Maybe people who are more anxious are more likely to spend more time online.

DNRTFA, but I can see how it would be true.  If you're using the internet as an escape from the real world, you'd probably have some anxiety associated with the issues you're avoiding.

Speaking of, I just signed up for total fark (like ten minutes ago). I thought it would be like Club 33 at Disneyland or Bilderberg or something, but from what I can see it's just a cool icon next to my name and the ability to read headlines that don't make it to the front page (and to vote on them).  Most of them suck-- it's like joining a band's fan club and getting access to early demos and b-sides.

I dunno-- maybe there's something more but I haven't found out yet. But I'm happy to be inboard. Had a ton of fun trolling, posting, and twerking here the past year and thought it was time to kick in.

I don't understand that, but I freely acknowledge that I'm avoiding the LOCAL real world. That's because it's full of rednecks (the willfully ignorant type, mind you), tea party conservatives, people who won't shut up about their snowflake kids, and technophobes who I can barely talk to on the best of days. Every cool person I've met here moved away with a year.

yes, it's fine, just make sure you don't have it plugged in. The key to keeping the DVD drive extra clean is to mix equal parts bleach and ammonia and apply that liberally to your electronics.

/please don't do this

You actually do need to take time to disconnect and decompress.

Though, this is just a new tweak on an old problem. Back in the 70s and 80s, they were talking about how folks needed to take non-working vacations -- meaning going somewhere and not contacting the office several times a day.

I don't think that when the technology for cellphones just exploded within such a short period of time, anyone had even considered the long term psychological effects. We should have gotten the hint when people had to be basically ordered to turn off and not use their cells in places where phones are not traditionally wanted, such as movie theaters, houses of worship, court trials, funerals and even while out hunting.

Some major department stores even have installed cell jammers to cut down on the cell phone use.

Cutting yourself off from stressors now and then is a good thing. Even if you're not paying attention to that TV in the background yammering out doom and gloom hours a day, your subconscious is. Not to mention a host of 'minor' irritations you get while surfing the Internet -- such as ads that pop up and obscure your entire screen while you try to figure out how to close them or those small ads that advertise the same product while using a misleading or inappropriate image. (I haven't figured out why a testosterone booster needs to show boiling potatoes, sliced beets or weeds.)

Redirectors chap my arse. I want to read about the drunk falling in a dumpster and not especially that page offering hot 'n ready women or that new car out.

Minor irritations, but they add up over time.

It still annoys me to have to hastily avoid some oblivious driver, talking on a cell while trying to navigate a crowded parking lot and it also annoys me when my cell goes off when I'm fighting my way through traffic. (I let it go to voice mail.)

Find a quiet place in a park and read a book. Enjoy the day and the breeze. Go fishing, hiking or just walking with your cell off. Heck, even sit in a mall and people watch, and enjoy everyone else melting down with a cell glued to their ear. Actually see and admire the way the mall was made to please the eye.

At times, you gotta decompress and disconnect.
