Considering the bands that have played there, I wouldn't call it a hipster joint - even if one of the artists is Amanda f*cking Palmer.

They made a running joke out of this pub starbucksing thing in the movie The World's End. Me being in another country, I didn't know it was really an issue, but then again I'm not surprised that corporatization is a problem overseas too.

They'll still go there, but ironically, of course.

This.

It's not your land, it's not your building.  If you want to keep it 'cool', buy it yourselves.  I'm sure Gordon Sumner would be able to give you seed money for a kickstarter.

Yet, most of the gigs they've got coming up in the next few weeks still have tickets available. So, no, not actually that popular (and frankly the gig list looks pretty dire).

Slick corporate drinking establishments are the absolute worst conglomerations of douchebags.

Yeah, the pub conglomeration is an awful thing. It's pretty much exactly like if Starbucks just took over existing coffee shops and kept the name and decor instead of building new. So you can walk into your local small town pub that hasn't changed in a farking hundred years and all of a sudden it's farking TGI Fridays inside. I'm shocked that arson hasn't skyrocketed frankly.

Let's hope they keep their hands off the wonderful pubs in the Grassmarket.

This was a documentary, people.

I hate "Save This Bar" campaigns, even if I like the bar. The fact is, the people who own the bar don't even want it, so why should I give someone MORE money to save a place I've already given money to? Nope. I'm no mercenary capitalist, but fark me if I can't stand a shiatty independent business plan.

This is why I only drink at home...alone.

Buchanan Street is Glasgow is doing good trade, even if it's from the tourists' money.

But, yeah, Dublin once had a rosy future like that before the Celtic Tiger's back was snapped.

No true Scotsman would drink there.

I can't think of one there that is big enough for a chain to think it's worth purchasing. In saying that, that big place on Victoria Street - I have no idea what it's called today (Finnegan's Wake?) - is ripe for a chain, if it hasn't already been bought by a chain, which it may have.
