I would actually.

And we're done here.

But seriously, I waited tables in college and you learn a lot about the people in your neighborhood. Especially these assholes:

I'm sure the university would have accepted that as payment for my books.

I worked five retail Christmas seasons working my way through college (yes, five, shut up, that's why)

My empathy tank is still overflowing, and I've just recently gained enough Christmas spirit back to stop pooping in Salvation Army Sousaphones.

Making it obligatory is probably dangerous, but there's no reason a few years of service shouldn't be used to pay for a college education, like the GI Bill, or pay for a house, so a young person could at least start out in adult life with some equity, instead of massive amounts of debt.

Banks will make sure that never happens, though.

2013-12-14 12:56:21 PM
National service would be more useful. Waiting table just teaches you the world is full of assholes but you already knew that.

Good luck with that. Obama once suggested a non-compulsory civilian peace corps and - this might come as a shock - about 1/3 of the country ran around smearing themselves with feces and declaring him Hitler2.

I definitely would've signed up for the CrazyCorp to put those people into the camps.

There's nothing you can "mandate" in America that rich people can't get out of.

2013-12-14 01:33:55 PM
I'm okay with this.

Waiting tables is a valuable life skill and teaches humility and patience and that other people are assholes.

What bollocks. The Ultras have a religious exemption, and a hatred for the state of Israel, all of it save for the welfare money, which they quite enjoy.

2013-12-14 02:01:47 PM
Great!  Let's have the government plan everything from cradle to grave!  Education, health care, moral choices, religion, reading material!

And what better country to emulate for this form of modern fascism than Israel.

Now we just need a big brother state to fund us and keep our grossly inefficient system above water. Anyone know how to say "can you lend us a hand?" in Mandarin?

Getting old will teach you patience and I learned that people are assholes long ago. Especially waiters, those guys are the worst.

I believe you're misunderstanding the point of the article.

Nope, every swinging richard inverted or otherwise needs to have their ass on the line. It's the price of freedom.

2013-12-14 02:07:57 PM
Everyone should work with the public once in their life.

It will help them be less dickish when they are the customers.

Been there done that.  You can learn the same thing from working any customer service related job however.  Hotel front desk is one of the worst (not as bad as working for the airlines however).

2013-12-14 02:08:47 PM
fta A required year on the front lines would not just be a refresher in simple good manners, but the reminder of the underlying purpose of those manners: Even in a privileged dining room, this is a crowded, uneasy world, and being considerate of each other at the moments our lives unavoidably intersect can smooth the rough edges just a little bit.

So instead of teaching our youth to kill people, we should teach them the importance of being nice to people? Why do you hate America?

2013-12-14 02:08:57 PM
Health care program.

2013-12-14 02:09:22 PM
That sounds an awful lot like forcing people to work, although judging from some of the waiters and waitresses I have known, not a lot of work, grudgingly and belatedly done, after you are kept waiting yourself for an hour and a half.

But to tell the truth I am only in this thread because of the reference to the Israeli army.

Did you know that Doctor Ruth Westheimer was trained as a sniper by the Israeli army?

"Yah. that is so. (makes her famous gesture with the index finger of one hand and a ring formed with the thumb and index finger of other hand) I was trained to always hit the target."

2013-12-14 02:09:30 PM
Yeah, having waiters who are drafted rather than employed have got to be good for business.

Yes, let's never propose that citizens actually help make their country a better place to live.  After all, true patriotism is to drape images of the flag on your SUV and buy velvet paintings of crying bald eagles superimposed over the burning Twin Towers.

Remember, these colors don't run!

both are correct. But the fact that you want to deny the omnipresence of assholes makes me think you're probably an asshole.

While I think everyone would benefit from time working in a restaurant or in retail for some time, you honestly can't force it on people.  Kind of gets in the way of that whole freedom thing.

/But you do have the freedom to not take any job if you want.
//Just remember the rest of us have (or at least, should have) the freedom not to have to cover your lazy butt.

2013-12-14 02:18:17 PM
Sounds like something a douche from Madison would suggest.

2013-12-14 02:19:41 PM
Some folks go to college and get a degree where they DON'T have to wait on tables for 10 years until their first novel is published.

Now, if they made it a class at one of the vocational high schools....

The problem was in the execution.  That was around the same time he started up the hotline to report if your neighbors were spreading "false rumors" about Obama.  Some pretty tone-deaf shiat from our betters.

2013-12-14 02:20:27 PM
I never waited tables but I'm always nice to servers because I'm not a raging asshole.

Why?

And wouldn't that take jobs away from people who can only get service jobs?

2013-12-14 02:22:12 PM
First paragraph from FTA: "When I was a teenager waiting tables in a series of Italian eateries of wavering quality, I would have leapt at the chance to replace myself with an iPad, as Applebee's has recently rolled out. The meals I served back then were generally not "cooked" so much as they were "poured from a slit in a bag and reheated," and the only thing that made me sadder than people ordering the food was people liking it. That flashing electronic device at each table may sound disheartening, but it's less depressing than an actual human pretending she likes working at Applebee's."

This told me three things:

1. Author would have been willing to become obsolete in the job place to save herself from discomfort (In an article which hypocritically states that it's a vital character building experience that everyone should go through).

2. Author is a food hipster who is insulted that people eat at restaurants and god forbid that they enjoy it.

3. Time to stop reading here.

At the age of 18 all able bodies should be marched off to boot camp. Atleast for the summer after high school.
call it an adult training program.

Are you calling restaurant workers lazy? I hope you like phlegm on your burger.

2013-12-14 02:27:19 PM
Required outright, no.  Required to use services, yes.  Waiting tables, making coffee, bagging groceries, picking up garbage...basically any unskilled labor.  Either get your card punched by doing it for other people for a little while, or do it yourself.

2013-12-14 02:28:05 PM
I think 18 is too old. I think middle school is a fantastic time for boot camp

2013-12-14 02:29:48 PM
Now this is a telling tale. Mandatory service now means a six month stint in the restaurant industry.

/start defunding the military.
//we now have waiters to take your place.
//They've seen it all and are able and equiped to handle it.

And at the age of 18 all who aren't special needs people should take Calculus classes. If people who aren't ever going to have to do 100 push ups while some guy screams at them have to do it then everyone should know what an integral is.

Servers need to get over themselves. This is kanye level whining. Plenty of us deal with the public.

Nah, I like 18.  The only have 7 more years of childhood, and they are approaching their physical maturity, and can usually keep from falling into tears if they get yelled at.  Under 18 is still a baby.

2013-12-14 02:31:20 PM
It's called involuntary servitutde, genius. It's not allowed by law in the U.S. They ONLY time we can be forced to serve is when both congress and president have declared war, and that time is also called a "draft".

ahh, good to be free.

No national service for anything.     Not everyone is cut out for the military.   Don't waste the military's time, nor the kids time.

As for waiting tables,  it would take a twit to suggest that everyone should try it.
herp-derp article.
