry, just venting for no reason.

Please return to your normal Farking.

Yeah, it's the merging vehicle's responsibility to merge safely. Legally, the vehicles already on the highway do not need to do anything to "help" the merging vehicle.

Most of the time, it is some idiot who thinks it is OK to merge on the freeway at 40mph or less. These are the same idiots who spend all day in the cell phone lane, sorry, passing lane (some people think it is the cell phone lane), driving 68mph in a 70mph zone, parallel with some other person, getting upset with all the "morons" behind them, weaving around, flashing their lights and flipping them off.

It doesn't matter how fast I'm going... if I'm passing a group of cars, and somebody is coming up behind me, I get out of their way and let them go (if I can't safely move over, I speed up to do so). I don't get pissed that somebody is slower or faster than me, as long as they are courteous enough to follow the general rules of the road.

Another strange and annoying habit some people have is... when you pass them, because they are going 10mph slower than you, and return to the driving lane... only to have that person speed up and tail you. WTF is up with that? I also am amazed at how many people around here will drive 45mp in a 55mph zone, and continue at 45mph even though it changed to 25mph... Really? You couldn't be bothered to drive the speed limit when we might have not gotten stuck at the last three traffic lights, but now you are ready to mow down kids in a school zone at almost twice the speed limit?

/I have more rants... but this is enough for now

Surprised the minivan didn't get steamrollered.

Clear cut example of one some asshole who thinks people are obligated to move out of their way and let them merge.

There was a story from the small town where I went to high school some years ago.  Parents left town, but first told their teen daughter, you can drive the truck in town, but do *not*, repeat, do *not* take it on the interstate.  So they leave, and not more than 15 minutes later, she picks up two of her friends, and they head for the interstate, because that's the fastest way to get to the nearest city of any size.  First time she'd ever merged onto an interstate.  Right into/under a semi.  Squished all three of them into tomato paste.  Three closed-casket funerals.

/damn kids

I witnessed an event almost identical to this earlier this year on 480 by 77. I happened to glance into my rear view and saw a car get turned by a semi that was cruising in the middle lane. The driver of the car just decided he gots to gets into the left lane NOW, which is a common occurrence in that area - gets on and gets straight to the left lane , wait until you are 200 feet from your exit and attempt to gets to the right lane, fark whomever is in your way..  anyway the car was pinned to the front of the truck and I swear that trucker gave not a single fark for at least 3/4 of a mile and then finally slowly moved over and slowed to a stop. Before he moved over he didn't slow down one bit.
/Loved it!

Wayyyyy back when I worked at an Insurance Auto Auction house, one of our drivers came in and started laughing about what he'd seen on I-69 through the Flint, MI area... a woman had her car pinned under the dock guard of a semi trailer and was being taken on a ride to Port Huron. Apparently she was tailgating, and not respecting that she can't see what is happening beyond the truck, was shocked when the truck suddenly braked for something, and she went... pop... under the guard, and it effectively towed her car. We later learned from a news story that the driver made it all the way to the Canadian border before finding out she was there - and even funnier, she had gotten on the freeway in town to make a short trip two exits down, but ended up an hour away for her troubles.

Cars need to respect truckers... except in Ontario, where they seem to be major douchebags, in my experience.

Truckers are as varied in road manners and driving skills as car drivers.

That's awesome.  I don't care if you want to drive fast/slow/whatever, as long as you don't drive like an asshole.  Want to go slow?  Fine, just get the fark out of the left lane.  Want to drive fast?  Also fine, as long as you're not a lane diving prick that drives six inches off from the bumper of the car in front of you to try to bully them out of the way.  Anyone violating those rules deserves anything that comes to them.

Do they NOT teach people not to merge until you can see the entire vehicle in your rear view mirror?

That's what I learned, anyway.

Of course, I also learned to pull out into the left turn lane at an intersection on green, and TURN left when clear, instead of staying way back behind the crosswalk and SLANTING left when clear.

Would have been more fun if he got over to the side and then just scraped the guy off with the guard rail.

Anyone notice the truck in front of them also pulled over to the same shoulder? He must have seen the action in his rear-view mirror.

The driver of the car was probably posting on Fark

just out of curiosity, would that ruin the minivan?
Or once you gathered your wits would you be able to just drive away?

Some door damage and the tires with a worn spot.
Seats may need to be cleaned.

Good. If you're too stupid to do something as a simple merge, you probably should be taken off the road.
