SilentStrider: Edmund Blackadder unavailable for comment?

This.

Rowan Atkinson is one of those rare comic actors who can perform both physical and verbal comedic acting with equal aplomb.

dittybopper: aplomb

In my mind, I watched Rowan Atkinson say this word in the same way he says "Baldrick".

Both have their strong points.  You can like The Three Stooges *AND* The Marx Brothers.

Wasn't Bean an advertising character?

FlashHarry: The sketch in question

"The government-approved regulator received 487 complaints from offended viewers after Atkinson claimed in his monologue that prayer "doesn't work" and compared pop group One Direction to Jesus' disciples...A rape scene in Downton Abbey lead to over 90 complaints for the episode, which saw Joanne Froggatt's character Anna Bates brutally attacked behind closed doors."

Rape is fine. Gentle ribbing of the Anglican Church? We won't stand for that.

That was pretty civil even by British comic standards, I must say. Just that one "Keep praying... it doesn't do anything..." bit, and seriously, that's hardly the bleeding edge of controversial humor. Still, good to see that the church isn't getting a pass at comedy charity events.

Nice try, Church of England, but I heard about you guys from Izzard and you really aren't that great.

Or something like that

Is in the garden one of those bits of British slang we don't get in America?

Invented by Enrico Falcone, the notorious 16th Century Florentine libertine and tile-maker.

FTA:  Celebrity Big Brother was fifth on the most complained-about list with 438 complaints. One memorable incident involved The Only Way Is Essex star Mario Falcone receiving an official warning for drunkenly appearing to slap underwear model Sophie Anderton in the garden.
Britain's Got Talent, Emmerdale, BBC News, Coronation Street and Downton Abbey completed the top ten.

Seriously?  Where's that scam rocket to Mars when I need it?

I have always liked English comedy more than American. Always loved The Young Ones and Bottom, Mr. Bean, etc. Got Amazon Prime and have found A Bit of Fry and Laurie; three episodes in, and I LOVE it.

If you like The Young Ones and Bottom, have a look for Filthy, Rich, and Catflap. It has Rik, Ade and Nigel Planer in a short series that was kind of a prototype for Bottom.

Also, look for "The Dangerous Brothers", a series of bits Rik & Adrian did for a sketch comedy show (on Channel Four, I think it was?).  Used to be available on VHS.  Features a special guest appearance by Fry & Laurie.

I go back to the Two Ronnies and the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. Truly, British comedy is the best.
