That's because Rush sucks.

2013-12-16 11:11:25 AM
There a few tracks I was surprised to not see on there, but overall a pretty solid list.

2013-12-16 11:11:58 AM
Somebody likes Vampire Weekend.

I have no farking idea who 90% of those people are.

Goddamn farkin hipsters.

2013-12-16 11:15:17 AM
I'm just psyched to see Autre Ne Veut's Play by Play make the top ten, it's probably my favorite track of the year.

No Van Halen either. What's this world coming to?

2013-12-16 11:24:37 AM
Top tracks by gross sales? Number of plays on those AMI jukeboxes? View count of youtube videos? Author's personal preference?

2013-12-16 11:28:06 AM
The only band name I recognized on the list was Daft Punk.

2013-12-16 11:29:24 AM
...And I just saw David Bowie down toward the bottom. So only two names I recognized...

2013-12-16 11:30:21 AM
I'll play...some of my favorite songs of 2013

Ghumba Zumba - Billy Martin's Wicked Knee
The Hipster - Black Joe Lewis
Part of Me - Tedeschi Trucks Band
Halls of Columbia - Pickwick
Somewhere - Jimi Hendrix (yeah it's cheating *sunglasses fall from the sky*)
Pike 12 Song 3 - Buckethead (he has about 100 songs from 2013 that I love, he released 30 pikes this year)
Stranger - The Devil Makes Three
Dear Brother - Puscifer
Can't Fool Me - Bad Rabbits
Ratchet - Bloc Party
Shout it Out - Mikal Cronin
Avalanche - ASG
Can't Go Back - Joe Satriani
Atlas Novus - Scale the Summit (the Migration album is awesome)
Shut off the Lights - Collapse Under the Empire

Welcome to being old.  I'd say it is comfy but something just has to be f*cking with my back.  "New Slaves" is a killer track.

That being said, I'm disappointed that "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons didn't make the list, say instead of one of the many Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, or whomever songs.

2013-12-16 11:31:50 AM
haha, kanye at number 2? that list is instant bullshiat.

2013-12-16 11:32:23 AM
Good. If I wanted noodling, I'd make myself a bowl of Ramen.

Good god, I'm not. Not a fan at all.

Professor Wormbog: haha, kanye at number 2? that list is instant bullshiat.

Kanye West's ego aside, 'New Slaves' is an absolutely killer track.

2013-12-16 11:39:52 AM
youth lagoon - mute.  happy to see it there.  Dropla is also fantastic.  Goldtone and waking on a sunny day are fantastic.  pink rabbits is subtlety good.

volcano choir - comrade
national - graceless
john murry - southern sky

If you love songs about the New York Times and Saabs and Kennedy's, you'll love the vampire weekend tracks on this list.

2013-12-16 11:40:44 AM
that's a great list of 95 songs I wouldn't willingly listen to.

PolloDiablo: Professor Wormbog: haha, kanye at number 2? that list is instant bullshiat.

no, it's not. kanye is like what white people think hip hop is. but it's not hip hop. it's just pop music. the beat is better than the rhyming, and that isn't saying much.

2013-12-16 11:43:29 AM
Meh, I'll take The Livingston Stapler Company's playlist over most of that........

2013-12-16 11:45:09 AM
Here's my 2013 playlist from Spotify:

/Not everything there came out in 2013, but that's when I started listening

Incorrigible Astronaut: PolloDiablo: Arcade Fire - "Reflektor"

Stopped reading there. I'm a fan, but the new album blows.

the second half of the song with the piano is incredible.  But afterlife was my favorite track from the album.

2013-12-16 11:47:58 AM
I saw "the Knife" on that list and hoped this guy got some recognition finally:

But he didn't.  F*cking Swedes.

It really isn't great.

And I love Arcade Fire.

Professor Wormbog: anye is like what white people think hip hop is. but it's not hip hop. it's just pop music.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with pop music, especially good original pop music.

That said, Yeezus is easily the least "poppy" and accessible album Kanye has made, and the fact that it doesn't meet your arbitrary definition of hip-hop isn't really a commentary on the quality of the track.

2013-12-16 11:49:48 AM
I haven't heard quite a few of those and didn't like most of the ones that I have....which only goes to show that most of you have shiat taste in music.

Agreed.  It's not a terrible album, but it's by far their weakest.

I still have trouble getting past the name sometimes, but this album was real good.

pretty good. Ideally you would say one of the band's is a pale imitation of a better band you love. And the fact some one likes that imitation band makes you sick.

And that another band you love did that sound better 30 years ago than what this now popular band just did this year.

YOU CAN'T SING "F*CK YOU AND YOUR CORPORATION" WHEN YOUR MUSIC IS PRODUCED BY UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP.

