Treygreen13: This site is my homepage. Every day I get to work I load this site up and read the Sports tab. I don't go anywhere else for my sports because I used to feel like everyone was part of a big group of fans that all gathered around and had fun.

Used to.

Lately, the click-whoring has reached unbearable levels. It's bad enough that ESPN tries to cram their version of events down our throats, but now Fark feels the need to repeatedly green the same topics just to see us complain about them. They'll attach random player tags of regular users to unrelated stories to get them to come to the threads. I've paid $5 per month for a while now just to post trivia that I write just for this site in the Power Rankings thread every week and now I don't even know when they'll be up - it could come at any time between 11am and 4pm depending on whatever idiot modmin is working that day.

But that's not the worst thing. The worst thing is that this is no longer a tab where a community talks about the greenlit content. It's one where the content is greenlit to antagonize specific members of the community. Where content is put up regardless of quality (looking at you, PFM) just to make us type more letters and drive the hits up. When is the last time you can honestly say you came here and actually learned something through the greenlights instead of just serving as an opportunity to biatch at each other? I know it's been a while for me. I follow the NFL, watch NFL Network, ESPN, and read Fark every day of the week and for all our biatching and moaning about ESPN being unwilling to just let a topic go we're worse by far. We talked about Tebow just as much as they did. We biatched about the Patriots just as much as they did. We must have had 20 Redskins name greenlights this year in spite of the fact that they're NOT changing the name, we're going to have 30 Redskins RG3 Greenlights by the end of the season, and in every thread we're going to say exactly the same thing (OMG DAN SNYDER) and ...

On one hand, I agree with you -- I hate the cowboys and I relish every time they lose, and I like ribbing their fans for a good fun, but this crossed a line.

On the other hand, at times this just sounds as complaints for picking on the cowboys when they're down, something that has been going on for several seasons -- and less about a tasteless headline that calls out a beloved Farker.

It is a bit trolltastic.  It's just not fair ... not fair that her poor widdle baby Romo done gone and done a dumbass thing.  Not to worry, by this time next year, the Cowgirls will have a new head coach and assistant coaches to blame everything on so Romo doesn't have to look so pathetic.

I appreciate a good Cowboys rib-kicking as long as the headline is clever and there's something to discuss or read in the story. I've been here since 2007 so I've seen PLENTY of it, so it's not like I just woke up with a sandy vagina today and couldn't handle it anymore.  But there's nothing "Farkish" about either of these Cowboys greenlights - on a week where we get to see the best of the best Fark headlines of the year I'm reminded how good this site can be at its best and then I see this greenlight and remember just how terrible a site can be if the content doesn't match the spirit of the website.

Use the ignore button Trey or the Dark Side wins. Just ignore about 30 people. If they start saying interesting things theyll get quoted and you unignore them. Its not as if the chaff makes the wheat tastier. There is still interesting and topical content without all the white noise. And you never even notice the missing content. I learned this in NASCAR threads which at one point were roughly 50/50 fun (or even piss me off content) and "herp-a-derp Southern Hillbillies are dum, racing in circles wiff skittles colors is dum herp a derp why you not moar smrtr like formula one" content. I just went hog wild with ignore and saw almost none of them again. And the threads became fun social experiences instead of drudges through quagmires of stupid. A few made it back off my ignore list with interesting comments. Not many though. Most full on trolls just are not ever interesting just irritating.

I guess what Im saying is try it. You might get your community feel back if you do and theres not much risk.

Just locked in Dallas -2.5 next week.

If a loss like this does eat at them all week and bring out their best next Sunday, well then blow up the team and start over.

I think this is part of what Jerry Jones had in mind with his marketing of the Cowboys Brand. Love 'em or Love to Hate 'em, you are talking about the Cowboys. I'm sorry but deal with that.

It's not Fark's fault that more people hate the Cowboys and would rather talk negatively about them, specially after a loss like yesterday -- and as such, getting a headline like that is not surprising -- the first one that is. This one? Not so much, this one is personal and as such I repudiate such headline.

You don't want to deal with negative headlines? Choose a less polarizing team -- I don't see giants, jags, viqueens, et al fans crying about how they get mocked in the headlines.

I will talk Football all you want, but there are certain things that come with the territory with being a Cowboys fan.

I also see the bad headlines about the Broncos whenever they lose -- I try to laugh 'em off or analyze them and such -- but I never take them so seriously as to blow a gasket over them.

