Big changes for Catholics, Anglicans, Episcopalians, Lutherans and Presbyterians are OK with this, Unitarians don't care, the right wing Protestants go nuts. Just another day in the life of Pope Francis.

The U.S. right-wing protestants have poisoned the attitudes of a lot of U.S. Catholics.  They are indistinguishable, in spite of the official positions of the church on some things.

This isn't really true.

This is more accurate.

There is nothing inherently more compassionate about going out among the people and walking with them. And no one should ever mistake compassion or sympathy with agreement.

Pretty much.  For a long time they were shunned by the U.S. right wing protestants but wanted to be part  of their "social club".  Then they found groups to "hate" together, and the rest is history.  Same with a lot of conservative Jews.

My local parish has had two young priests (one left, replaced by #2)... both were hard-lined, no compassion types who turned so hard right that they broke the steering column... All they do is rant about abortion during their sermons.

Problem with the RCC is that things go so f'd that the only ones taking the vows now are hard cores looking to purge the church of the heretics.  Francis is pretty much spitting in their eyes and telling them to get their head out of their ass, follow Jesus's teachings (like the meme... if people think Francis is too liberal, they should have met Jesus) and chill the f out.

So I can only assume that Ol' Holy Frankie isn't all that popular with the young pastors.

Don't know about that. The priest in my mother's little Louisiana town is from India. He might be OK with the new Pope.

The bishops, generally, are NOT.  Ask the nuns.

They've gotten to that point in part by playing the power game well, which was fine when it was PJPII or Benedict at the helm.  That said when I was growing up our bishop, then archbishop, was originally a priest in my church and was a pretty decent guy. But loudly progressive, notsomuch.

Yep.

saltandlighttv.org
http://douthat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/02/liberal-catholics-in-the -a ge-of-francis/

And there's a lot of former Catholics too, many of whom finally threw up hands and left because the social justice (read liberal) aspects of Catholicism have been pushed aside by the bishops over the past number of years.  Technically 'former Catholic' is the second largest single religious group in the US, after "Catholic". 10% of Americans are 'former Catholics'.

So if some of those start heading back...

I don't think Burke ever called for excommunication. He did, however, say that the sacrament should be denied to John Kerry and, I think, Nancy Pelosi.

You're right. Now they're just trying to clean up the huge mess they've created all these years because they know people, especially younger people, are opening their eyes and finally seeing what a fraud they really are.

The real question is Why now? especially now that we're getting closer to End Times?

True, the rest of the world is a bit more compassionate, but consider that attendance was down all over. Pope Francis isn't acting like a high and mighty, he's acting like someone people can relate to, part of what I think drew people to Christianity back when it was spanking new.

If nothing else, I'd say Tommy Tiernan predicted where awesome priests come from:

Foreign countries.

The priest at my parent's church, relatively young, said '...if you think God put more than a billion people on this planet just to let them burn in hellfire then, my son, you are mistaken. The Lord is compassionate, above all else, and he will not turn his back on them. Everyone serves their place in God's plan.'

He was referring to Muslims and the Chinese. He was talking to a local 'bagger complaining about Christmas service two years back.
