What impresses me now, and which I should have seen when he first chose his name, is that he is the first pope to fully grasp the power of symbols in the internet age. He's a much better marketer than I every could have dreamed he would turn out to be.

If the Catholic Church continues on this path, I wonder if they'll dust off the old "anti-Papist" playbook, which has been dormant since the early 60's here in the USA....

The Pope responded to that name-calling by stating that although it was factually incorrect, it was not offensive in any way.

Some of us don't have a problem with him one bit. I like seeing this guy not just talk the talk but truly walking the walk and I wish a lot of my fellow Christians would do the same.

In fairness, I am a Lutheran, but my church has been mistaken for being of the dreaded "evangelical" variety a time or two. Then Westboro Baptist came and picketed us, good times.

Jesuits tend to be smart and cool. My grandparents; mom, and aunt drove all the way to NOLA before the Causeway made it easy so they could confess to Jesuits. (Mom turned Hippy before I came along, so I was not raised Catholic, though)

This is nothing new, or even confined to il Papa. My wife and I were sitting at the table a decade or so ago at a family reunion with a fundie cousin of mine while she denounced Catholics as idolterators for "praying to craven images" in their churches...all the while knowing my wife was raised Catholic.

There's some debate as to which St. Francis he ment. There's at least 3 St. Francisi (Francises?) that I know about. Assisi, Xavier and one more I'm blanking on. But, I'm sure that there are other St. Francisi (Francises)

Pope Francis is the biggest lib I've ever seen and I can't believe he got elected pope by lying and saying he loves Jesus when all he really loves is libtard ideals like "love thy neighbor" and vomit inducing lib lingo like "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven."

You know, the more I read about this guy, the more I think that there's actually hope for the Catholic church to straighten themselves out. Of course the next Pope could end up being the exact opposite of this guy and fark it all up, but at least one Pope is getting it right.

2013-12-17 11:11:22 PM
For once, I'm going to have to have to hop on the Fak bandwagon.  This pope seems like he's made from 100% juice and extra pope.  Many of his actions and words ring true with the very good core values of Christianity, not the bastardized and warped version that seems all too popular these days.  I hope this trend of setting good examples with humbleness, charity and acceptance continues.

But the images referred in the OT Ten Commandments were about Ba'al, so that would mean a golden calf, or say a large bull statue on Wall Street.

Pope Francis did have Francis of Assisi in mind, though. Not that Xavier (a Jesuit saint) wouldn't have made sense. Is that the debate? It would be kind of cool if the name had a double meaning. I can't see why he'd lie about it, anyway. What would be the point? (And anyway, everyone likes St. Francis of Assisi. You can't not. He was like a hippy saint.)

Oh, and there have been a lot of Saints by the name of Francis. Holy crap.

/Not Catholic, either, just good at Googling