Your disgust and disgruntlement at my comment in this thread is duly noted.  I also point to the fact that, in my later response, I lauded the object of your White Knighting as being a tough and informed person.  So, I'm wondering where all the hatred and bitterness comes from?

snowshovel: As much as I love to see a Dallas beatdown (mostly from the way the media gives them the royalty treatment with premiere games no matter how bad they are), I just don't get the play-calling. All Romo aside...

You're up 26-3. You know you have a crummy defense, bad to almost historic levels. Your running back is posting an obscenely high ypr against your opponent. How does any coach put that data together and say, "Hey, you know what? I want my defense on the field as much as possible! My running back really could use some rest. Now's the perfect chance to start slinging the ball all over the field!"

this.  no dog on the hunt other than my respect for DiAtribe, but that second half play-calling might be the worst i've ever seen.

INeedAName: I agree that calling someone out is pretty bad, it happened the other day as well. And of course the Mandela green was terrible...

The Mandela green was horrible.  Even worse that they didn't pull the green after everyone expressed how terrible a headline it was.  They've pulled better headlines for less reasons.  They specifically left up the bad headline as click bait even after the better headline was up on the Main Page.

That being said, I haven't spent any money on the site.  My one month of Total Fark was donated by Rwa2play (thanks again in case you didn't see it the first time), so I'm probably not taking it as hard as some of the people who actively support the site through Total Fark.

And without their 2nd stringer RB.

And while using their 4th or 5th QB this year, the immortal Matt Cassel.

And how said division favorite decided to let the best back in the NFL carry the ball a grand total of *EIGHT* times.

Oh it's a garunteed Vikings win if the lions are still possibly able to make the playoffs.

I mean, the Vikings need to lose to better their draft standing and the Lions need to win to have a chance to get into the playoffs. That's a combo platter of the 2 teams screwing themselves over. They may literally start the wrecking process of the dome midway 3rd quarter.

Actually, I don't "pick" my team. I was born and raised a Cowboys fan. I put my allowance into the football pot in the 1994 Super Bowl when I was 10 years old. I've lived within walking distance to the stadium for nearly a decade and I even go to the draft and practices. I'm not about to dump my favorite team because the average mouth-breathing football moron doesn't like them because they feel like it.

It does bother me, though. There is so much more we could be discussing.

The Redskins dropped another game after going for 2 for the win on the 2 yard line.
The Browns scored 31 and nearly beat the bears.
The Texans are the biggest dumpster fire of a division favorite in the history of dumpster fires.
The Patriots lost to the Dolphins when Brady threw a pick in the endzone as time expired.
The Vikings mauled the Eagles with backups of backups.
The Seahawks shut out the Giants and Manning the Lesser threw 5 picks.
The 49ers have won 4 in a row and look to be an actual playoff contender finally.
The Panthers have tied the Saints for the NFC south division when the Saints dropped one to the Rams and the Panthers have won 9 of their last 10.
The Cardinals and Titans played an overtime thriller resulting in the Cardinals going to the top of the list for teams on the outside looking in.

And we're not discussing any of it. It's two Cowboys threads, one about Jamaal Charles, and the weekly anti-Steelers thread.

bleh.  yesterday was pretty epic by NFL standards, but, have you noticed how Sports Tab is largely....not irrelevant, but.....they don't pay a whole lot of attention to it.  they greenlight stories days after they happen or sometimes not at all.  yes, as ntoed above, "fark has changed", but week in week out there are bona fide NFL stories that don't get posted.  don't worry about it so much.

they seem to lately love more soccer and NASCAR stories.  there's a bevy of NFL storeis today, but that's to be expected on a monday.

and, listen to any sports talk radio show today.  the hottest topic is Romo's "choker" label.  just because on this site, "she" has defended him doesn't mean this is not pageworthy.  go to foxsports, espn, and cnnsi:  the cowboys, be it dez leaving or the game in general, is one of the first 2-4 stories on the homepage.

That doesn't mean we have to be like that, though. As Di's fan graph shows, we have lurkers and posters from all the teams. I see the submissions through TF, I know people are submitting stories about other teams. They just don't get greenlit because talking about the Panthers doesn't devolve into a 200 post shiatstorm like the ones they greenlight over and over and over.

I must admit I'm highly amused by Shanahan trying to get fired.

And that Cassel putting on that performance should seal Frazier's fate as he was the biggest Ponder proponent and kept Cassel on the bench as long as possible.  Put the game on his shoulders and he carried it, when we're used to trying to have AP do it. Was a great win. Defense tried to let them back in but Cassel never quit and kept the offense scoring.and moving.  And a nice debut for Asiata as well.

