It's still real food production to me!

2013-12-16 02:12:35 PM
Uh, okay. We can do that, actually. And we can do it closer to where the food needs to be, in urban centers. So, no problem?

Goddamnit, now Gagne's trying to take over food, too?

No matter how much time has passed, when I see WWF I still think of pro wrestling. It'll never be WWE to me.

Oh yeah, well, PRESIDENT Jack Tunney says that we cannot double food production by the year 2050, because food production is too physically exhausting, and furthermore, new food producers will be crowned at the Royal Rumble.

It'll happen, and it will involve GMOs, as well as much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Zimbabwe could also stop messing up their farms. Ethiopia could stop warring with itself and restart their agriculture. As could/should many areas around the world. We could also stop destroying crops because they aren't pretty enough or because prices aren't high enough (this is usually compensated by one government program or another). We could stop building on prime farming grounds and build cities and industry in less fertile areas.

But yeah, you are probably right. We'll get GMOs and we'll learn to be happy with them. Right until we learn that more can go wrong than never needing a brazilian waxes again.

So other than the business practices of Monsanto and such, what do you have against GMO? And what source do you have to back up your claim?

Other than the business practices? Nothing in general, really. It is just that we need to keep an eye out for fark ups with DNA sequences that produce negative effects.Like the satire I wanted to copy pasta for to see who would fall for it, but obviously did not copy. link. And the fact that GM food isn't actually necessary.

/Now with double check goodness.
//We could "easily" double the amount of available food without GM food
///We'd just need peace on Earth and good will amongst mankind

In Tomorrow's Table, they estimate 50% of yield is lost to pests, disease, and environmental conditions.

The author also just release a non-GMO rice that is more flood and drought resistant that was developed first through direct genome manipulation to identify the genes, then bred using precision breeding techniques from the cultivars identified.

I really dispute that we could double it without GMO tech

I highly, highly doubt we could double food production without GMO. Not all land is created equal for growing crops, and in most of Africa, the land isn't as fertile as we would hope.

We also need to go vertical not horizontal with our cities. Ramp up urban density and depopulate the rural areas.

On what grounds does he claim we need to double food production in that time? The population isn't going to double that quickly. It might never double again.

/GMOs are fine in theory, and future generations will laugh at our kneejerk fear of them
//patent issues and the business practices of Monsanto et al. are legitimate concerns

GMOs probably won't poison us, but the real danger is that they will certainly degrade the genetics of land race varieties.  That's an insane risk to take for the sake of Roundup ready corn and soy.

But we're stupid.

Veridian Dynamics. We're the future of food, developing the next generation of food and food-like products. Tomatoes... the size of this baby, lemon-flavored fish, chickens that lay 16 eggs a day, which is a lot for a chicken, organic vegetables chock-full of antidepressants. At Veridian Dynamics, we can even make radishes so spicy that people can't eat them, but we're not, because people can't eat them.

Veridian Dynamics. Food. Yum.

I'm sure there was an article on here a few months ago stating that we waste worldwide around half of all food produced.

/so fix that and no problem?
