It's one of the little known "Seven States".  They teach about them in Harvard Law.

2013-12-16 06:07:54 PM
Louisana - yes.  South Carolina can blame it on that badly signed maze they call a road system.  Texas, of course.

I wonder if that ranking corresponds to the number of F150s and Silverados on the road...

Washington State has the worst drivers without question.

My theory is that the more Democrats in the area, the worse the drivers.

All the drivers in those states refuse to firmly grip the wheel or use seatbelts for fear of impeding a rapturin', resulting in ending up in the poor people's heaven.

One factor related to bad driving and four factors related to how aggressive police are.
From the real article:

There are five categories for each score, including:
Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
Failure to Obey (Traffic Signals + Seat Belts)
Drunk Driving
Tickets
Careless Driving

I don't know about the rest of the state, but in Seattle they can definitely blame that on the roads.  I've never seen anything like it.

You made the wrong choice of which fork to take when getting on the freeway?  Good luck getting back off, mofo, 'cause we decided to run a divider down the middle of the damned thing.

Want to get from one side of town to the other?  I hope you like driving through six neighborhoods to do so.

Oh, you're turning right?  Well, right before you get to the major intersection, we're gonna make the right lane "right turn only" onto this random side street.

All of them. People are farking stupid.

Roads don't make you drive slow in the left lane or cause you to suddenly turn right from the middle lane.  I hate driving around Seattle.  Closed the tunnel this weekend and I couldn't even get out of QA because of the clusterfark.    I thought the Bay Area had some dipstick drivers until I moved up here.

But the worst drivers anywhere?  Jacksonville, FL.

Spent most of the first 25 years of my life in California. People drive terrible here and it only got worst after "The Fast & Furious" movies came out.

Then I moved to the East Coast and spent a good 10 years traveling around the county, hitting 45 states total.

People in the Midwest and South are slow. East Coast are douchebags. West Coast are douchebags that still think TFAF is a thing.

But I have to say, Florida is the worst. More specifically, Miami.

Los Angeles is still a mess. But Miami is a god damn Mad Max situation.

It's more about illegals. They never learned to drive worth a damn, and if they get in trouble they can just walk away.

I see Missouri took a well-deserved spot on the list.

In Texas if you slowed down just enough the driver behind you would likely push you. Ya know, southern hospitality an all.

My 85 y.o. dad, who has driven in nearly all of the states, has always maintained that Illinois has the worst drivers.   EVERYBODY I have mentioned this to who has had similar experience driving in many states, has agreed.  This includes six friends (not related to each other) from Illinois!

2013-12-16 07:15:22 PM

wildcardjack: It's more about illegals. They never learned to drive worth a damn, and if they get in trouble they can just walk away.

Actually, if the cops sniff about they are one step away from being deported.  I would in fact think being illegal would make one a more cautious driver.

But other than that, what the hell does immigration status have to do with it?  Is a Mexican in the country legally more likely to have more advanced driving skills than an illegal Mexican?  This makes no sense.

My theory is the maximum douchebag rule.  People feel their driving is ok, provided that it's not as bad as the biggest douchebag they've encountered on the road.  So that means that driving generally degrades to that level.  Drivers from other jurisdictions adjust their driving to accommodate local road culture.  In other words, they learned it from you.

Colorado.

2013-12-16 07:15:57 PM
Massachusetts, Massachusetts, Massachusetts. I thought the state was in the top ten of the highest average insurance rates. I think the reason why MA drivers suck is because they have no patience. Always rushing around so they cut corners. People say pedestrians here are idiots, but I think that's because in general drivers here don't care about them.

I have a legitimate theory on this.  It's composed of two parts

1)  Most of the people in the Seattle area are from out of state meaning they don't know how to deal with the weather
2)  All the Asian drivers.  They are a. stereotypes for a reason and b. I have experienced it firsthand in i. Little China - Richardson, TX and ii. Seattle.

Huh?

"
Methodology
The rankings are based on statistics pulled from several sources, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association, and Mothers Against Drink Driving.
There are five categories for each score, including:

Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
Failure to Obey (Traffic Signals + Seat Belts)
Drunk Driving
Tickets
Careless Driving
"

Definitely not exactly science but it's a bit better than a ticket count.

Virginia near Washington DC are the worst drivers I have ever seen in my life by far. Traveling from NJ to SC and there was no accidents besides 3 in Virginia by the DC area. Everyone is ultra aggressive near there so it's no surprise there is that many accidents/

Having been a semi truck driver in every state, the hardest to deal with were Texas, Loiusianna, southern Miss, southern Ala, and southern Georgia. That strip across the south is the only area where people would intentionally challenge a semi. Everywhere else was either accommodating  or a little afraid of semis, but not those MF'ers.

I recently drove through 14 states and the hands down worst drivers I encountered were big rig drivers on the interstate which runs through the middle of Nebraska.  They drive in the fast lane, change lanes without signaling and if you have the audacity to try to pass you they will pick up speed so they can get to the next Podunk town first.  My first clue should have come when I saw one of their stickers on the rear of the trailer -- "How's My Driving?  Bad, Well fark You."

I've seen the sark, it is a hairy, sharp-toothed beastie.

I worded my question poorly, though, I perhaps should have asked, "aren't every one of the states on the list a red state?"

At least they drive in the slow lane in other states. Do you know how many Subarus going 50mph there are around here?

I haven't been to the Midwest but the driving is better everywhere else I've been in the US.

That's not the only reason. In cities, the majority of accidents are rear-end collisions caused by a myriad of reasons. In rural areas, it's more single car accidents caused by a combination of speeding, alcohol/drugs, reckless driving, etc.  And frankly, if there's even a hint of precipitation on the roads, we just flail around like we're caught in the worlds biggest bumper car ride.

In short, we bring it on ourselves. *sigh*

Hey, why isn't Georgia on that list? They're pretty bad drivers, too!
