Bad press is still press. Make a few snide remarks when you are on a popular show and it just sparks more interest in the show. Seems to me like it is working in their favor.

Yeah, I can see his statements and publicity picking up a few viewers.  Of course they might lose a few viewers too.  They might even gain some gay viewers who will watch just to be outraged.

I've seen a couple of clips.  It's just another stupid reality show,

It's all good when you caricature Southerners as inbred dumbasses and profane hicks, but have one of your creations go off-script and get some pressure group's noses out of joint and the heavens fall. There's nothing more gutless than executives of major corporations, and TV execs are the most gutless of all.

This show has been on for a few years, and I find it hard to believe the producers or A&E are just now finding out that the eccentric redneck patriarch on their reality show indeed has some rather un-progressive views on homosexuality. And while I disagree with his rumination on human sexuality and the Jim Crow era, aren't we all maybe overreacting just a bit?

And A&E is going to own that business if they make good on their threat to walk.

I don't know, man. I don't want to set myself up as an arbiter of taste, or try to tell people what they consume as entertainment.
But that having been said, the effect that "reality television" seems to have on some of it's viewers makes me a little nervous.
I mean, there have been death threats credible enough to concern professionals associated with both American Idol and Dancing with the Stars.
It's a problem when people start thinking that reality TV is reality.
Personally, I think it's amusing that these suburban college boys managed to put their hillbilly act together and market it so successfully, and I applaud their ingenuity. But when people start reading BIG IMPORTANT THINGS into this kind of trivial entertainment, i think it's time for the audience to take a gut check and remind themselves that actual reality is this shiat oty here we deal with every day, and the nonsense on the TV makes a very bad analogy for it.
These guys have both fans and detractors who take them WAY too seriously.

This whole thing may be a mutual decision. The show may be outliving it's shelf life, and A&E would like to get out of it, and maybe the duck brothers are smart enough to want to take their big pile of money and move on to better things. Those beards must really f**king itch by now.

Or not.
I'm about as good at predicting the future as anybody else.

Which is to say, not very.

Who says he went off-script?

A&E knows their core audience, and they know that the quickest way to generate loyalty/merchandise sales is to manufacture some outrage.  I'm not convinced that it was a coincidence that the character said something ignorant and offensive about gays in the same interview that he said something ignorant and offensive about blacks.  Instant backlash, and the regular audience rallies around the family...and goes straight to Wal-Mart to buy merchandise to show their support.  All planned by the A&E execs.

This "scandal" wasn't a misstep.  It was a t-shirt commercial.

This is not about us and not about the first amendment, this is about corporate standards from an employer. If I represent a brand or a company and I say stupid crap that effects negatively on them, they have every right to suspend or fire me. If Jamie Diamond says on CNBC the problem with the US economy is the lack of slaves and that black people were happier then anyway... he's gonna get fired.

I am stunned the shows producers never sat these people down and informed them to keep their redneck mouths shut about hot button topics and screw up the money train, but oh no, this freaking genius is going to set the world strait by pointing out how awesome Jim Crow was and that he is better then gay people because "The Bible". What a gigantic egotistical moron.

Well, the people I've heard from who lean left or center are all saying things like "Stupid remarks. Oh well. A&E has to do what they think is best. Next."

The people on the far right whom I'm hearing from are all "I STAND WITH PHIL! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! FIRST AMENDMENT!!"

It's been a slightly interesting exercise, but not much more. Hopefully the fuss dies soon. We have far more important things to be thinking about.

I think its a travesty that A&E, A&E is the network behind this show.  TLC and the rest of them were young brash networks of mild promise, but A&E was supposed to be made of sterner stuff.  This just continues to reinforce my decision to live without cable TV.

So, by your logic, allowing the Robertsons to act AS THEY NORMALLY ARE on camera amounts to caricaturing them as inbred dumbasses and profane hicks?  Gotcha.  If any, the A+E show likely makes them look more sympathetic as you can easily edit out the more incendiary shiat they say during filming.  I'm not sure how you can logically say the TV execs are gutless, since they are apparently prepared to cancel a highly rated show when one of their performers couldn't keep his mouth shut.  If anything, they should be standing behind the derp to keep the money train flowing.

Never seen this show so don't really care.  Couldn't even tell you what it is about except that they look Southern and have long beards.

The more I learn about that program, the more it strikes me as being a sort of 21st-century bizarro version of the old antebellum minstrel show.  Here's a bunch of funny-looking, funny-sounding folks playing at being unrefined yokels, with their exaggerated accents and ridiculous costumes; tune in and watch the jigaboos sing and dance for your amusement.

2013-12-20 07:57:45 AM
So apparently, you have to be an A&E spokesman before what you say can get you in trouble.

