Um, go to Hell, you ignorant, racist bigots?

I notice they didn't address the racist stuff he said. Making this about gays is stupid. I'm a gay man and I was all "Meh" about his gay comments.

His racist stuff was MUCH more damaging.

That's a harsh thing to say about A&E.

A&E won't cave. That show is dead, and WILL be picked up by another network very quickly.

Depends on how Ironclad the A&E non-compete clause is and how good of lawyers they had when they signed the contract.

Yes. A&E filmed this man over the course of dozens of episodes and amassed hundreds if not thousands of hours of footage, only a tiny fraction of which ever made it on the air, and they had no idea, none, that he harbored these views. They're utterly shocked to learn that one of the main characters of their flagship show harbors views that could be construed as homophobic and/or racist and certainly never would have associated themselves with him if only they'd known. They would say more about how horrified and shocked and appalled they are but they have not yet been able to rouse themselves from their fainting couch and would like you to keep them in your heart and mind during this difficult time. In the meanwhile, tune in next week for the premier of "Swamp Huntin' Confederates," a light-hearted show about swamp-dwelling good ol' boys who hunt alligators in between their appearances at Civil War re-enactments.

With the brand they have? I am 100% sure a network would come up with WHATEVER amount of money A&E wanted as a payoff, and they'd still profit from it. That show is ridiculously popular and these comments will not hurt their brand.

Maybe I'm a bit conspiracy minded, but could this whole thing be one big stunt?  Including A&E's reaction?

While his comments offend and abhor me, what they are fighting for is money. If they do the show without him, it hurts their brand because they would be seen by the flock as appeasing the "left" or whatever.

They own that brand, even if A&E owns the rights. They have so much clout right now, they can pretty much do whatever the f*ck they want.

That entire PR was a heads-up on them switching networks and keeping Pop in the show and moving on in weeks.

They might be rednecks, but they ain't stupid.

Also interesting how this happened a week before before Christmas.

Christians are always crying they are being attacked, then here they are starting shiat right on their own holiday.

If their show is cancelled, I can't imagine them having a new program on another network anytime soon. Between contract wrangling, injunctions, counter-injunctions etc., it should be awhile before the smoke clears enough for another series to get going. By then, their hardcore fans will still be with them, but more casual viewers will have moved on. My guess, anyway. A&E (along with their parent company) has no shortage of corporate clout and access to as many lawyers as they need.

Then again, maybe they'll cave. Disney and Hearst are both pretty conservative. Maybe it will all come down to an accounting issue.

While the younger guys play up the redneck angle, they're all pretty intelligent.  The old racist homophobe has a master's degree.  The son that runs the company has a bachelor's and took a small one-product business and built it into an empire.  They were millionaires and successful businessmen long before the show came around.

Well then, it sounds like they're sick of fame, want to go back to just piling more dough on the pallets of Franklins in their shed, and decided to become hillbilly racist homophobe martyrs on the way out the door..

I don't care if it's Mr. Duck or Snooki, or Sham Wow, or Sarah Palin  or the Lardassians: quit paying attention to these reality show attention whores. Their opinions are less than worthless, and they don't contribute anything to society. They're not worth your time.

Me too.  The homophobic comments sound like your garden-variety "Hate the sin, love the sinner" crap fundies spew all the time.  The stuff about black people was far worse in my mind. It really got into true white supremacist territory, with the notion that black people are not equipped, intellectually, to handle the same things that white people can, and they were happier singing Negro spirituals in the fields.  That's some antebellum shiat right there.

2013-12-19 11:43:04 PM
I think A&E will want to keep the show and Phil, what they are doing is just damage control guised as taking a stand. A&E knew the type of people they were working with when they created the show, and more importantly, they knew the audience they were creating the show for.

We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right.

The day Phil gets thrown in jail for something he said, we'll talk about his constitutional rights.

I took it as "black people were happier when they worked instead of being on welfare", which has its own problems, but not quite as Klanish.

Yep.

No way A&E kills the cash cow (duck?).

There will be umming and awwing from both sides and in the end, A&E will graciously let whoever said the stupid shiat stay on the show and there will be another season and it will get even higher ratings than before.

2013-12-19 11:54:41 PM
I wonder what's actually in their contract? I know, I know, everyone says they're real smart fellers, not dumb rednecks. But running a duck call business is a lot different than running a network.

2013-12-19 11:54:48 PM
Since I've already had the debate with a couple of friends, I might as well carry it over to here.

I will preface this by stating I strongly disagree with the Robertsons and don't watch Duck Dynasty.  In no way am I defending his beliefs (though he does have a right to say them and I acknowledge that this is NOT a freedom of speech issue that all the right-wingers are bringing up).

That being said, I think A&E jumped the gun on dumping him.  They've filmed them countless hours and had to know their beliefs.  The decision to dump him was a knee-jerk emotional reaction, not  a business decision.  I'm betting that most people that watch Duck Dynasty know that they're fundie Christians and many people that watch probably align themselves with those beliefs (hence the controversy).  I think A&E would have been more prudent to issue a disclaimer and to wait to see if ratings dropped or advertisers pulled as a result of the interview.  Then there would be less controversy and little debate as to the decision being a prudent business decision.

It's a bugaboo I have.  Any time someone faces consequences for saying something stupid, they generally say, "I have a right to free speech!" Which is true, but 1st Amendment outlines one's relationship to the government, not one's freedom from the consequences of spouting off one's pigf*ck-ignorant opinions.

I don't think the guy should be shot.  But if A&E has decided they don't want their brand to be associated with overt racism and homo-hate, then that's their prerogative.

That's the thing, though... A&E doesn't really have a brand since they abandoned Arts and Entertainment, but if they did, it probably would be the bigoted racist redneck demographic, as seen by them hiring Dog the Bounty Hunter, the Duck guys, and airing that damned intervention show and those shows about Storage farkers.

They should just embrace it and change the name to A&E: Arya&Entertainment.

The poor oppressed christians that don't understand the constitution have been far far more annoying and inflammatory than the old redneck that grew up in the south in the 1950s.

Good! I really do hope they can this p.o.s.. The whole thing is an even larger embarrassment to every American than Honey Boo Boo's family. I've never heard Mama June badmouth gays, say that blacks were happy before they got civil rights, or try to use their media soapbox to proselytize Republican JAY-ZUSS!.

2013-12-20 12:33:39 AM
Meh, they exhausted their plots.  The second "takin' the ladies huntin'" episode jumped the shark.    The canned pig hunt really let me down (yes, this libby lib liked the show).  I enjoyed it, but I tired of it about a month ago.  That's the problem with one hit wonders.

They'll still remain rich and get richer off of the merchandise.  A&E might cave, but it doesn't really matter.  Much like Chapelle Show, they still own 50+ episodes which they can repeat for the next ten years.  Willie and Si were the only good actors on the show.  The wives, Phil, and Jase were terrible at delivering their lines.

I am surprised they went out in a blaze like this though.  This might have been the best marketing decision they could have made.  Going out like martyrs at the top of their popularity is certain to lock down the merchandise revenue stream for the holidays.  If you're a Chinese contract manufacturer of Duck Dynasty beer koozies, this is figuratively like Christmas (or literally like Golden Week).
