I read a book about solving these problems:
ecx.images-amazon.com
It was strongly endorsed by the U.S. ambassador to Italy.

Just increase the food subsidies and host more free soccer matches, that will solve the unrest issue.

I love Italy and had hoped to move there one day.  Ive been having such a difficult time finding work here in the States with my degrees that I can't stop myself from dreaming about moving there and working (in archaeology!)  I realize that it's a pipe dream and I will have to be content to just visit the place.   I have friends there who can't find jobs, either.

I have friends in the same situation. If you don't mind doing something else besides archaeology, I'd highly recommend Germany as a place to go. They've weathered the storm, plus bailed out problem countries. They need engineers, IT nerds and nurses badly. Easier jobs to land would be teaching English.

Yeah, it's really not funny though.  Italy, Ireland, Spain and Greece all remain perched on the edge of a precipice, and if one goes, it may very well start a chain reaction, and if you look down at your ankle, you may notice a chain attached to it.  Unless you're a hunter/trapper living in the remote backwoods with no connection to society, you have a chain that stretches across the Atlantic.  If Italy goes, we all go.  2008 again, but probably worse this time.  Probably not fixable.
