I was always more partial to his masterful performance in King Ralph.  To each his own, I suppose.

Anyone remember him from the movie High Spirits?

For me he was best in The Lion in Winter.

You're not mine! We're not connected! I deny you! None of you will get my crown, I leave you nothing and I wish you plague! May all your children breach and die!

He was the classical acting sorbet in the bland soft-porn mess that was Tarzan, The Ape Man.

Fisty Bum: I was always more partial to his masterful performance in King Ralph.  To each his own, I suppose.

You know, for a crappy Disney movie, he really brought it with that performance. He was really "on", you know? I dunno if that film would be watchable without him.

I thought he was much older. I guess a half century of drinking Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter Finch and Oliver Reed under the table ages you.

/If there's a heaven and it has a drinking establishment, they, along with Andre the Giant are closing it.

He was better in Prometheus.

2013-12-15 01:48:22 PM

"Early in his career O'Toole became emblematic of a new breed of hard-drinking Hollywood hellraiser.

"We heralded the '60s," he once said. "Me, [Richard] Burton, Richard Harris; we did in public what everyone else did in private then, and does for show now. We drank in public, we knew about pot.""

And actors/actresses like Lindsay Lohan should understand: O'Toole partied hard but he also had loads of talent that he didn't piss away. Reminds me of Robert Downey Jr. A hellraiser but an awesome actor. Glad he cleaned up and became really successful.

He was quite the looker in his youth. Y'know, before the hard living gave him 'character'. That he reached such an advanced age at all was a minor miracle. His ability to ham it up was amusing, but I loved his work when he put the serious effort in.

Farewell, sir.

Peter once relayed this story: "Many years ago I had a beloved leather jacket... and I never wanted to throw it away. "I sent it to the cleaners because it was covered in blood and Guinness and scotch and Corn Flakes, the usual. "It went off to the Sycamore Cleaners and it came back with a thing pinned on it: 'It distresses us to return work which is not perfect' - so I want that on my tombstone."

First time I ever saw the Lion in Winter I had never even heard of the movie. I was backpacking around Europe with a buddy and we'd just arrived at the home of a friend of his family.

Their home was an estate outside of Edinburgh that was built out of an ancient castle.

So our first night there, exhausted from travel, we sat down in the middle of a giant stone room and turned on the BBC which was just starting the movie.

TL;DR - the first time I saw The Lion in Winter was in a castle in Scotland that could have been used as a set for the movie
