Larry Lujack "Off the Record" from 1979:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

I left Chicago in 92. Peak comedy radio era.
Larry Lujack - Animal Stories.
Steve Dahl & Garry Meier.
Kevin Matthews and the rest of the line-up, I think on the LOOP?
Jonathan Brandmeier, before he acheived peak douche.

I moved to New York and all there was was.....Stern.
Between those guys and WXRT, damn did I miss Chicago radio.

Good Night Funnyman.

I remember the ads for Lujack when  I was 5 or 6 years old. He was just a part of the fabric of Chicago.

Growing up in Chicago this was maybe one step down from Wally Phillips. Wally was for old people though.

Given that Uncle Lar lived on seemingly nothing but coffee and cigarettes all through the 80s, I'm suprised he made it this far.

He called me on the phone once.
While I was hosting a radio show from our HS.
(we had a radio station in the Chicagoland suburbs)
We played no Top 40, only the good stuff, you know, Tull, Black Sabbath, ELP (yeah, I know...) etc. NO FREE BIRD!
anyways he just called in one day to say he listened and liked what we played, keep on rockin' etc.
and that was it.

QFT.  He was as much a part of Chicago as Mike Royko or Studs Terkel.

RIP funny guy.

and I am closer to Maine East now!
We could broadcast on the weekends into the evening. Unsupervised!  We had keys to the building.
They wouldn't do that today.
I would leave a party on Saturday and tell everyone I was going to host my show and I would just play requests.  The party would call in and I would just leave the phone off the hook for them during my shift.
10 watts of power!

Awesome! I was only on air once, the rest of the time I was getting credit for wasting time before I helped with setup for plays and musicals in the theater.

Yep, The Loop.  I would listen to that all day as a kid.  Loved Steve and Garry.

Rest in Peace Uncle Lar.  I'll have to go dig out my Animal Stories LP's when I get home.

Larry hated Steve & Garry with a passion, and the feeling was mutual, even when they were all on WLS FM 94.7. He could be credited with being the Grandfather of All Shock Jocks. At a time when DJs were all nice-nice with each other, Lujack didn't mince words and actively hated on other local radio personalities like WGN AM 720's Wally Phillips. He had an offbeat, often sarcastic and acerbic sense of humor. He never fully hid his depressed personality and used it as fuel on-air.

He got me up and out of bed as a kid with schtick like "Animal Stories", for which he'll always be remembered (he and "Li'l Tommy" Edwards made a few records of Animal Stories that sold well locally). Back when I was a freshman in high school, I wrote a letter to the segment which he read on-air.

Rest well, Uncle Lar. You will be remembered through the ages.
