Never before has a Democrat sent a member of a discriminated class to a bigoted European country that's hosting the Olympics. This is unprecedented, and disrespectful to the ideals of the host nation.

It's different with athletes and delegates. The President doesn't personally pick the athletes. Or were you thinking of someone other than Jesse Owens?

When someone brings up Owens in  this context, I always have to mention this.

Worth repeating. Avery Brundage was a loathsome excuse for a human being.

First, my bonafides:  I did not vote for Obama either time.  I strongly disagree with him on many issues.  I regard the ACA as a fiasco.  The IRS tea party scandal is Nixonian and choosing Kerry for State continues a long culmination of foreign policy miscues.

I am also agnostic on the gay marriage debate and do not regard it as a burning priority.

That having said, as an American I am proud that he performed this necessary act of defiant contempt towards this bullying thug and his homophobic hysteria.

And that, my friend, is how you do it. You don't boycott. You do whatever it is you want personally- Obama himself isn't showing up- but the athletes go. It's their moment, you don't take it away from them. They go, they wave the flag, they line up on the field, and- this is the important part- they take every medal they can get their hands on. They make the people they're pissed off at choke down the image of them on top of the medal stand.

The level of homophobia in the ESPN comments on this story have been both disgusting and, sadly, unsurprising.

I fear that the increased level of interconnectivity afforded to all of us through the advent of the Internet is simply going to cause bigots to become more staunch in their ass-backwardsness, because they're no longer being shouted down and treated as social pariahs at every turn.  Now they have a home among like minded assholes, for better or worse.

Maybe it's no different than it's always been, and instead it just exposes the true nature of humans to those of us who were naive enough to have higher hopes.
