BravadoGT: so it's friends without the girls?

i thought that was qaf?

ok, not gonna lie here, if chandler would've taken the book out of the freezer and read to joey, at the time, i'd have thought it was cute, now, i have actualized my inner perv and would want snuggles too...

What's the longest running show he's done since "Friends"? Did any of them even make it a full season?

2013-12-14 01:11:54 AM
So it's's a show about roommates, played by an actor who plays a roommate?
A guy who plays neuroses?
Where can we find a couple of washed up has-beens, that can take the Seinfeld thing and make it look like a Neil Simon play?
Oh, where?
Could it be more obvious?

Even worse, Ed Helms is going to be starring in a Naked Gun reboot. Surely they aren't serious.

Go On, Perry's last attempt at a TV show, has some pretty impressive numbers.

The Pilot drew 16.1 million thanks to the Olympics.   By the first real episode, it was down to 9.73 million.  It only took another 3 weeks to drop below 6 million for the first time, and it just kept on dropping from there.  The desperation Courtney Cox cameo got it back about 5 million for one week, but the week after that it was back down to 2.45 million.

That's a 75% drop in viewership over the course of a single season (85% if you start from the inflated post-Olympics number).  No wonder it wasn't renewed.

"... has received a script commitment plus penalty."

WTF does this mean? Do you pay a penalty now for not being able to come up with an original idea, because that would be cool!

Once again, they're remaking something that was a product of its time... This has been remake, or the jokes have been reworked so many times, there's nothing left. The original show was funny because it was...(wait for it)...Original!

It's not even because it's Matthew Perry. I can't think of a single person who could bring is back to the screen that would be funny.

I think it means he gets paid a certain amount if the show doesn't go into production by a certain date.

So he's got a contract where he gets paid even if people wake up and figure out that the show is going to suck? Must be nice.

While I find Mr. Perry reasonably appealing -- I liked his work in "Go On" and that stint on "West Wing," for example -- I don't think he's old and weather-beaten enough to be Oscar Madison.

I'm also wary of vanity projects like his. He does THIS and THIS and is the STAR?

Moreover, with gay and lesbian situations general acceptable at all levels of televised entertainment (sports being the obvious exception), I think a little of the spice that came from the "Odd Couple" of a generation ago is gone.
I know there was never a gay subtext, but it seems like in a new one they'd always have to be denying there is. Which would get distracting.

Originality left TV many years ago...... This could be funny. The premise is used up but the comedy can be there if used in a modern setting. TV has had very little original content since the 60's... Reality TV aside. Original but terrible.

This is a sitcom. Nothing new here but not the bachelor.

When I read the headline, I thought "He might make a good Felix, but I bet that he wants to play Oscar."  Lo and behold.
I thought Mr. Sunshine was pretty funny, but that may have been because of the supporting cast.

Ha, I thought the exact same thing, in those exact same words.

Maybe it's just my perception of him, but it seems like all he does is play Chandler in everything he's in. Chandler runs a sports arena, Chandler goes to therapy, etc.

They have two "Felix" actors, and no "Oscar"... just one Felix who will be attempting to play Oscar. Yay. This rendition is doomed from the get-go, despite the excellent cast of actors involved. This is a vanity project, with Perry taking on a role he is wholly unsuited for. Unless Paul Reiser hits his Felix completely out of the park (possible, but not likely), this "Odd Couple" will be off the air in less than three episodes.

To be fair , the character of Burk reminded me of a weaselly little prick that I use to know. So perhaps I'm naturally biased.

Considering TV started out by poaching shows from radio, how much originality was there to begin with?

/And radio poached from plays and novels

I dunno, I only watch like 5 shows now but TV is a lot better now than when I was growing up, even when you take out all the reality/game/talent shows.

Reiser isn't playing Felix. Perry is cowriting the series with the guy who co-wrote Mad About You with Reiser.

/I had to read that paragraph a couple of times myself to make sense of it.

That guy isn't being tried for war crimes?

They could use a jewish caricature in the role though. They should  justbite the bullet and cast Ross.

That's true, the shows I grew up with back in the day were freaking AWFUL if you see them today. Exhibit A: "Three's Company". It was a huge hit. I thought it was hilarious back then because I was 10, and there were only 4 or 5 channels. I caught a rerun on cable, and it was just embarassingly bad.

Now you have really good series that are well-produced, with depth. Even some reality shows are fun to watch now and then, if you treat "Duck Dynasty" as a sitcom (realizing that a lot of it is scripted) it's still funnier than any given sitcom out there.

to be fair, if they played it as two guys living together, "looking for love" and *ahem* failing horribly?  who end up back on a couch knocking back a beer during MNF, it could be a decent one-season misadventure show where at the very end they realize they're looking for the stuff their roommate does in the women they try to date...
