Another so-called "study".

2013-12-15 08:18:24 PM
Maybe people who are more anxious are more likely to spend more time online.

2013-12-15 08:44:29 PM
DNRTFA, but I can see how it would be true.  If you're using the internet as an escape from the real world, you'd probably have some anxiety associated with the issues you're avoiding.

I anxiously used to sit on my porch awaiting the newspaper, but that wasn't nearly as much fun.

A new Kent State University study says college students who spend hours each day online, texting or talking on cellphones are more anxious, less happy and get lower grades.

In other news, cheap shots fired at Kent State.

Speaking of, I just signed up for total fark (like ten minutes ago). I thought it would be like Club 33 at Disneyland or Bilderberg or something, but from what I can see it's just a cool icon next to my name and the ability to read headlines that don't make it to the front page (and to vote on them).  Most of them suck-- it's like joining a band's fan club and getting access to early demos and b-sides.

I dunno-- maybe there's something more but I haven't found out yet. But I'm happy to be inboard. Had a ton of fun trolling, posting, and twerking here the past year and thought it was time to kick in.

It's basically just a special little badge that says you ride on the short bus. Though I wouldnt worry about it; I'm sure someone like you would fit right in at TF.

I always wondered if the votes actually meant anything.

There are also TF discussion threads, access to the Photoshop contests a few days in advance, and lack of that nagging message at the top of the page if you have ads blocked.

it comforts me to know that I'm giving back to you little people. I know I'm already subsidizing your healthcare, education, and welfare benefits via my insanely high federal taxes, but I like to give.  I know I shouldn't, but what can I say?  I love people.

I don't understand that, but I freely acknowledge that I'm avoiding the LOCAL real world. That's because it's full of rednecks (the willfully ignorant type, mind you), tea party conservatives, people who won't shut up about their snowflake kids, and technophobes who I can barely talk to on the best of days. Every cool person I've met here moved away with a year.

So I talk to you guys, as well as my gamer friends who are unfortunately scattered across the nation... and it helps keep me sane. Sometimes I go hiking, too.

YMMV.

2013-12-15 11:44:21 PM
Too much time in the online world doesn't really leave me stressed out, but it can still have a disorienting, burnout type of effect. Now if only I could find a more concise, clever way of putting it...
