(MSNBC)   In his last speech as mayor, Bloomberg explains that there is no wealth inequality in New York because the poor have air conditioning and cars. Refrigerators too, presumably, although those weren't mentioned   (msnbc.com) divider line 54

Cars in NYC?  That is a sign of true wealth...unless you're living in them, of course.

He was not an entirely ineffective mayor.  There are real accomplishments to point to.  But to ignore the growing income inequality is just plain hubris.  He wasn't purely responsible for it; But his policies certainly didn't help.

And why does a politician need a "victory lap?"  Only an arrogant asshole needs to self-congratulate.

Well, they're not poor poor.

There is no income inequality in New York because poor people commute from Hoboken.

2013-12-19 08:44:02 AM
Poor people in NY have cars?  I doubt that. As to the A.C., that could be pretty necessary in the summer in a 4th floor walk-up, I imagine.

2013-12-19 08:44:34 AM
The Joads had a car too, I guess they just didn't realize how rich they were.

Well, I guess he'll have more time to devote to important causes...like eliminating illegal guns.  And, incidentally, mandating that almost all guns be deemed illegal.

Eh, yeah, what I know about NYC, Manhattan, and New York State could fill encyclopedias...if they printed those, any more.  ;)

Ugh.  Typical New Yorker.    The poor in Tupelo, Mississippi have cars and air conditioning, dumbass.  He's not a douche for pointing this out about NYC, but he's a douche for thinking it makes NYC any more special than any other city in the U.S.

Since he was talking specifically about NYC I think we can at least give him a pass for not bringing up the plight of Tupeloians.

I used to like Bloomsborg, but the last year he has said some stupid shiat.

Christ.

I'm almost certain that the rate of car ownership among the poor in NYC is lower than the rate of car ownership almost anywhere else in this country.

And air conditioning isn't necessarily that common, either.  To get all anecdotal, I've had a handful of friends in NYC apartments without air conditioning.

I'm sure there is an Obama thread somewhere you can go stomp around and be miserable in.  We're talking about out of touch rich New Yorkers in here.

I hope the new guy spends his first two months un-doing all of the stupid sh*t that that midget misogynist did, starting with the beverage cup limits.

I can see the poor having a car, but how in the hell can they afford parking in NYC? I know people with pretty well paying jobs in NYC who can't get parking.

Nabb1: I can see the poor having a car, but how in the hell can they afford parking in NYC? I know people with pretty well paying jobs in NYC who can't get parking.

Street parking.  You have to move your car at least twice a week for street cleaning, and budget at least a thousand a year in parking tickets.

My first thought as well.

I know people that pay 3X more for their parking space than I do for my house.

And I have a nice house.

Be prepared to be greatly disappointed then.

Bloomberg was a complete, total, and utter douchenozzle of the highest order. If anyone deserved to be beaten 24x7 with a sock full of human excrement it's Bloomie. However, his replacement will make the city worse, as hard as that is to believe.

How delightfully opulent. Just think how pampered you must be that your vehicle needs to be air conditioned while it's parked so that it's as comfortable as possible for the 5 minutes it would normally take to cool down.

I would say the New Yawkers that voted for him for three terms deserve to be beaten too.

Bloomberg explains that there is no wealth inequality in New York

You're a lying asshole, subby.

And he has genuine achievements to tout. His mayoralty helped stabilize the financial sector after the trauma of 9/11, when some feared the industry could move en masse to New Jersey. Crime is down 20% since he took office, and high-school graduation rates have risen by 40%. The city also has become a leader in efforts to address climate change.

He was a good mayor.

1st of all, you mean Reagan phones. That "Obama phone" garbage has been shot down so many times that anyone still repeating it is only providing evidence that they have made the choice to be a willfully ignorant dumbass.

2nd of all, I'm sure they would too, and I'm glad that our country can take care of some of its poor better than that country can take care of theirs. I don't want America to be anything like a third-world shiathole which couldn't give two shiats about their poor and cannot properly protect their citizens. We still do have people who can't afford enough food, people who can't afford proper shelter and proper health care has been almost completely out of reach of many of the poor for a long time too (thankfully, now we have the ACA)... and most of the poor in our country work honest, often very difficult, jobs and yet still can't afford basic care for themselves. Many of the people who are legal US residents that pick our food have to survive on farking foodstamps because we've spent decades electing people who have happily allowed modern day robber barons to dictate government policy. That's simply wrong. No one working an honest days work should be paid so little they can't afford to care for themselves without government help.... but that's the world we let what passes for "conservatives" these days talk us in to creating.
