It's the judge's job to play devils advocate. It's mentioned somewhere in tfa.

Funny, I always thought it was the judge's responsibility to hear the facts and weigh his decision based on those facts.

There's usually a lot of back and forth where the judge will have the attorneys clarify their arguments

Please, please, please, release him!

Blago was comedy GOLD!  His hair was good, too.
Sadly, the other former governors of Illinois will miss him when he's released.

If they overturn his conviction, would he get his old job back? Because that would be a headline goldmine.

Blago was actually better than Quinn. Quinn can somehow turn everyone against him.

There are precious few facts in a court case.

"If I understand your position, Earl Warren should have gone to prison, Dwight Eisenhower should have gone to prison. ... Can that possibly be right?"

Well, Blago may be in a minimum security prison but this Judge is maximum trolling.

Legal analysts told the newspaper the court has a tradition of playing devil's advocate, and Friday's proceedings aren't necessarily a good omen for the defense.

Admittedly, "devil's advocate" *is* much more genteel way of putting that.

Blago was impeached and convicted in the Illinois legislature by a vote of unanimous-1, or as he and Patty put it, by his political enemies.
They'll still claim he should walk based on "everybody does it."

Part of any competent judgement (about anything; this is not solely related to the judicial system) is examining the situation from all possible angles.

A judge is being given two different stories; one from the prosecutor, and one from the defendant. He's going to hear both of them try to explain their side in great detail. His job as a judge is to think at the problem a little sideways. Poke and prod the arguments set forth, to examine their merit. If a person says "I was here." the judge might ask "What were you doing there?" in order to determine the truthfulness of the person's original statement.

A proper rationalist will try to defeat his own arguments before making them known. The judge might come to a decision based solely on the evidence presented by prosecutor and defendant, but that judge must then try to "appeal" his own argument in his head - judges that have all their cases overturned at appeal won't be judges for that long.

/If all judges were rationalists, however, we would have far fewer innocent men in prison...

Yeah, it was way too light.

Look sarcasm aside we have WAY too many political criminals walking or getting light sentences while judges and DAs choose to "make an example" out of kids for selling dope or hacking a shiatty farking website.  The nation would be well-served with a few of these shiatbirds doing the perp walk and ending up in REAL prison.

Um, no.   Reforming the way the system works is the answer.  This dickbag did what ALOT of politicians do.  However, the way he did it and his hubris and morally bankrupt character put it front and center.   H

As much as Blago, which was $0.  Blago's prosecutors even had to cop to the fact that they couldn't trace money to going to Blago in their closing arguments

True he should have been Hanged, drawn and quartered on the capital lawn. Live tickets 5,000 and 25.00 pay per view with all the money going to fix the state budget.

That's just it.  Blago never managed to get dollar one.  He's an egomaniac and a conniving weasel.

But as Illinois corrupt politicos go, he was an inept fool.

Impeach him, yes.  Strip him of his law license, yep.

14 years in fed custody?  Nope.

I've seen so much worse in Chicago and they are still running the show.

For subby, Blago is shady, but not slim.  Even his hair is fat.
