(Automotive)   NHTSA poll says that a quarter of all motorists admit to driving faster than the speed limit. The other three quarters live in New York, L.A. and Washington, D.C. and have yet to experience going faster than 25 mph   (blogs.automotive.com ) divider line

kd1s: I'm in that 25%. I know the highways in the U.S. were built for 70MPH or better. I remember when they started the 55MPH idiocy in answer to the fuel crisis in the 1970's. And I dare you to get on I-95S in Rhode Island, once you get past Providence, if you're not doing at least 70MPH you're gonna get run off the road.

And I do wish we built our highways the way the Germans built the Autobahn. The Autobahn is built for very high speed and is several layers deep before the top coat of concrete.

Why is it idiocy? Driving 70 consumes an assload more fuel than driving 55. That means less oil for your children, more pollution, etc.

The US will never build roads like the autobahn, primarily because y'all are too cheap to pay for it. You want better infrastructure and lower taxes in the same breath.

ausfahrk: lack of warmth: ausfahrk: Where I live, nearly everyone drives 5-10 miles over the speed limit, but normal, not like maniacs.

Usually only a problem when you get the idiot drivers willing to race everyone and run up hard behind slower or stopped traffic before braking.

I was driving home from work one night, going only 30-35 in a 40 because the roads were slick ice when I watched an idiot hit two cars.  I was only going that fast because I had the lane to myself and had the lights timed, so I didn't have to worry about stopping.  A young idiot in the left lane got pissed because I passed him while he sat trying to take off when he got a green.  So he raced ahead, only to not be able to stop and slammed into two cars waiting for the next light to change.  As he realized he was then in trouble, I was easily going around the wreck and going on home.  Speed is relative, what you do with it, is what decides your next moment.

Do you ever get in the far left carpool lane, when all of the other lanes are totally open, and drive exactly the speed limit, then feel all smug about it because you're following the letter of the law?  'Cause I'm trying to find that asshole.

It was on a 5 lane road called Dort Hwy, I was in the right lane, I passed him at I-69 interchange and he wrecked into two cars sitting still at Court St intersection.

Thanks for stopping to check if everyone was ok.

Wasn't necessary since the accident wasn't bad enough to tow any of the three cars.  He was nearly stopped when he hit, but wouldn't have been close if he hadn't tried racing to begin with.  They may not even bothered with taking the cars in to the body shop.  I've seen enough accidents to know when I'm not needed, as I am not a police officer and they likely wouldn't need a witness, that was one of those times.

Except that on Sunday afternoons when the old fart casino crowds are heading home you won't be moving for shiat once you get past New London.

ShardingGreat: All traffic build up is caused by the assholes in the passing lanes driving 50 mph as they pick their noses and vacantly stare off into the distance. These lost causes are aided and abetted by other assholes in the lane or lanes beside them running the same speed and NO ONE CAN FARKING GET AROUND THEM. That is all.

You are angry because somebody violating the law prevents you from violating the law?

Dude, any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.
