Of Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, and Weird Al Yankovic, I think Weird Al does the best.

I was on campus turning in some stuff for the nursing program and missed him by about 20 minutes. I got to see him at the Brady; it was great.

Back in 2000, I was in a music store at MacArthur Mall in Norfolk, VA. I heard the manager say, "Excuse me, sir, drinks are not allowed in the store." I look up to see who he was kicking out. Much to my surprise, it was Al! I went up to the manager and told him he just kicked out "Weird" Al Yankovic! Saw him in concert that night and met him after the show. We had a bit of a laugh about that.

/that was the second time I actually got to meet him. First time he autographed my arm... had it tattooed there.

FirstNationalBastard: He probably didn't like it, but he never left Scotti Brothers.

Scotti Bros. was bought by some company, which was bought by another company, which was bought by Sony, and that's how Al wound up on Volcano records, which is owned and distributed by Sony, and why Al sued Sony for his money.

Ah, you're right. That's odd then because he said all that about Scotti Bros publicly. Normally you don't biatch about a company that you still work for to the press.

Well, let's be fair... Al was Scotti Brothers.

Who else did they have... Survivor? How many repackagings of Eye of the Tiger can you do before it quits being profitable?

Al probably could have molested the Scotti Brothers with Twinkie Wiener Sandwiches, and the only thing they would have cared about is whether the next album would be in on time.

I actually bought his last two albums via iTunes assuming he'd get the royalties, so if I cannot assume artists get their iTunes royalties I might as well pirate the albums.

We, uh, we all need to have the entire discography queued up and ready to go for, umm, you know, that thread on Saturday mornings, if that's okay by you. If he can't be part of the Superb owl, he ought to be given the shot at a voice acting gig as a background p...erson.

Mr. Popeil was such a perfect style parody, I couldn't believe it wasn't using an actual B-52s song.

Different album, but I'm still amazed how well he nailed the Devo sound for Dare to Be Stupid. Weird Al doesn't get half the props he deserves for his musical talent. I don't think most people realize how many of his songs are not direct parodies of individual songs.

The originals and style parodies were always my favorites. My absolute favorite song of his is "The Good Old Days". The juxtaposition James Taylor's style with lyrics like "Oh I'll never forget the day I bashed in his head Well you should've seen the look on his face " never fail to crack me up

No, just a vegan who doesn't drink or do drugs.  He is the most straight-laced musician out there.  He should perform at Super Bowl L with no questions asked.

He writes brilliant parodies, more brilliant style parodies, and original songs that are still pretty good.  Sony was so stupid to not pay him for his best, most popular album of the 90's (Running with Scissors) and only the 3rd album to win him a grammy (Poodlehat) with some of the most brilliant styles (NIN=Germs; Frank Zappa=Genius in France) and parodies (Saga Begins, Coach Potato, Grapefruit Diet; All About the Pentiums, eBay) he has ever put out.  Weird Al Yankovic should be paid what he wants and more for the joy and non-controversy he produces.

Actually, I theorize that since his musical career usually outlives those of the artists he parodies, that there is a bit of 'soul eating' going on.  Want more proof?  He parodied Michael Jackson more than once...look at how drastically MJ changed after each parody.

*grins*

Eat Miley next, Al...  Do a whole album parody just to speed up the process, please...

jake3988: MrEricSir * * Smartest * Funniest 2013-12-18 10:12:41 PM He left his previous label, Scotti Brothers, because they issued compilations without his consent and tried to control the content of his albums. Seriously, fark record labels. I'm looking forward to a future without them.
=========================================

Once his contract wraps up (after this upcoming album), he has already posted on a blog entry that he's leaving record labels and just releasing stuff himself.

Because,
A) They do this kinda shiat to him.
B) He wants to be able to release songs RIGHT when they're relevant and not have to wait a long time.
C) It's... the future. Digital age biatch.

OTOH, he said in his Reddit AMA in one response that he was just sort of thinking out loud when he said that he might go to an all-digital a la carte release system. In a separate response he said releasing things that way for the first half of Alpocalypse didn't work out too well, and he wasn't likely to do that again.

So...we'll see.

I think the problem with that was releasing half the album a year early. I waited until the whole thing was released before I bought it.

I wonder, though, if this would affect any future parodies. He did a parody of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" and called it "You're Pitiful." He had Blunt's permission and had written and recorded the song and it was all set to go on "Straight out of Lynwood." However, Atlantic Records lawyers at the last minute said Al  couldn't do the song (though legally he can...) and that pushed back the release of the album several months. That's why when you watch the video for "White and Nerdy" and he's talking about Wikipedia, the Wiki page is for Atlantic Records and the page reads "Atlantic sucks!!"
