It's sucks he's leaving, but he's got my respect.  He kicked ass for a long time, was always classy and left on his own terms.  If he comes back that'd be great, but if he doesn't he'll still be considered one of the best of all time.

This is UFC - how do they not have a tournament to crown the new champion?

Better now, when you have a crop of talent consistently putting on good fights, than the days when guys like Dan Hardy were getting title shots. Hendricks/Lawler is now for the belt, with Condit vs. Matt Brown's replacement (maybe Shields?) for the next shot. Shame that Maia got smothered by Shields, or he'd be right there too.

Injuries.

Also, how weird is it that Bones and Aldo are now the longest-tenured current champions (Aldo is if you count his WEC defenses)?

If GSP stayed then Hendricks was going to get a rematch, so it makes sense to have him fight for the vacant title.  Lawler is a good opponent because he's on a three fight winning streak, is exciting to watch and hits like a truck

So, it makes sense.  And now I'm curious who Condit will be fighting.  Dana said he'll know by Monday, but possibly by tomorrow.  Winner of whoever he fights will likely get first shot at the new champion.

This has been about the worst-kept secret in the sport for at least a year.  His head and heart haven't been in it for a while, and he's said repeatedly that he gets crazy-obsessed with training camps.  Best to go out on his own terms - staying in this sport when you aren't that into it will only lead to injury.  Heck of a way to go out - on top for so many years and on his terms.  Sport is poorer without him though - dude was an amazing ambassador.

Besides the twenty-seven pro fights, numerous injuries, insane training camps and the fact that he can retire rich, in full control of his faculties and young enough to enjoy it all?  Seriously, I wish more champs would go out this way as opposed to hanging around until it's too late.  I wish him all the best and hope he never comes back.

Yeah, if you've followed his career, Georges is a bit of a headcase (see the Serra brick story for an example). He probably suffers from a legit anxiety disorder or some shade of OCD or something. He's talked a lot in interviews over the years about persistent insomnia and intrusive/repetitive thoughts, etc. On Rogan's podcast not long ago, he mentioned losing blocks of time (they settled on alien abduction as the explanation), which could be a result of TBI. For somebody who has been in the sport for so long, he hasn't taken a ton of punishment to his brain (other than the first Serra fight) until his last couple (Condit's headkick, which visibly wobbled him and rendered him unable to recall the last couple rounds of the fight, and pretty much the whole Hendricks fight), and he's had kind of a lot of injuries as well, just in the past 3-4 years (torn groin in the Alves fight, the destroyed knee that made him miss most of 2011-12, the eye injury vs. Shields). Even apart from whatever is going on in his personal life (and the gay rumours are so silly; dude loooves him some thick black girls), that's a lot to deal with for years and years. He's clearly no longer in his prime (post-knee reconstruction, his previously-unstoppable takedowns have diminished), the division is well-stocked with talent, and he really has nothing left to prove. Dude never ducked anybody, and always represented himself and the sport well. Classy champ. He'll still be an all-time great even if he never fights again.

This.  I also like him because he started out with karate, which doesn't get a whole lot of respect from most MMA fans.  He supplemented that other styles obviously, but watching him you could really see some of the core precepts of karate in what he did.

It sucks because he was a great fighter, fun to watch, and as far as I could tell, a class act. But MMA will go on without him, the UFC will be fine, and hopefully GSP will get whatever his issues straightened out in short order. Whether he returns to fight again or not, I just hope he has a good life.

If I had to guess, he'll focus on training other fighters, rather than return to fight again.

Georges St. Who?  Nobody in my promotion has ever fought by the name of Georges St. Pierre.  The simple fact is that if you don't fight when I tell you to, where I want you to, no questions asked.  So when Georges St. Pierre told me he didn't want to defend his belt against Snowy the Killer Polar Bear on an Arctic iceberg at UFC 172, right there, I knew this man would never win a title in my organization.  There is no proven connection between brain damage and head trauma, and if St. Pierre wants to give up his dreams because "I was blind for four of the five rounds", then he doesn't have what it takes.  I want guys who will fight for meat, and that's what Snowy wants.  Meat.  Lots of meat.  Thirty-five pounds a day of meat.  That polar bear is my champion for the future.

