Khellendros: phaseolus: I admit I'm not a football guy, or a statisticals guy, and this is the first time I've looked at one of those probability-of-winning graphs so there's a good chance I don't know what I'm talking about. But, given that there's a hell of a lot of game still to be played at halftime, how could any formula that's worth a damn possibly give a 96 percent probability of any outcome at that point? Nate Silver's Presidential election forecasts had a lot of "time premium" baked into his numbers; it seems like this 'Advanced NFL Stats' place doesn't have much (if any) of that. What gives?

Lost Thought 00: The probabilities are just a fancy way of restating the margin of victory at any given point in time. They are useless bullshiat

They're not useless at all.  The best predictor of future success is historical performance.  If you look at all historical games of similar state at halftime, the chances of victory for the current game is very likely to be similar to the historical performance of similar games.  If 96% of games in a similar state to this (at halftime) ended up with a victory for the leading team, it's very reasonable to conclude a 96% chance of victory.  Now, one can quibble with what qualifies as a similar situation, such as whether it's just based on score, or if they include factors like home field advantage, weather conditions, total yards, time of possession, team record, etc, and whether those make a better statistical model.  But it's still a valid principle.

Baseball does it all the time, calculating plate appearances, probability of situational scoring, and chance of winning.  The models are amazingly accurate.

Basically. I mean, according to PFR, teams leading by 23 at halftime in the post-merger era were 38-1 before yesterday (the only other team to come back: the 1982 Packers). Maybe that's a small sample size, so we'll branch it out to 21 to 25 points. Of 312 games since 1990 with that margin, only 12 were lost. 300-12 is a 96.1% winning percentage. More recently, since 2010, teams were 59-3, (Peyton Can't Play in the Cold, Philip Rivers's Monday Night Jake, and DeSean Farking Jackson being the only losses) for a 95.2% winning percentage.

Also, a typo would be misspelling 1 letter accidentally.  You omitted a letter and reversed 2 others.  That sounds a bit like i-don't-know-how-the-word-is-spelled-ism to me.  Not that I care that much, I was just curious if that was a word I had never heard before, so I checked, and it wasn't.  If you had made a plain typo, I wouldn't have bothered to check.

If they were amazingly accurate they wouldn't swing wildly during the course of a game.

Incorrect.  You don't seem to understand how situational statistics work.  They if you look at any percentage at any point, any game in that state at that point will have the correct final % outcome.  If we monitor a hundred more games with the same halftime state as the Cowboys game, you would be close to 96% of them ending with a win for the leading team.  However, if you examine those same games with 5 minutes left, they have progressed to a different state.  96% will STILL end up winning, but they fall into different sub buckets, and you see which teams are more likely to be in the other 4%.  They are all correct at that moment, and the final state is correct for each of those games based on the pool in every states during the course of the game.

As a Giants fan, I'm totally okay with Eli stinking up the joint for the rest of the year. They're already out of playoff contention, so we're just looking at a better draft pick. If they're going to be awful, they might as well be comically awful. And if they're going to be comically awful, better that they do it when they've got nothing to win.

/Incidentally, this is where one of you points out that they traded away this year's draft pick

elite QB, huh?

bummed that Larry Fitz has been diagnosed with a concussion.  he got knocked pretty hard.  the moment he got clocked he dropped the ball.  didn't look good.  and there were a few shots of him on the sideline as the OT progressed, and he had "that" look, like he wasn't really processing information.  Didn't look good.

i thought the same thign Peter King did, re the the Titans playing for OT.  their season is already screwed, they're #2 QB has been playing since, what, the last month, it appears they're ready to cut ties with Locker, Munchak went into that game as one of the 3 coaches most likely to be fired on Black Monday.......he had a chance to go for two to win.  and he played it safe and played for OT.  Shoudla gone for it.  im glad he didn't of course, but.....nothing to lose, pardon the pun.  he's a dead man walking, the team is a dead man walking, give the fans something to root for.  he played in conservatively and still lost.

I really don't know what the fark Eli was doing. The Seahawks have 6'+ corners with excellent ball skills across the board, so, yeah dude, keep lofting those "50/50" balls that never work against Seattle.

