Do people really hate this? Not everything has to be The Godfather. It's a pure popcorn flick, turn brain off, watch wisecracks and explosions, enjoy.

Oh, apparently they do.

I liked Red.  Red 2 was atrocious.  And Bruce Willis must have been forced to do it under contract, because he didn't even bother phoning it in.

2013-12-20 12:54:53 AM
I'm sure it'll be just as much non-serious blow-shiat-up fun as the first two movies. Which means we'll probably get the usual bunch of folks complaining about weak plot and poor acting and such. ;)

Lsherm: I liked Red. Red 2 was atrocious.

Yes. This is the truth.

What's expendable in these movies exactly? The acting or the writing?

2013-12-20 01:11:13 AM
The first one was surprisingly awesome, especially after the depressing mess that was Rambo 2008.

Expendables 2...didn't quite reach the levels of the predecessor, but was still a fun time.

The two things I am curious about over this is Rousey and Gibson. Rousey, because I want to know if she surprises like Gina Carano and Rampage Jackson, and Gibson because I've never seen him go full bad guy. On-screen, anyway.

Some said he did a bad guy in Payback, but he wasn't THE bad guy.  Now he is.  That should be interesting.

If they make a fourth, it'll be Steven Seagal.

Expendables 1 was a decent popcorn flick, but too much slow burn getting to the action.

Expendables 2 was basically a pantomime.  They were practically mugging straight at the camera.  It might have actually worked better if they had dropped the fake names and called each other Arnie, Sly, Bruce, etc. (sort of like how This is the End did it).

Expendables 3 - how many more one-liners are we going to get out of Arnie?

and popcorn flick or not, how can you NOT cringe at the following?

"I'll be back"
"You've been back enough, I'LL be back."
"Yippy-Ki-yay"

Wasn't Mel Gibson the villain in Machete Kills?  I didn't see it, but the greenband trailer looked nice and silly.

Do you not have testicles? The last 30 minutes of Rambo rocked the ass of my face off.

The Expendables would have been a lot better if they were in the same vein as movies like Lockout or Shoot Em' Up. But the series seems to take itself too seriously while still be terribly corny. So basically just like every 80's and 90's action movie out there. And the only reason to ever watch those is to laugh at how bad they are and how everything explodes because explosions.

2013-12-20 04:14:44 AM

60/70yr old action heroes... yaaay... excellent cinema...

not....

You're right. "Rambo" was the manliest manly thing of manhood, and if farking rocked.

The last 30 minutes can't ever hope to make up for the first 60-70.  Had the first two thirds of that movie been a continuous loop of a pack of kittens being tossed into an industrial shredder and the ensuing, immediate aftermath, it probably would have been slightly more cheerful than what happens in Rambo.  By the time Rambo gets up off of his apathetic ass long enough to actually do something, enough atrocities have been witnessed and implied that it's a matter of endurance just getting through to the finish.  And then Rambo doesn't do enough in his own movie.  He rips out a throat, shoots a couple of people with arrows, and then spends 9/10ths of the final battle behind a mounted MG.  I gave more of a damn about the sniper character than I did Rambo.

I realize he's not exactly top billing, or one of the main guys, but .. Kelsey Grammar in an Expendables flick?

Harrison Ford looks extremely uncomfortable in the end of that shot.  Can't tell if it's disgust or alzheimer's, but he just has a look on his face like "why am I here?"

That line made me laugh. Coupled with the two of them driving around in a shoe with the door ripped off... and the fact that Chuck Norris just seems to be walking around randomly shooting people, like it's his holiday fun... it's not a great film but gosh darn it it was very funny. Intentionally or not, I don't care.

I think Expendables 2 was better than the original, probably because I had wildly different expectations from other people.

When I first heard about The Expendables, I was expecting a tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top throwback to 80's macho action films. And while I enjoyed Expendables 1 a lot (enough to buy the blu ray), I felt like it was a little undercooked. It basically felt like Rambo 2008 rehashed with an ensemble cast. Which was fine, I enjoyed Rambo 2008. But it wasn't what I wanted.

Expendables 2 was everything I wanted from the first movie and more. I farking loved it.

I will be seeing Expendables 3.

Expendables 2 was mostly shiat because of Chuck Norris. He chewed some serious scenery.

I highly doubt it. With all the bad blood between between Van Damme and Seagal and Van Damme playing in the 2nd one pretty much guaranteed Seagal won't touch the series.

That one line Arnie presumably ad-libbed about Rambo while appearing in a movie starring Sly Stallone really gave the fourth wall way too much of a massive middle finger for my tastes, otherwise I loved how self-aware those movies are. Looking forward to getting messed up and seeing 3.

C'MON!!! People do really expect high cinema when it comes to this.

The Expendables series is AWESOME and almost everything a good 80's action movie should be.

There is a time and place for mindless fun, for over the top action and explosions for the sake of it, and there is a time and place for meditative, atmospheric arthouse cinema.

The love for one doesn't diminish the appreciation for the other.

But if someone has to be a pompous ass, I'm sure that Terrence Malick will be filming some unbearable borefest soon enough (but it has some neat cinematography and it's Oh so deep and meaningfull...).

/fark Terrence Malick...

Mark me down as a fan of Last Action Hero, as well.  The kid was mighty annoying, but the tongue-in-cheek action was farking awesome

Benedict: I wonder if you could help me?
Mechanic: Sure, what do ya need?.
Benedict: Well...
[benedict shoots him. He listens for a while, looks at his wristwatch, then shouts]
Benedict: Hello? I've just shot somebody, I did it on purpose.
[listens some more, still nothing]
Benedict: I said, I have just murdered a man, and I wish to confess!
[listens some more, someone tells him, "Hey, shut the fark up, down there!". He looks pleased]

Why do I have to become sub-human to enjoy a movie?  Our mentality is the only thing that distinguishes us from low animals, and you are saying we need to 'turn that off' to enjoy the movie.  When you set your expectations so low and happily pay for it, the movie producers will just give you more and more of it.  Why not aspire for something better?  Is that too human for you?

2013-12-20 11:31:54 AM
How can they be called the Expendables, and NONE OF THEM DIE? Even the dude who betrays them and gets shot through the heart (and you're to blame)? As someone else said, it takes itself way too seriously. There's a reason we stopped watching these movies. However, I did love the complete disregard for the Law of Conservation of Henchmen. Sneak up on room w/ 8 bad guys. Burst in, kill 6 bad guys. 6 bad guys run away out of room..

I don't hate the expendables films at all. I enjoy them. But the problem with "turn your brain off" films, is that they cause Hollywood execs to never make a film that let's you turn your brain back on.
