This. Even if it wasn't a spur of the moment decision, it's stellar PR at the very least.

I'm unfamiliar with the Jordanian government. In what capacity is this man known as king? On a scale of "Queen of England" to "Kim Jung-un", how powerful is he in the government?

I dont picture Obummer or either Schrub as the kind that would stop and help unless there was a camera crew. I think Clinton, Raygun,Carter, and Ford all would(assuming the dead ones was still around and the older than dirt ones was still POTUS AGE).

Nixon would probably laugh maniacaly as he stroked his fluffy cat.

I've been watching the King a long time. I saw him intereviewed on TV.  He flew a helicopter (he learned in the Jordanian military) and showed the newsman the sights in Jordan, including landing and visiting some Bedouin in the desert. He's a cool guy, US educated and has several kids and a hot wife. What's not to like? BTW, his dad King Hussein was one cool dude with a hot American wife.

2013-12-15 09:41:58 AM
Between seeing this and Queen Rania, they are my favorite royalty.  You'd never see Obama do anything like this unless it's for a camera crew.

Ehhh, really? Bush is rather handy in a farm/ranch sort of way and would probably help in a situation that calls for a shovel. Obama, for better or worse, loves to portray himself as community-oriented, so at worst it would be a great photo-op for him.

Reagan I'm not so sure, he was probably too cagey after the assassination attempt. Carter definitely. Ford probably, but I don't know as much about him.

Honestly, any politician these days should be keenly aware of the vultures and albatrosses circling them with their photomothingies. Spreads on Twitter like wildfire.

I've been in Kuwait since August. Arabic culture is  very different. But, one thing I have learned is that most Arabs would give you the shirt off their back. I'm from the south, and the people I've met epitomize southern hospitality.

Strongly religious? Check
Drive big cars? Check
Very nice? Check

He's probably about halfway between those two examples you cite.  He is the head of government, the military, etc. but requires support from the tribes for legitimacy.  There's also a whole East Bank/West Bank dynamic that make elections weird.  I could write a whole paper about this but am tired.  Google 'Jordan election reform' and/or 'Palestinian Jordanian relationship' for some idea of what he's dealing with.

Strange men pushing on cars is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical automotive pushing.

This is quite a development, considering how hierarchies usually are in Arab countries.  Not particularly egalitarian. And it was not so long time ago that palestinians were gunning for jordan's kings.

When I still lived in DC (for a decade) there was a motorcycle cop who was killed in a traffic accident.  That particular cop had served the dad (King Hussein) for many years as part of his security detail when visiting DC and then prince Abdullah had gotten to know the guy as he talked motorcycles with him and the other cops on the detail.

Abdullah flew to DC and took part in the motorcycle processional, as part of the guy's honor guard at the funeral.  He never drew any attention to himself and most of the press didn't have an inkling of what had happened until he was on his plane on his way back home.

I thought that was pretty damned cool of him and besides, he has a hot wife!

I think that King Abdullah has a giant of a dad to do proud, and I think he
has a pretty good chance of it. My great uncle got a motorcycle honor guard,
damn it's dusty behind these Harleys, but it was the local bike clubs that saw
him off, he was the plant manager where they all worked, he gave them a fair
chance and they did him proud. I had the impression that Abdullah would have
fit in well honoring an old friend like that. I don't know how things are going to
shape up around Jordan, but I think that he has great depth and strength similar
to his dad's and I certainly wish him the best of luck.

Prince Harry might do it, but he's a bit busy leading disabled vets to the South Pole atm, and his elder brother does fly a rescue helicopter after all.

But even if this was a bit of a PR thing, it shows King Hussein knows what people want from a leader.  It's best that monarchs remember they have responsibilities that go with all the rights, or else.