As far as the Cowboys go....there was no reason for Dallas to not have at least 30 rushing attempts in that game. The fact that they're defense sucks should provide even MORE incentive to run some clock down. Combine that with the Packers sucking against the run themselves.

Instead...what, 18 carries all game? Ridiculous.

2013-12-16 11:44:45 AM
The problems were legion.  A good quarterback wouldn't have made the mistakes that Romo made that sealed the fate.  A good defense wouldn't have allowed a team to come back like GB did and good coaching wouldn't have had such shiatty play calling on a 2nd and 6 with around 2 minutes left.

So yes, Romo deserves some blame, maybe even a bigger portion of it since his actions resulted in setting the winning score.  But that doesn't excuse the rest of the team (including the coaching staff) by a damn sight.

yeah, and Carson Palmer had a high ankle sprain on a dirty play by TEN, which was flagged 15 for i think unsportmanslike.  palmer released the ball, and then the DE or whatever kinda blindsided him but low, like a  kill shot to the knee.  on replay it didn't look good and Palmer was obviously in pain.  we got i think 3 off the automatic first down and half the distance, but.....yeha.  that sucked.

it isn't official but there are the "team sources" reports out there, re Fitz.  so now, just a matter of, with two games left, how bad is the concussion and thus, does he play?  @SEA, home SFO.  huge games.  huuge.

Perhaps I was still drunk, but I swear I heard the dynamic duo fellating Jerry Jones in the first half as "Owner, GM, Defensive Coordinator" after all his recommended changes from last week.  I must have blacked out in the 2nd half because I don't remember hearing that retracted.

I'm a die hard trollhawks fan, so I don't care much for the Cowboys.  But it's amazing to me how many idiots there are that spew and spittle about how bad Romo is.

Romo gets flustered when he's put under pressure to perform.  And then makes mistakes.  Do you know why, mouth breathing lunatics?  Because Romo can only score so many points before his DEFENSE has to actually man up and play like they've been there before.

You can try to blame Romo all you want, but the fact of the matter is, there's at least, at LEAST, 3-4 games where if Dallas' defense was on par with say, the Panthers or even the Texans, the Cowboys would've destroyed their opponent and would be playing for a high NFC seed.

But hey, enjoy your offseason complaining about Romo.  I'm sure if you replace him with Kirk Cousins or McCown, he'll fix all of their problems and they'll go undefeated, right?

Oh wait, the defense just gave up 40 points again.  But yeah...the QB who's averaging 26 pts a game is *totally* the problem.  Good jorb.

Since you told me nothing at all about how you read it, I can't possibly answer that. That link shows 40 teams who had a 23-point lead at halftime, of whom 38 went on to win. Discounting yesterday's game, that means they were 38-1. If you're seeing something else, you need to clarify.

Bullshiat, the defense is one of the worst in the league in about every single stat category

They should never be in the situation for a single Romoception to cost them the game against these bad teams, but they are because the defense is a bunch of sub-par players.  When Romo starts throwing 5 picks a game like Manning the Lesser then you can start blaming him

2013-12-16 01:01:22 PM
Meanwhile, nobody talks about the heroics of Matt Flynn and the GB defense. And I'm very proud of our WRs. Just an astounding effort in the second half. Back up tightends (quarless, you're the farking man), Boykin looking like an experienced vet somehow, and Datone picking it up after jolly went out. Just an awesome contribution from players who normally aren't involved and/or learning the ropes.

Their efforts are completely overshadowed as if the win was just given to them. They deserve to be on the highlight reels.

It took several interceptions this time. At particularly bad times. Im not saying Romo is the cause of all Cowboys problems in all Cowboys losses. But when it IS primarily Romos fault a game is lost there is nothing to be gained by denying it. Yesterday Romo shat the bed. So did my favorite quarterback Drew Brees. So did McGloin. So did Eli. Theres no point in trying to call a turd on the sheets a rose when everybody can see and smell the turd. Wait for a game that isnt lost by dumb needless interceptions at heartbreaking times to get more traction.

2013-12-16 01:10:33 PM
This site is my homepage. Every day I get to work I load this site up and read the Sports tab. I don't go anywhere else for my sports because I used to feel like everyone was part of a big group of fans that all gathered around and had fun.

Used to.