He does have a certain point, I will concede--this show was created to appeal to mouth-breathing yahoos, as well as people who like to point and laugh at mouth-breathing yahoos.  That carries along with it the mindset that Jesus and Santa were white, readin' is fer homos, blah people ain't never been discriminated agin, broads is broads, the only thin' I need tuh know is that the constitution says I kin have guns, I know this one weird trick that's agonna git me into heaven, an' them thar furriners should sit still a-so we kin bomb 'em..

It's the latest cutting-edge technology when it comes to slimy lowest-common-denominator "entertainment."  It comes as no surprise that one of them eventually decided to go beyond the accepted boundary line and talk like an actual, mouth-breathing yahoo.  A&E owns this.

You know:
Fact that he said it: Who cares.
Fact that A&E suspended him for saying it: Outrage!

Noel Ignatiev, a professor at Massachusetts College of Art

"The goal of destroying the white race is simply so desirable, it boggles the mind trying to understand how anyone could possibly object to it. Those who object to my advice, knowingly or perhaps unknowingly, are themselves white supremacists. They wish to go on oppressing and exploiting other races and maintaining their own privileged positions of power. That is the conscious and sometimes subconscious motivation of all of my critics. That is why they object to destroying the cancer of humanity known as the white race. That ugly disease, which dares to call itself a people and a culture. [...]

Obviously, all whites need to be destroyed, but why not start with white males? They are behind most of history's greatest atrocities. Besides, some of the brothers like to bang white women. Eventually white women can breed out, but my feeling is that if you are a white male, you should kill yourself now. If you are a thoughtful person, with a social consciousness who considers himself white, you will consider suicide. It's the right thing to do"

Rap "music" contains some of the most offensive racist and sexist, words you can find but it is openly marketed and sold with little controversy. Freedom of expression you know.

This is also the guy who had a massive man-crush on W until well into Iraq, though, so I'm not sure how much credence we should be giving him overall.

The Alec Baldwin thing is all about him getting a pass from criticism for repeatedly using homophobic slurs because he's a proponent of LBGT rights. Sure that makes him comparatively better than someone who doesn't support those causes, but it's like if we ignored a member of the civil rights movement in the 60's had a habit of calling black people the n-word when he was mad at them: being "for the cause" doesn't excuse bigoted behavior, nor does "I was angry so I just chose the words I knew would cause the greatest harm". Sullivan has never crossed the line into advocating MSNBC fire Baldwin for his comments, just that we should recognize he has a history of making bigoted comments.

Same situation here: yes, recognize that Phil Robertson is making backwards and ignorant comments. Identify him as a bigot. However, anyone who thinks a reality TV star "represents" their network professionally, when half the audience is there to see them say ignorant things that they consider ignorant just doesn't make any sense. Was there any group demanding A&E fire him before they decided to suspend him? Because the reaction I've seen from most of the "left" on the issue has been "how is it controversial? I mean, it's offensive, but it's par the course for what he might be expected to believe based on his age, location, personality, and upbringing."

jso2897: My. That's quite the list of grievances you've got, there.
You sound oppressed.

Just seems we have or priorities screwed.  We are more worried about the utterances of "reality" show star than what is going on in academia for example.  I don't pay the Duck Dudes salary, don't watch his show and have not been duck hunting in decades (not much fun IMHO). But quite frankly since he is not using my money  to do it he can say what he wants.

On the other hand we college professors at public institutions advocating their own  brands of racism and genocide and get paid by us to do it and there is a collective yawn.

Change the setting-if a Military officer  advocated the same things as these college professors would he still have a career?

Yakk: I am stunned the shows producers never sat these people down and informed them to keep their redneck mouths shut about hot button topics and screw up the money train, but oh no, this freaking genius is going to set the world strait by pointing out how awesome Jim Crow was and that he is better then gay people because "The Bible". What a gigantic egotistical moron.

There was some controversy fake or not that the producers had told the cast that there was too much praying.  Regardless of whether it was true A&E fell all over themselves to apologize.  I could see that incident empowering this incident in the minds of the hillbilly cast.

Pants full of macaroni!!: Phil Robertson = the new George Zimmermann

/in that we'll have a hundred threads a day devoted to this yutz and people will defend and hate him in easily predictable ways and ultimately it's all sound and fury signifying nothing

And Martin Bashir got , not suspended, but flat out fired - because that's what HIS employer decided to do. And your list of vestigially related events with outcomes you don't like are not really grievances - I was joking. They're just your personal bullshiat narrative of cherry-picked confirmation bias. Quit whining, grow a pair, and man the f**k up - it's embarrassing to me as a white man ti hear your sorry, effeminate puling.

jjorsett: There's nothing more gutless than executives of major corporations, and TV execs are the most gutless of all.

Sorry libbo, but these job creators got to the top through hard work and gumption.  You need to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and stop trying to tear down HIGH ACHIEVERS just because they have worked harder than you.  I cannot solve your problem, only you can.
