eddievercetti: FirstNationalBastard: eddievercetti: Not a bad episode, still don't like the CMC episodes except the Cutie Mark Origins

CMC had some great episodes in S2.. Family Appreciation Day, Ponyville Confidential, Sisterhooves Social... and even the Dash/Scootaloo episode from S3.

I enjoy them as side characters, not the leads.

I think they work as both, but it's context-dependent. As side characters, they're a great means to give the Mane Six new problems or opportunities to interact with each other, and add many opportunities for comic relief. When they appear as leads, I try to remember the original target audience for the show. In addition to heroic figures they can look up to, kids also need characters to whom they can relate as slightly-less-mature versions of themselves, in much the same way as we (as older fans) regard the Mane Six as slightly less-mature versions of ourselves. The CMC make the sorts of mistakes kids make in kindergarten, just as the Mane Six screw up like grad students and professionals. The stakes are smaller -- the fate of the world never depended on your performance at the talent show, the parade float, or getting picked to carry a flag -- but back when you were a kid, it sure felt like it.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I also learned that just because senior management's in town, that you, in order to keep your job as coach/manager, shouldn't change how you manage a well-functioning team1. If you change the way you motivate your team, your workers will rapidly burn themselves out (and waste a lot of effort doing things that look flashy but don't have a hope in hell of working) in order to keep their jobs. The situation is exacerbated when other teams work to undermine your team for personal advantage. Office politics and burnout lead to retention problems that jeopardize the project, forcing you to pitch in and throw everything together at the last minute, and the best-case outcome is that the hastily-completed deliverable ships successfully and senior management remains blissfully ignorant that anything was ever amiss in the first place.

1 I can't believe I just described the CMC as a well-functioning team. But they did manage to ship it2.

Twilight Farkle: FirstNationalBastard: I wouldn't think Filthy gets those hundred jars of Zap Apple Jam for nothing, or just because a contract states he has to. I'd bet he still is able to turn a tidy profit on it. Sell it out of season to tourists or something. And I forget whether he's just a Ponyville mogul or an Equestria mogul, but if his financial empire covers all of Equestria, he probably exports that jam to other regions at a hefty markup.

However, you're right that he still understands how the business works and isn't afraid of the work, but Diamond Tiara will wind up being the Brian France/Stephanie McMahon that ruins everything.

Yeah, we're basically in agreement here. He's not taking the hundred jars because he feels obliged to eat a loss on it, nor is he doing so despite the fact that it's probably not worth his time to do so. The way I see it (having reviewed the scene), he's taking only a hundred jars (I'm assuming he could buy the farm) because he's obliged to take no more than 100 jars. Whether he makes a few bits by reselling them profit, whether those bits even show up on his balance sheet due to rounding error, whether he just hands them out to his friends, or even if he just likes to have zap apple jam for breakfast every day of the year doesn't matter. He's got bigger business deals to work on, but he never forgets to make good on a contract, even if neither he nor the Apples need it anymore.

As for Diamond Tiara, I always thought of her as Paris HIlton: inheritor of wealth, but no useful talent (apart from the fact that both here and in Ponyville, wearing a tiara and being born with a silver spoon in one's mouth does qualify as a life calling...) Conrad Hilton founds the Hilton hotel chain in 1919. His son, Barron Hilton, builds the business and takes over in 1966. (In the human world, the point is moot; the Hilton hotel and Harrah's casino chain were sold and the family's wealth is protected by transferring most of it to a charitable trust, and there are ...

See, I'd wager Filthy thought of buying the farm, but realized that kicking the beloved old lady and her family out of the grand old homestead would be bad for PR. Plus, the Smiths' various apple products are second to none, and that crazy old coot is the only one who knows how to make that jam correctly, especially since the next generation of jam makers has just begun their training.

I'd also bet Filthy took note of how the Flim Flam Brothers were received when they took over Sweet Apple Acres.

Filthy Rich didn't get that way by being a dick to everyone else. He really ought to communicate to DT that getting everyone to be your friend is how you grow your business, not being a jerk for no reason.

/even Filthy Rich would find Romney's vulture capitalism distasteful

I'm okay with this. The only time we ever actually see Filthy Rich in the show, he'ss telling Diamond Tiara to get with the program for the Zap Apple Jam, of which he got a cut, presumably for bankrolling the Apples' farm back in the day. Tiara's the self-entitled one, and Spoon's the sociopath. Filthy's OK by me.

The meta-lesson, and it'll probably be lost on the core demographic, but it shouldn't be lost on the adults, is the riff on Andrew Carnegie's notion that it's only but three generations from shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves.

(To be pedantic, it's four generations in the show: Stinkin' Rich is Filthy Rich's grandfather, not father.) Stinkin' Rich started the business of reselling the jam, we don't know what happened in the next generation, Filthy Rich is generation three, and still comes back to collect a hundred jars of jam because that's what the contract stipulated. Even though he could buy the farm outright for pocket change, he's a pony of his word. It'll be Diamond Tiara, who grew up feeling entitled to wealth without understanding where it comes from, will be the one who ruins whatever the family business is.

Strolpol: //seriously though, what the hell are Diamond Tiara's and Silver Spoon's talents? I honestly want to know how the hell those cutie marks came around.

Silver Spoon hangs around because she's a social climber and because Diamond Tiara's dad is (quite literally) Filthy Rich.

Applejack proved that it doesn't matter if you're an orphan as long as you have family. Scootaloo and the CMC will eventually prove that it doesn't even matter if you have family, as long as you are family.

Also, does Scootaloo live in an abandoned house or a really small orphanage?

Assuming, she's (as many seem to believe) that she's an orphan?

Based on the animatics shown at SDCC, today we can determine whether Diamond Tiara or Silver Spoon is Worst Pony. :-(

Silver Spoon is clearly best pony, except she's only best pony in a different series.