Lately, the click-whoring has reached unbearable levels. It's bad enough that ESPN tries to cram their version of events down our throats, but now Fark feels the need to repeatedly green the same topics just to see us complain about them. They'll attach random player tags of regular users to unrelated stories to get them to come to the threads. I've paid $5 per month for a while now just to post trivia that I write just for this site in the Power Rankings thread every week and now I don't even know when they'll be up - it could come at any time between 11am and 4pm depending on whatever idiot modmin is working that day.

But that's not the worst thing. The worst thing is that this is no longer a tab where a community talks about the greenlit content. It's one where the content is greenlit to antagonize specific members of the community. Where content is put up regardless of quality (looking at you, PFM) just to make us type more letters and drive the hits up. When is the last time you can honestly say you came here and actually learned something through the greenlights instead of just serving as an opportunity to biatch at each other? I know it's been a while for me. I follow the NFL, watch NFL Network, ESPN, and read Fark every day of the week and for all our biatching and moaning about ESPN being unwilling to just let a topic go we're worse by far. We talked about Tebow just as much as they did. We biatched about the Patriots just as much as they did. We must have had 20 Redskins name greenlights this year in spite of the fact that they're NOT changing the name, we're going to have 30 Redskins RG3 Greenlights by the end of the season, and in every thread we're going to say exactly the same thing (OMG DAN SNYDER) and then pretend like we know anything other than exactly what we're fed every single farking day. It's the same for every Cowboys thread (OMG TONY ROMO) and it'll be the same for every 49ers/Seahawks thread and it'll be the exact same for every other thread in this tab because we're fed us the same crap over. and over. and over.

I guess the reason I'm so upset about this is because I genuinely like a lot of you.  Robsuland  mikaloydare two of my favorite farkers.  eddievercetti is a great guy (for an Eagles fan) and I love seeing people like  Bunny de Ville representing their team even if they're bad. Not to mention my Cowboys fan friends on this site, who I've met in person and even sent little gifts back and forth with. Even IAmRight (who I bitterly disagreed with for quite a while) always gave me a lot to think about and I felt like he had reasons for feeling the way he did even if I disagreed with him and thought he was wrong. You guys are the type of people that make this tab work. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of you, and I'm sorry if I don't list your name. I just want to get this all out. But some people on this site do nothing but antagonize others, contribute nothing, and turn every thread into a giant shiat-fest that makes me want to just close the window and actually do some work. Ugh.

Anyway, I was really disappointed in the tab today. Two threads on a Cowboys regular season loss, neither one of which were a clever headline - only playgrounds for us to fight with each other. Well, I'm not going to hop in that sandbox again today. If you want this to be what your website is about, then fine. You don't need my $5 to make a fan forum. Just know that some of us want to talk Football instead of yelling at each other.

What freaking game were you watching?   Romo threw the 1st interception @ 2:58 in the 4th quarter.  And even still the packers had to go 50 yards

That's not shiatting the bed, that dashing the last glimmer of hope that the defense had been trying all season to destroy

Used to...

TL;DR

This site is going downhill fast. All in the name of profit and clicks.

I agree that calling someone out is pretty bad, it happened the other day as well. And of course the Mandela green was terrible...

:::applause:::

THIS. So much this.

I'm tired of people on here being dicks just to be dicks. The football threads have been my favorite part of fark... hell, of the entire internet, even, for six or seven seasons now. I don't want people to leave because of dicks and trolls.

SO farkING WHAT if TonyRomo had a bad day. You don't need to harass someone in the headline. It was funny when it was done to me in good spirits. This was not funny.

So. To reiterate. GROW UP.

And to my Fark Football Friends... that ignore button exists for a reason. I hate to use it. You hate to use it. But I'd hate for you to give up on our threads, too.

Prey4reign: Rabid Badger Beaver Weasel: Who approved that headline? It's about as close to calling someone out in a headline as you can get without directly mentioning them by name. I think it crosses the line.

It is a bit trolltastic.  It's just not fair ... not fair that her poor widdle baby Romo done gone and done a dumbass thing.  Not to worry, by this time next year, the Cowgirls will have a new head coach and assistant coaches to blame everything on so Romo doesn't have to look so pathetic.

Get a life.
