Right now I'd settle for Ottawa being ice free.

He may have been a bit off on the time table, but maximum arctic ice thickness has dropped quite a bit.

You believe a lot more shiat these people tell you, why not just be-farking-lieve that there is no ice, it would be progressive to do that, like Nancy -embrace the suck-Pelosi

Is this where we pretend the ice did't get thicker last year?

2013-12-15 05:44:39 PM
Yeah, this is why a politician never, ever make predictions out of their asses with specific time limits.  Even if you are right, no one is going to appreciate it when you say, "SEE??!!  TOLDJA!!"

bingethinker: Is this where we pretend the ice did't get thicker last year?

No, this is the point where we pretend that it would be ice-free if we hadn't done so much to prevent it, and OMG WE NEED TO DO MOAR!!!

Apparently it's where we pretend that there are only two data points in history.

No, he didn't. This is just another lie being perpetuated by conservatives who don't bother to check the facts.

Here is the full text of the speech Gore made about global warming in 2007 (which was 6 years ago, not 5).

He didn't predict anything. He merely cited studies that SUGGESTED that the North Polar ice cap could disappear.

Last September 21, as the Northern Hemisphere tilted away from the sun, scientists reported with unprecedented distress that the North Polar ice cap is "falling off a cliff." One study estimated that it could be completely gone during summer in less than 22 years. Another new study, to be presented by U.S. Navy researchers later this week, warns it could happen in as little as 7 years.

Damn lying Teabaggers.

It's dark now. I can safely assume that it will be dark forever.

Maybe so, but a politician should think of the sound bite.

We'll be taking about how stupid this is in another 16 years.

If the models are so accurate, why are the predictions always so dangerously wrong?  Every alarmist prediction by the global warmers is wrong.  It was supposed to be a horrific Atlantic hurricane season and there were crickets.

The arctic ice should be gone and it is now getting thicker.

Spain adopted a green economy and it ruined their country for a generation.

Global warming alarmists can't be trusted and their models are flawed.

Didn't I just read a story about Canada trying to put a claim in for the North Pole or something? I'm sure there's absolutely no real reason for that.

Al Gore Is Fat, Therefore Global Warming Doesn't Exist

Standard rightwing tactic. Hide behind an attack on a guy who made a movie. Never actually approach or refute the science.

This is why doom and gloom folk are ridiculed, because they tend to get this shiat wrong.

Gore should never had made such a statement. He gave ammunition to those who disregard science. He let his paranoia get the best of him and he turned out looking like a fool.

Leave us out of this shiat.  It's ours, the continental shelf extends up there.  Has nothing to do with shipping routes.

There are drawbacks to making statements based on worst possible outcomes, but at the same time, in order to spur people into action you need to use figures that have some shock value.  If you tell everyone that disaster is 30 years away if we don't change, most people aren't going to start worrying about it for another 25 years.

Regardless of whether or not he was right with the timetable, it's a fact the amount of arctic sea ice has been going down over time, and that global mean temperatures have been going up.  There are a ton of variables that make accurate predictions of when certain things will happen almost impossible, but spurring people into action to do something now when low-impact long term solutions can still work is better than letting everyone sit on their thumbs until disaster is inevitable or drastic actions need to be taken.

I did not know that Al Gore was a respected scientist whose opinions were valued. I thought he was just a politician. Nevertheless, he apparently understands that global warming is real, which makes him smarter than several of the above posters.

Al Gore is not a climatologist, nor well trained in science. Therefore, I really don't care what he predicts about anything related to science.

Sure, every Arctic country is feuding with each other over claims to Arctic resources that will become available when the ice melts, and sure, every country including China is making plans to exploit the Northwest Passage when it opens for the first time in recorded history, but the predictions weren't absolutely perfect, so suck is science.

You forget though. You can't quantify it or measure it, it doesn't really exist. Those averages of charts are complete bull. Anyone who uses them are a moron or an eco zealot.

Bad science is still bad.
