(SFGate)   Remember the SF school that suspended a 1st grader for wishing an atheist teacher "Merry Christmas"? Yeah that story is originally from a fake news site. Which hasn't stopped a real school with a similar name from being flooded with complaints   (sfgate.com ) divider line

You're always going to have things like this happen when there's a sizeable subset of the population just looking to be outraged over something.

It's funny that the folks who make such a fuss over posting the 10 Commandments in our courtrooms feel perfectly free to bear false witness when it suits them.

I'm an atheist and I wished every single one of my employees a merry Christmas or happy holidays while handing out turkeys this week.  I know for a fact that some of them do not celebrate Christmas but I don't keep track of which and I only mixed it up so I didn't feel like a broken record.

Let's make sure everyone ripping this throws out there that "it's just one isolated incident, they don't represent all Christians". Because that's all I read in the similar fraud stories with homosexual waiters.

Being an asshole, I kind of wish I was the guy whose job it was to respond to that stuff on behalf of the school. I bet I could cram a lot of "fark you, asshole" into a few pithy business-letter sentences.

Nope. There were over 400 posts, and every single one was that exact same comment. It is a verifiable fact.

The entire "War on Christmas" is fake. So, by extension, this story was obviously fake - there was no need to check the source.

And yet waves of Good ChristiansTM were happy rage at people and threaten violence.

I guess when you're gullible enough to believe in magic the internet is a very dangerous place for you.

Among the angry e-mailers was the Rev. Craig Donofrio of the "Messenger of Good News" radio, KFUO.org, in St. Louis.

"Thank you for your monumental blunder, it will provide me weeks of material on my show," he wrote to Argonne's real principal, Cami Okubo. "Keep up the terrible work. It makes my job so much easier! MERRY CHRISTMAS! Craig."
Only later did Donofrio realize he had been duped.

"It is sad that people make up such stories and agitate others into outrage in such a way," he said in an e-mail to The Chronicle on Tuesday, adding that he had apologized to the principal. "I was very happy that I did fact-checking before going on air with this story, and it has not been discussed on-air.

Maybe you should have done that fact checking before sounding off like an asshole in the email? You ever stop to think that the principal might have enough bullshiat going on without adding YOURS to the pile?

For fair consideration, those who believed the story to be real have stated that the story is quite believable due to the numerous reports of similar incidents that really did occur and that were not hoaxes.

Or, at least, they assumed those other reports to be of incidents that really did occur and that were not hoaxes.

I will give him credit for sacking up and calling back the principal, and for admitting it in this interview, though. He just should have fact checked first, IMHO.

Is that the original source? Because it doesn't read as satire.

First time I heard about this but if I read that without know the source I might assume it's true although not the complete story.

I mean, is it really beyond the pale, when kids have been suspended for a pop tart eaten into a shape that vaguely resembles a hand gun?

Yep.  I know a lot of right wingers who will continue to believe the lies/hoax no matter what.  Still bet even money that he'll fall for the next outrage hoax, though.

That's my favorite part of this (bold).  Isn't that pretty much what he and people like him do all the time?  The whole "War On Christmas" shtick is exactly that.  Stirring up outrage with skewed or outright fake stories about how poor Christians are being trodden upon by their oppressors?   Hey Rev Craig, no one wrote this to agitate and outrage you.  They did it to make fun of you, you hypersensitive prick, so the rest of us could laugh at you.  This is me, laughing at you.  Ha.  Ha.  Ha.

Ditto.  It really isn't worth acknowledging any particular religious or political belief at work.  I don't lie and some people may figure it out I suppose, but generally it's not worth discussing those topics at all.  However, it is a bit sad that it doesn't lead people to believe you are just being discrete or trying to respect everyone's differences... it leads them to assume you believe exactly what they do, regardless of what that is, even if you've never expressed anything of the sort.

I've had people tell me what a wonderful Christian I am and express horror at anything not 200% mainstream, just assuming I agree.  One told me she was shocked to learn someone else was an athiest because "it was almost like they were a real person" so they were surprised they could not tell.  Those are really disheartening conversations.  People will say some vile things at times because they like you and just assume you share the same opinions.
