Yah, I'd say she tried, eventually. Won't ease her pain.

I never would have thought that someone was related to someone else who died.

This shows the importance of friendship. If she had a good group of friends, she wouldn't have an empty life that needed to be filled with the Hail Mary shot of a son she had essentially never met.

Witnesses to events like that 'see' or misidentify all sorts of things. Like the people who thought the dust and debris being ejected by collapsing skyscrapers were explosives.

You know, this wasn't twa flight 800.

103 was confirmed terrorism, blown up by a bomb in a radio.

Was it Ringworld that posited that not only is luck real but it's a genetic trait?

Hypothesis: This woman is one of the unlucky, she passed on her unlucky genes after mating with an unlucky guy and the alleles combined into one REALLY unlucky kid.

Procedure: Comp this lady some chips in Vegas for a few weeks and chart her progress. Also use a really lucky bastard, like Paris Hilton or Kevin Federline. Compare.

At least she could become a suicide bomber and avenge his death by blowing up... by blowing up...

Who's left to blow up since the Libyan regime changed and the fake cancer bomber guy finally died?

Wow, her life sucks.

You didn't read deep enough.  Niven left a lot of outs - especially in the sequel.

Of course it was... engineered into humans by the Puppeteers via the Birthright Lotteries.  Teela was one of the innately lucky products of this scheme.  I can't believe I remember that.

Okay, but think about this a further step - she waited 45 years before looking for her son.  Her son would be 45 years old if he was still alive. That's basically middle age. Prior to 45, the chances of her son having died prematurely from a disease, car accident, murder, overdose, or some other tragic circumstance would be significant.  It's of course sad for her, but she must have thought in the back of her head, there is always the chance that he may have died earlier due to some tragic circumstance.

Does the fact that her son died in a very highly publicized tragic event make it any better or worse?

So much for grief counseling! I always hate that when they say about some tragedy that grief counselors have been made available.

You're right. But it goes to a whole new level when she learns that her son was killed by some terrorist farkbag in one of the most highly tragic and publicized terrorist acts in aviation history.
