The comments were great, especially when the writer sorted out where the sudden rush of said White Knights came from.

It still amazes me that after all these years there are still old conservative men who still believe with all their black, cold hearts that if they just post the perfect internet comment one night the doorbell will ring and there will stand Sarah Palin wearing a teddy made from actual bear and holding an American-flag-logoed Mule Tamer 5000 -- she'll wink, she'll screechbleat "I'm here to thank of those Real American men for speeching those internet freedoms from socialistics" and even in the fantasy she'll get a credit card imprint for SarahPAC.

I can't believe that sentence is in the book.

I can neither believe the hate that Sarah Palin engenders in libs, nor can I believe the amount of idiotic White Knighting that people will do on her behalf.

She's a non-entity. She's irrelevant. Her views are a regurgitated mix of Rush Limbaugh talking points, rugged-American fantasy glurge, and Norman Rockwell paintings. There's nothing of import there at all.

Just ignore her.

Article worth reading simply for the coinage of "argument ad Palinium", i.e. totally nonsensical word salad.

Aren't editors supposed to fix that? Or are they purposely letting her embarrass herself?

There's something to that. For some reason, people decided to ignore Glen Beck and look what happened... He's about as visible these days as a polar bear pube in a snow drift. These people live off the hate they create (on both sides of the political spectrum). If we can learn to ignore their rantings the same way we ignore the rantings of the crazy guy on the corner we'll all live happier, more productive lives.

I was always taught as an editor that you aren't supposed to change what authors are trying to say; you are just helping them say it.

If what she is trying to say is incredibly stupid..... well.....

Actually, think of it this way - this is the cleaned up, scrubbed up version of what she GAVE the editor.

Buying guns is both legal and dangerous

Actually, buying guns is no more dangerous than buying a gallon of milk, I'm not sure where Alex Fantone buys guns, but there's no inherent danger in buying a gun.

At all.

Turning the page...

Here's a picture of Sarah Palin's grandson-who for a time was the most famous fetus on the planet (2008, Republican National Convention)-and a quote:

"'All this for me? And I wasn't even very good!'

-My grandson, Tripp Easton Mitchell [Johnston], upon seeing the presents beneath the Christmas tree, 2012"

All this for me-and I wasn't even that good. Translate that into Latin and it could be on the Palin family's coat of arms.

This terrible review was greened and Dan Savage's was red lit. Boo on you, mods.

"Here I learn something I didn't know and, if I were Sarah Palin, something I wouldn't want anyone to know. But Sarah hustles this fact to the front of the book because she sure as hell wants us to know it: Sarah surprised Todd with a "nice, needed, powerful gun" for Christmas in 2012. It was a "small act of civil disobedience," Palin writes, prompted by "the anti-gun chatter coming from Washington."

What was inspiring that anti-gun chatter in Washington in December of 2012? Oh, right: Twenty children and six teachers were shot dead in their classrooms by a deranged asshole with a "powerful gun." And before the grieving mothers and fathers of Newtown, Connecticut, could put their dead children in the ground, Sarah Palin ran out gun shopping. Buying Todd a gun in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary was "fun," Palin writes-and, again, an act of "civil disobedience." Because gun nuts are a persecuted minority.

This paragraph about gun shopping in December of 2012-one first grader at Sandy Hook was shot 11 times-ends with Palin bragging about her tits. I'm not kidding. Okay, I have to put the book down.

I'm five pages into Good Tidings and Great Joy and... Jesus farking Christ... I have got to put down this toxic little shiatstain of a book. I'm going to go wash my eyes out with hydrogen peroxide. Be right back.
"

2013-12-19 12:19:55 PM
Maybe it's because I'm the wrong kind of Christian for the Palinites, but when I would want a book to talk about the "heart of Christmas", I would not consult a politician. I might ask my priest for some advice, but he'd probably just send me to the Bible and ask if I were planning on helping out at one of the seasonal charitable events. I mean, it's like he thinks we're all supposed to live up to that stuff, even year-round. Okay, maybe I can understand why Palin's approach might be more popular.

I think liberals (myself included) worry about her because she's a fun-house mirror substitute for what could one day be passed off as competent Republican leadership.

I worry that at some election within the next 20 years, we're gonna face-palm and say "I can't believe 52 percent of the voters think SHE'LL be a good president."

She's a vampire of stupid who constantly needs garlic and sunlight thrown at her.

2013-12-19 03:08:51 PM
I used to think it was sexist to claim that all those conservative men white-knighting for Palin were just in it for the fantasy of it. To have liberals (my side) claim that conservatives were only voting for her because she was a woman felt like, somehow, a nasty assertion, a sexist oversimplification unbecoming of progressive individuals. Surely they supported her because of her folksy ignorance, her "She says what we're all thinking!" Limbaughian charm, and they were protecting not her gender but her politics when they grew nasty and defensive when people were critical of her.

But now she's putting on some years. She's pushing fifty now, with all the wrinkles and sags that implies, and she's also got some body image problems that have put her on some very strange diet paths, so her skin doesn't fit quite right. Don't get me wrong; she's aging as gracefully as any middle-aged mother might. But a neocon sex fantasy isn't going to include a 50 year old.

Simultaneous with that has been the fading of her star. Don't tell me that her career couldn't have been impressive; a radio show on Coast to Coast AM, for instance, to go with the regular book deals. She could have been a Crossfire host. We know that there's no bottom to the well of human stupidity; with a degree in communications and a cult of personality she could stay a public figure as long as she wanted.

Correlation may not equal causation, but it does look like the fading of her looks is simultaneous with the fading of her star. She isn't pretty enough to turn the heads of the young Republicans and the creaky Baby Boomers anymore; they're all into Megan Kelly these days. So maybe there is a grain of truth in the ultimately sexist assertion that people voted for her looks.