I don't even care if it's about Di Atribe. I care that we got two threads to argue about the exact same argument we have every week and are completely ignoring the rest of the NFL because the modmins want clicks.

mikaloyd: Treygreen13: And we're not discussing any of it. It's two Cowboys threads, one about Jamaal Charles, and the weekly anti-Steelers thread.
There is one about the Giants/Seahawks game. And 2 about the Flyers collapse to the Capitals.

The Giants/Seahawks thing died immediately because it was about the store and contest, not about Eli's once-in-a-lifetime-terrible season and Seahawks defense absolutely shredding them.

Welcome to Fark. Home of no NBA threads unless it's one to hate on the Lakers (and they are so pedestrian this year even THOSE threads are dried up).

Have you see our Beiber is lesbian Entertainment tab?

ariseatex: I thought calling out specific Farkers in headlines, whether direct or indirect, was forbidden.

I was ignorant of this.  I thought it was cool as long as you didn't put their username in the headline.  But I do see this has ruffled a few feathers so I will keep this in mind in the future.

I've seen all the tabs. I don't even acknowledge the Politics tab (been there, got trolled by that) and I once got a greenlight on my submission mocking the Entertainment Tab for greenlighting anything about Britney Spears back during her meltdown and got Fark a hundred more clicks on the topic. Both those tabs could disappear and I'd shed no tears.

I bet you submitted that polar opposite Nelson Mandela headline too didnt you?

I just gave you another foothold. Go in there and throw down some mad stats against Eli.

Oh god the entertainment tab. Every band is awful unless you like a select very few classic rock bands apparently

Treygreen13: They just don't get greenlit because talking about the Panthers doesn't devolve into a 200 post shiatstorm like the ones they greenlight over and over and over.

well, that's the other side of the coin of being America's Team.  Higher profile targets get more action.  Lower profile targets tend to get ignored. when's the last time you saw the Cardinals on Monday Night Football?

elguerodiablo: I submitted this completely as a nod and a wink

yeah, i figured as much.  only someone who was faily intimate (wrong wrod, sorry) with the Who's Who of the NFL threads would get it.  but i don't tink it was malicious.

for a while Entermainment was Arrested Development tab.

Any worthwhile real-time threads are for those in the Eastern time zone. Hardly any point in entering a live-as-it-happens thread talking about a show that wont be broadcast until hours later here. Hell I will even watch a football stream that is slightly choppy and real time over one that is perfect visually but 2 minutes slow while following FARK football threads.

Heh. Well the headline itself isn't offensive to me. Like I said in my earlier posting, the article does sound like something I would say. But stuff like this can have some unintended consequences. I know you didn't mean it bad, Satan Cat.

Oh I see. Yes. Very much this. And everything else you said. I HATE using the ignore function, but I may have to start. This is supposed to be a fun & smart place to discuss sports with others who understand sports.

Khellendros: bacongood: Khellendros:

Baseball does it all the time, calculating plate appearances, probability of situational scoring, and chance of winning.  The models are amazingly accurate.

Baseball's are way better, just purely based on the number of historical MLB games played compared to NFL games played.

Plus, baseball tends to that type of statistical analysis better.

Absolutely.  Larger sample set gives you better outputs. However, since these models got serious in the early 2000's for the NFL, the winning percentages have been accurate to within a few percentage points for nearly every situational state from halftime forward.  They get a little fuzzy when you try to apply them before that, and of course they get tighter as you push later in the game.

You're overlooking the fact that baseball players tend to maintain their level of play longer than do football players because there's far less physical contact. Past performance a predictor of future results? Really?? The running back and cornerback positions in particular would love to have a word with you, not to mention the variance by scheme, minor injuries, etc.

There may be some value to the statistics, but they are not, will not, and can never be as accurate between baseball and football.

Read the whole argument for vs against trying to apply money-ball to basketball.  Footballs a whole different level beyond that

You're comparing player perspective to a game perspective, which isn't correct at all.  Situationally, games in similar states don't "age".  They are what they are - score, yards, etc.  Yes, single players age, so that they decline . However, 50 historical games in the last 15 years that were 45 -10 at the half aren't any different than a current game at 45 - 3 at the half.  The same percentage chance to win will apply.  The historical performance of those games is the best predictor of how those games will play out in the current.

And those statistics have been played out and proven, year after year.  They are nearly as accurate (from a game perspective) as baseball.