2013-12-14 09:22:11 AM
He's earned the right to take time off or retire and I'm glad he did it by abdicating his title.  I seriously think he's been suffering from post-concussion syndrome (he's complained about memory loss, insomnia and a few other things that point to it).  Despite the fact that he's been a boring fighter, he's still a class act.

2013-12-14 09:24:06 AM
Too bad, he's been my favorite fighter for years. He's been fighting in the UFC since 2003, and he's been champ since April 2008. Class act, and a real martial artist at heart.

The guy literally put everything else aside so he could pursue being the best in the world. I can see how that would wear down on you after a decade or so.

Cool, an MMA thread. Can someone please post my Tapology picks for me in the UFC on Fox thread? Same user name. Going to the fights live and at work until they start.

Regarding GSP, cheers to him for doing what he thinks is best for him, despite attempted bullying by Dana, et al. However, I disagree with all the fairytale ending BS. I know he was planning on doing it before the Hendricks fight, but walking away after what many consider a loss when you're facing the biggest challenge as a champion isn't exactly going out on top. It's pretty much saying "I'm taking my ball and going home."

I don't know if I'd call it bullying; he was just making it crystal clear that champions don't sit on the sideline unless they are injured. Although, in the old days, all you had to do for time off was ask for more money.

This.  Like the guy's fights or not, he's pretty much done it all.  And he's reached that exact point where you start taking a little more persistent damage every time you fight, where you probably can tough it out but you really shouldn't.  Time to go put his feet up, and have a real life for a change.

Dana and the UFC were acting like asses that night. This is what GSP said during the French version of the press conference...

"
What happened on the 16th of November, after the fight... I waited for the doctors for a very long time because I was supposed to get stiches [on my face]. They finally showed up and gave me the stitches, and I had already had time to shower and change - I was wearing a tie and everything.

So once the stitches were done, I have the press attaché for the UFC, that works for the UFC [in my changing room], so I stand up, and I ask, "Where's the press conference?". And she [the UFC press attaché] tells me "Oh, you don't need to go to the press conference; it's OK". So I said, "No, I have to go to the press conference because there was some controversy after my fight and I would like to explain myself and help clear things up". And then she said, "No, no, it's OK, you don't need to go". And then I said, "No, no, I want to go," so I started to walk to go to the press conference and she screamed at me, "Georges! You're not allowed to go; you're not supposed to go". And I replied, "Oh yeah? Well I'm going anyway!".

So I moved passed security, because I knew something was going on; and that is true. I swear that it's true. I SWEAR it's true. So I arrived on stage at the press conference and I had no idea why everyone was white as sheets [white as a ghost]; people were looking at me, they were white [as ghosts], they were surprised to see me, and I didn't understand why. And then I realized, maybe something had happened. So I sat, and I did the press conference, and afterwards, because I had no idea what had happened, and then afterwards, with my friends, I was told that there was a rumor about me going to the hospital in an ambulance."

Dan remains being a scumbag.

GSP is the greatest UFC champion.  I think he was a textbook example of how to be a complete bad-ass dude without being a dick or having a need to show off.  With him gone, there is no reason for me to even pay attention to UFC anymore.  Dana White should be exiled out of my home state of Nevada and sent back to Assholia for being a classless jerk to GSP, especially when GSP said he was feeling the effects of fighting.

GSP owes no one anything.  It's his body, his life; he brought lots of fans to UFC (and prolly some, like me, will exit as fans of the sport when he leaves) and did everything he needed to do to raise the sports profile.  Dana White can swallow a bowl of Ebola dicks for all I care; he should have been ridiculously supportive of St. Pierre after the fight by saying "GSP is a tremendous fighter and, even though I disagree with the result, he's a hell of a champion and obviously did what he needed to do to get the win.  If he needs some time off because this was a very costly fight for him, or he needs to reset and think about things, then he by all means has more than earned that right.  We'll support whatever he wishes to do, although I hope I can convince him to have a rematch, but as champ he's more than earned the right to decide the best course of action for him."

See how easy that is, White?  But no, you had to slate off your best marketable champion.

I hope you have the best in store for your life, GSP.  You are a great inspiration to many and fair winds and following seas to you.
