So how will this kill us all?  You know that article is coming within hours.

2013-12-15 06:13:02 PM
Great. Now we'll have even more superheroes.

The. Sun. Will. FLIP UPSIDE DOWN - bears repeating.

/where is your god now?

The swap could however cause intergalactic weather fronts

Who knew our sun flipping poles could affect other galaxies? My god, we could be responsible for ending some alien civilization in Andromeda.

So do we have to like tunnel into it and explode a nuke or something?

Jordi can calibrate a phase-shifted angion beam from the main deflector dish.  We'll all be fine.

"magnetic field reverses polarity" - I do not think this means what they at The Independent think it does. I'm also not seeing it in a direct quote. Yaaaaaay sensationalism!!

/sigh

2013-12-15 06:34:56 PM
No, the sun itself won't flip over, the magnetic field will reverse polarity.

We don't have to, but it might be a good idea.

So if I want to get a tan I should face the other way or something?

Like quantum teleportation, this is interesting but doesn't mean what you think it does.

2013-12-15 06:36:22 PM
He'll flip you for real.

The same nasa that blows up its employees and forgets to convert units of measurement? Those idiots know nothing.

Also, this happens every 11 years or so. No big whoop.

Smoking GNU: the magnetic field will reverse polarity.

Just like in ST:TNG!

I'm going to need a scientist, an engineer, and a black person who will sacrifice himself for the team.

Wouldn't Intra-Galactic be the more correct phrasing?

This solar event will be recorded as a single data point in the universal NMR. Time to start bathing in CDCl3 kiddos!

More anti-Christian fear mongering by the Scientists. We are just supposed to take their word that this is happening?

Have you ever thought that maybe the sun was already upside down and is now in the process of turning right side up?

So the Mayans were off by a year? Seems reasonable...

The sun's magnetic north is about to become its magnetic south and vice versa, as happens there every eleven years or so.

Happens all the time here too.  Soon the north pole is going to be somewhere near the tip of Argentina.

Earth has a magnetic field. At various points in the planet history our magnetic field has flipped. There's been much speculation on what impact this might have had on specific species who are thought to be sensitive to the earth's magnetic field and use it for navigation. But overall, not a really big deal. A volcanic eruption can have more widespread impact over time. A shift in the earth's magnetic field today would cause some problems with our technology and that would be a BFD...but it's also really unlikely to happen in our lifetimes. That being said, we don't know why/how it happens exactly and it *could* happen w/in our lifetimes. I'd worry more about a rogue asteroid though. Or a bus hitting you.

Sun does this every 11 years. We may see more of certain kinds of activity (auroras) and there's a potential for some minor problems with some satellites, but nothing compared to the problem a nasty solar flare could cause.

So basically it's an interesting solar phenom. that happens frequently and is NBD, especially since this happened in the early 2000s where the technology that could be impacted was essentially the same. Remember that catastrophe? Exactly. ;)

Stellar objects with magnetic fields will periodically have the magnetic field flip around. The article says that the sun's magnetic field flips every 11 years or so, which links up with the general solar cycle.

Earth's magnetic field seems to be a lot more churlish and unpredictable.
