Yeah for some reason I'm less disturbed by this relatively minor school shooting incident and more disturbed by the number of fat cops clearly playing soldier with their paramilitary SWAT uniforms and military customizable assault rifles, especially given that everything was long over and done with by the time they showed up.

Ugh. I hate to say it, but we're only going to see more of this. When parents spend their kid's entire childhood teaching them that they can do no wrong, sheltering them from the consequences of mistakes, and fixing problems behind their back, they're eventually going to make a mistake that Mommy can't fix, and they won't have any idea that such a thing was possible, and they'll have no idea how to handle it like a regular person would, and so they'll completely lose their shiat.

I can understand that.  That being said, a decent 'vanilla' yoga program would be miles cheaper than a lot of other PE activities, as well as potentially helping the students taking it with a bit of calm and focus  during their day as well.  Win win.*

When I was in high school, I was on the debate team.  I was also pretty nerdy and picked on mercilessly.  What I endured would definitely be characterized these days as bullying.  I also was on the rifle team and the archery team, so I knew my way around weapons.

I never, ever once thought about coming into the high school and killing kids.  Never even fantasized about it.  Also was a big video game player.  Granted, it was Atari and Intellivision, but still.

I really don't understand this.  Why do kids these days seem to take rejection and social isolation as an excuse to go murder kids in their school?  Is there any reasonable explanation for this?

The idea that it is kids who are bullied who commit school shootings is a massive myth that the media often jumps on as an easy first answer in the days after a shooting.  Many mass shooters, especially the columbine kids, were not bullied loners who use rejection as a motivation.  Instead, they are often relatively popular, more likely to be bullies than bullied, and have clear psychoses that for whatever reason are either not diagnosed properly or are not effectively treated.  Check out the book Columbine- it spells out all of these issues in pretty clear detail.  It's not an easy read but it is eye opening about the number of ways police and media screw up school shootings.

No, of course not.  There is no sane rational for it.  It's interesting how people go on and on about trying to find reasons things like this happen, but when you have someone whose brain is this miswired the reasons are completely illogical to anyone else.

The Newtown kid did in-depth research on school shootings before his rampage.  Sadly, I suspect the reason there are more shootings like this now is perhaps because of the notoriety it achieves has an attraction to them, they identify with other shooters, or, for no logical reason, simply think its a good idea.

In the coming days we'll hear about incidents in this kid's past that point to severe mental illness.  Now that he is dead, privacy laws don't apply.

It's also interesting that there are no studies on the role, if any, anti-psychotic drugs play.  For example, its a well known paradox that antidepressants raise the risk of suicides in teens.  Some shooters have been on, or recently withdrawn from antipsychotic drugs.  And prescriptions of these have increased greatly over the past 20 years.

Obviously there is no lone reason, but one wonders...
