The problem with atheism and PR:

It's kind of like how the Catholics elected the emperor Pope when they could have chosen the current one.

FTFA: Dawkins effortlessly demonstrates his expertise to his philosophical opponents.

No he doesn't. He's a very good biologist. He's a terrible scholar of religion who has never stopped assuming everyone worldwide is a 19th century Protestant. He's awful. He has absolutely no training in the field at all and it painfully shows.

Considering that mainstream right wing and Christian media outlets like to portray atheists as child molesting, amoral rape fiends who will steal your soul and walk you hand in hand into Hell with them, I can't imagine why people would complain.

And, no matter how much of a dick Dawkins can be to people, he doesn't hold a candle to people like theAmazingAtheist, a misogynistic dickbag. (NSFW link)

Again, it seems that using anti-theists as spokespeople for atheists does a disservice to atheists.

doglover: It's kind of like how the Catholics elected the emperor Pope when they could have chosen the current one.

The College of Cardinals elects the Pope.  Ironically, Benedict (Emperor Pope) was responsible for quite a lot of Cardinals that elected Francis.  Paul VI (1963-1978) and, to a lesser degree, John Paul II, appointed most of the cardinals that elected Benedict.  Benedict was the last of the old European order of Popes.  Francis is the first of a newer global order.

Cardinals over the age of 80 cannot vote in the papal election.  There were only 109 of them when Francis was elected, and Benedict appointed 66 of them.  Without Benedict, Francis probably wouldn't have been elected.

Was anyone else annoyed by the smugness of the article's author? Particularly when it came to the jabs at khaki pants?

If you're going to take down someone for being smug, condescending and unfunny, perhaps writing a piece that's smug, condescending and unfunny isn't the best way to do it.

OK then, Atheists. I'm an atheist and I really could care less about religion. But I like arguing with people on anonymous Internet message boards.

Yep - should be over any time now.

Because it keeps intruding on my life. Even here in socialist Canadastan.

Religious beliefs are like testicles; some people have them but people shouldn't wave them around in public.

Packham's entire complaint boils down to Krauss "displaying open contempt for misinformed people."  That's his crime, apparently.  He's butthurt that Krauss dismisses the willfully misinformed as, well, misinformed, and somehow thinks people will mistake him for Krauss.  I'm pretty sure nobody will ever mistake that clown for Krauss.

But what's the alternative to ridicule and contempt- forbid them from public office?  Burn them at the stake?  Torture them?  Jail them?  Put them under house arrest for the remainder of their lives?  Exclude them from doing business in the community?  Force them to pledge oaths and allegiances to prove they're not traitors to the "one truth?"

Oh, no...Packham just wants Krauss to be nice to them and pretend they're not misinformed, of course, because that's worked so well in the past.

Go on, keep talking about atheism. Keep spreading the doubt. Keep spreading the message that "none" is a religious option.

2013-12-14 12:07:55 AM
The representatives of any group are often most vocal and sensationalist with repeated argument on the same matters until being derisive. As a group, atheists are doing better than ever, and this will continue because, while the representatives may be smug and bursting with condescension, no one shoots doctors for performing medical procedures or little girls for seeking an education or passes legislation to codify religious beliefs or so much as condemns folks. Random member #105 might want to do some of the latter two, but, no matter how vilified atheists are or how spited representatives are, we are rather damn good people. Swaths of other groups are often horrible.

wildcardjack: Go on, keep talking about atheism. Keep spreading the doubt. Keep spreading the message that "none" is a religious option.

It's odd that people in the US have to take that option. In many progressive Western countries  children are born without religion, live without religion and die without religion.

2013-12-14 12:10:19 AM
Well Madalyn Murray O'Hair certainly held back the progress of Atheism for decades. She used the movement as her own personal cash cow. When Larry Flynt was being held in a Psych ward and being put on trial for commitment, Madalyn tried to make a move on taking over the Hustler publishing empire. Wotta gal.

It's only a surprise that no one had snuffed out the foul old harpie before her time finally came.

It's always been an option. You think atheism is something new? Seriously?

Atheist 13 year olds have been declaring themselves smarter than their religious parents for thousands of years.

Wow... I really like that Mencken quote... mainly because that's pretty the same example of the standard that I employ in my life.

I always say:

"I have no more desire to tell someone that their beliefs are stupid than I do to tell them that their kids are ugly.

But, when you start telling me that your kids are cuter than mine, or telling me that my life is empty because I don't have kids... then YOU have opened up that can of worms."

And that's the thing with Christians... It's constantly "You NEED this! You NEED this! Your life has no meaning without this! I'll be praying for you!"

I once had a Christer at work literally tell me "...but that's the thing, you don't" when I told her I lived a very meaningful life wiithout any belief in god(s).

"None" is a very viable religious option in all western countries except the USA and Turkey.

You don't either.
I am an agnostic.

I've actually ran into Christians that refused to believe I'm an atheist. I can't possibly be! I must have turned my back on god because I'm mad at him or something. What? Don't be silly, it's not possible that you don't believe in him. EVERYONE does.

2013-12-14 12:28:06 AM
Someone smarter than me once opined that non-believers were not smarter than believers, they only believed in something different.

/been trying to wrap my skeptical head around that one for years now

Are you agnostic to Santa Claus, Bigfoot and that little green man that lives at the bottom of my garden?

It's that "in" part that strikes me as disingenuous.  Atheists believe something different, theists believe in something different.

UseLessHuman: Facts Vs Beliefs
in
The Battle of the Universe!

Yeah... beware of facts. Lots of what's fact today will be incorrect in a generation. Knowledge has a half-life. Between demographic and technological shifts, things being outright wrong, and knowledge getting refined, most facts will be at least somewhat wrong in the future. I remember that in the university library the nursing books had a sign saying something like "materials over 5 years old should be used for historic reference only.

Beliefs, OTOH, can be stupid today and remain stupid tomorrow.

Do you seriously mean to tell me you've been on FARK 6+ years and you've never been in one of the threads where people discuss the difference in meaning between 'atheist' and 'agnostic', and how they're not mutually exclusive, independent terms?
