What a terrible story. I'm never helping anyone again.

Why does every local news site think that just because I'm using an iphone, I must want to share my location information with them?

New wife better hope he made her his beneficiary on his life insurance policy or it's going to take time and a lawyer to get her the money.

The motorist was killed also, but that's not important

Yet another good reason to get a limo. Limo drivers don't stop for anyone.

Why have the laws not only do the criminal ignore them but our government refuses to enforce them.

Also, don't go crossing a busy street at midnight while wearing a black tuxedo. His bride's giant white wedding dress would have made a much better warning reflector.

You know- if you're going to go out, passing away while doing a good deed isn't the worst way to go..

Ah, 44 years old, attractive, and a teacher. So along with the vet's wife, a 14 year old boy is also mourning the loss of a lover today.

The two were standing by the side of the road when they were struck first by a vehicle headed east on 109th, and hit twice more by two vehicles trailing the first, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office.

Good grief.

lenfromak: Who the hell drives home from his own wedding reception?

After reading many wedding threads I'm guessing a lot of people on Fark do. Any bridezilla thread here is usually met with several posts in the vein of: 'me and my hubby actually paid $50 for our wedding, it was held in mom's backyard, our friend officiated, the bartender was our kitty cat Mr. Softy McFur, the ring was imaginary and the wedding dress was a watermelon theme tablecloth.'

2013-12-15 10:01:49 PM
So.... nobody is wondering how they got hit? Her car went off the road, he pulled off the road to help her up the ravine, and they both get run over? Were they in the road? Did the car that hit them go flying down the ravine after them?

/excellent reporting

Of course, what they classically omit is:
"And then I woke up, turned over to say hi to the cat, then masturbated furiously to imported japanese porn.."

//both genders..

It's okay. The driver was suffering from affluenza.

2013-12-15 10:09:58 PM
This is sad, but they were in the street when they were hit.  Even if they're not at fault, per se, usually pedestrians who get hit in a street are doing something stupid or careless, like crossing without being sure the driver of an approaching car could see them.  In this case it looks like they might not have given sufficient margin for icy roads.

Yeah, I was wondering that myself. I've been stranded on the highway before and step one is to pay attention and get way the hell away from the road. If I had to guess I'd say they were hit when they went to enter his car? That's where the would have gone, right?

Don't be a good samaritan near your wedding, and avoid work the week before your retirement if at all possible. Any other tropes?

itsaidwhat: Return the wedding gifts?

If Seinfeld had stayed on the air they would've reached that episode eventually.

George: He's dead? He's dead! So we get the gifts back!
Elaine: We can't ask for the gifts back, are you crazy?
George: Why not? It's a simple case of return to sender!
Elaine: But how are we gonna ask? Who's gonna ask?
Kramer: I'll ask!
Jerry: YOU'LL ask?
Kramer: I've got an invite to the funeral, yes! I'll ask his widow at the funeral.
Jerry: Oh yeah...I like this idea.

A few weeks back a woman plowed head-on into the end of a guardrail right next to me on the highway. I pulled over and ran up, got her back in her vehicle while she seized, made sure it was shut off, checked for other passengers/fires, etc. etc. Well, I really didn't want to be there and sure enough we were almost run into by motorists farking around and gawking/not farking driving properly. Helping can be a huge farking hazard.

/pointless story, bro.

So everyone within a 100 mile radius gets to tap this until she falls for some brooding weirdo? Sounds like a deal.

Headline would have carried the same weight if it simply said "Man" or "Person" instead of "Army veteran". The most weight would have come with "Groom".

Sounded like icy conditions... that many cars going off the road in that one spot.

I'm going to guess that they were indeed in the road.

Have to include a more general "dealing with the public" to that "Don't work on your day off."

Yeah, it's a lack of enforcement that's the issue. That's why so many people are in prison. It's because we don't enforce laws.

Exactly! We just hand them the keys to the prisons. The only reason they stay is for the cot and 3 hots, well and the free medical care.
I got nothing....

My friend Tom was killed about 15 years ago in Texas.  He had just graduated from college with a software engineering degree and was driving with his new bride to California to work at a startup.  They had a flat tire on I-20 somewhere west of Dallas after dark, I assume on the driver's side.  He pulled off onto the shoulder to change the tire and had her stand off on the other side of the car down the embankment.  A tired trucker nodded off and sideswiped their car just enough so that one second he was there changing a tire, and the next he was gone.  Right in front of her.  At least he didn't suffer.  She became a basket case.

That event changed a lot of our lives.  I miss ya, Tom.