2013-12-16 12:00:33 PM
Well I feel old.  I only recognized about 60% of the bands.

I have never had any appreciation for Hip Hop , it just dosnt appeal to me.  I need some form of Rock music.

That said, I did not care for the new Arcade Fire nearly as much as there previous records, thought the Vampire Weekend record was quite good.

/I like rush

Meh, that is the same whiny argument that has been around 50 years.  Its like when punks thought Joe Strummer of the Clash wasn't one of them because he went to a private school.

dude. it's hip hop. the lyrics are kind of the important part.

also, the music sucks. simple rhyme scheme, very little complexity. i don't have a vendetta against kanye, i'm just amazed that people think his music is good. like, at all.

Yea, I like hip hop, and I think Kanye blows dicks.  Like musically, not literally.  Maybe literally too though.

blowing dicks is a good thing, I would think. ?

I agree though, I can't believe people think this new Kanye album is good. And Drake? F*ck me.

But I realize I am about 18 years passed their demo so my opinion is pointless...

Maybe because all Rush did this year was a LIVE album, therefore there would be no new tracks on it? If this was a list from 2012, then I'd expect at least one.

There's no hate on Fark greater than RUSH hate outside the Politics tab. What did they ever do to you?

After looking at the list, and the other garbage on Pitchfark's website this sounds like good news for Rush!

Neil: "Hey Geddy did you hear? We didn't make Pitchfark's list of Kanye and obscure indie shiat!"
Geddy: "Oh thank God."

Just roll with it, DZ. It's like the Grateful Dead. Some people get Rush, most don't. They're incredibly polarizing, which, IMO, is the mark of a good artist. Love them or hate them, at least they won't bore the shiat outta you like most of the here today, gone tomorrow acts the RIAA pumps and dumps on the unsuspecting public.

2013-12-16 01:47:30 PM
only one of those I really listened to was Deafheaven which is kind of a less harsh atmospheric black metal band. It's alright but not as good as some of the other metal that came out this year imo

2013-12-16 02:49:41 PM
I've heard of 25 of those. Pitchfork better be careful, they're in danger of losing their hipster cred.

2013-12-16 02:54:00 PM
Gawd, even band NAMES suck these days.

2013-12-16 03:03:44 PM
Jesus, but that piece of shiat Kanye West song is on there? he one with the just-as-much-of-a-piece-of-shiat video?Wow.

2013-12-16 03:08:12 PM
Janelle Monáe

OK, saw this girl on SNL, and I couldn't help but like her... Daft Punk? Sure, they had a hit and it was catchy. After David Bowie, I don't think there's anything on that list I care about. And yeah, about 90 bands I've never heard of.

I thought "The Raven that Refused to Sing" by Steven Wilson was a beautiful song that somebody, somewhere might put on some silly, arbitrary best songs of 2013 list.

So far, I've been wrong.

Is 44 too young to not have even knowingly heard of a single song on the list?  I've heard of some of the groups/singers, but not a single one of the songs.  It's not like I listen to country or anything ridiculous like that.

Not really. I'm the same age but I keep my ears open for new music that appeals to me and like I said above, I'm only familiar with 25 of those entries (and have actually heard a dozen or so of the tracks).

Any list that tries to convince me that Daft Punk is music is invalid on its face.

Besides, Rush hasn't put anything new out this year, unless you count the live album/dvd from the Clockwork Angels tour.

Now Alice in Chains on the other hand? The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is an excellent album

Now Alice in Chains on the other hand? The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is an excellent album

I'm glad they ranked Deafheaven's "Dream House" so high. That song (and the whole album) is unlike any other extreme metal I've ever heard, in a very good way. It utterly defies mainstream aesthetics yet beautifully cuts to an emotional, vulnerable marrow. It's like if black metal got real and dropped the corpse paint.

For f*cks sake guys, I thought it was pretty obvious the Rush thing was a joke.

Recognized a few names, but none of the songs

Don't recognize a damn one of those songs.  Of the artists on that list I have heard of Daft Punk, David Bowie, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey.

God, I'm not even eligible for AARP yet.

Professor Wormbog: PolloDiablo: Professor Wormbog: anye is like what white people think hip hop is. but it's not hip hop. it's just pop music.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with pop music, especially good original pop music.

That said, Yeezus is easily the least "poppy" and accessible album Kanye has made, and the fact that it doesn't meet your arbitrary definition of hip-hop isn't really a commentary on the quality of the track.

YOU CAN'T SING "F*CK YOU AND YOUR CORPORATION" WHEN YOUR MUSIC IS PRODUCED BY UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP.

Yeah add rage against the machine to that as well.
