Too bad for the seals, but thankfully FOX is still illegal in Canada.

Love this stuff! It's my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby.
To me it's like a growing addiction that I can't deny.

Ironically, this would actually help seals. This would lead to farming them, which would mean more of them and would help their numbers. See: buffalo.

With the number of Newfoundlanders working out there I can see this being a huge seller in Alberta if only for a taste of home.  I'm a bit biased because I don't like the taste of seal meat but I really don't think the wider world is going to buy it in any appreciable quantities.

The meat of animals who eat fish is often terrible. I learned this the first time I shot a diving duck.
Vegetarian ducks are much tastier.

Nobody would give a damn if baby seals weren't cute.

While perhaps keeping a lid on their numbers at the same time. I remember that some time ago there were a whole bunch of save-the-seals campaigns, eventually leading to so many preservation efforts that some areas had become overpopulated with seals.

I think 'terrible' in this case is a matter of acquired taste.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: Mmmm. Mercury poisoning.

Exactly; this is remarkably similar to the Japanese government' funding of whale and dolphin meat sales in stores and inclusion in school lunches. Too bad the mercury content was 200x or so over safe levels, and the spokesman for this project in the town where the dolphin slaughters take place ended up with mercury poisoning. Too bad so said.

However our current Canadian regime is probably betting that mass brain damage will just result in more votes for them.

So, how does it taste? I tried ostrich a few weeks ago, for the first time, and like it. It's closest to beef tenderloin, only slightly leaner and lighter. As it's so low in fat you have to either cook it very quickly or very, very slowly. I browned it and then served in an Indian curry sauce. It was delish.

Farming animals that eat meat isn't economical.

Judge: Killing and eating a bald eagle is a serious federal offense. You're looking at serving a very long sentence.

Defendent: Your honor, I was lost in a national park for 5 days and it was the only way I managed to stay alive.

Judge: Well given the circumstances, I suppose I can be lenient and let you slide. Just out of curiosity, how did it taste?

Defendent: It was a bit like a cross between manatee and spotted owl.

If you're against the seal hunt, you're either a moron, or a morally consistent vegetarian (Which isn't meant as an insult).

The seal populations aren't in danger in terms of extinction/endangerment, but they absolutely destroy vital fish stock when the seal population booms (vital to us...). There's not a lot of non-mineral resources to use that far north, that's why the native populations hit upon the seal hunt as a solution.

The only reason seal hunting is at all an issue is because seals are cute. Well, cute or not, they're a food source for the indigenous peoples of the Canadian north, and who the hell are you to tell them to change?

And yes, I know it is commercialized; they have no less right to commercialize their food source than any cattle rancher.

Seals are like chimps.
Cute and cuddly when young, then they turn into mean, nasty poo factories.

Not really. Maybe it was just that I was expecting to taste duck, not fish. I'd try seal meat if it was available. I have nothing against it really.

I would really love to try seal meat. I bet it's delicious. Probably very fatty though.

Fatty is one of the best descriptors of good meat.

Mmmm seal meat in gravy over potatos? Hell yes.

seal meat is chock full of the good Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that we supposedly don't get enough of. It's a rich-textured meat, very flavorful but can have a slight fishy taste.

The article doesn't say, but I thought the EU also bans seal products also.

With many countries banning seal imports, it is not surprising that Canada is trying to sell more domestically.

It's about time. I tried seal a few years ago and really liked it but there is no cheap or easy way to get it unless you live on the east coast.
