This battleaxe has an IQ higher than the idiots that keep voting for her and that is just farking sad.

This is actually a republican idea- subsidize employee pay below a certain threshold. Then you could justify doing away with the minimum wage. It's a win-win! For employers anyway.

They aren't working now but then again technically none of us on Fark are working this very second either.

She's an idiot, but you CAN be on unemployment and working. Approximately 37% of the the people collecting unemployment are underemployed. Working less than 40 hours a week often qualifies someone for unemployment.

Am I the only one who thinks its unusual he name is Jackson Lee, as in Stonewall and Robert E.

While I was all ready to come in and decry this as being abjectly stupid, it seems like she just got flustered by the lack of time and forgot to include the prefix "non".

2013-12-13 02:49:27 PM
U6 "unemployment" figures count people that are "under-employed," i.e. have a job that pays shat/part-time. So technically one could give unemployment benefits to these people even though they do some work. Of course that wasn't what she was talking about.

"Let us vote to provide for unemployment insurance for working men and women."

In order to receive unemployment insurance, you have to first be employed. I.e. be a "working man or woman." But I digress.

She's black, one of those is all some need and here they got a twofer.

2013-12-13 03:02:45 PM
That was a total brainfart but you DON'T get unemployment benefits if you haven't worked. Usually you have to satisfy certain minimum lengths of time of employment, minimum lengths of time since any previous unemployment claim, have paid FICA, and in some cruel situations your previous employer can appeal your claim. You're not "unemployed" in a general sense, you're "unemployed specifically from your previous job.

So by definition, anyone claiming unemployment can be called a "hard worker" because they had to have worked before being out of a job from which they are claim unemployment.

"Working man" is a euphemism for "peasant". We thought you preferred it, but if it's going to cause confusion, maybe we should just stick with peasant.

I'm sure there is some of that, but it's mostly just simply grasping at straws.  Republicans have said sooooooo many stupid things over the past year that anything that even appears stupid to the stupid is going to be ridiculed by the stupid.

I feel like this comes up every time the monthly job reports come out, but the categories used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics have nothing* to do with whether you receive unemployment benefits or not.  You can be counted as unemployed by the BLS even if you are not receiving benefits, as long as you looked for a job in the past x days (I think something like a week to a month).

That said, you can still collect UI benefits if you work fewer than 4 days a week; you just get a lower amount, pro-rated for the days you didn't work.

* Okay, not completely nothing, but it's not a direct connection.

2013-12-13 03:10:18 PM
She's not wrong, but the House already left for the year.  They don't care.

That makes about as much sense as subsidizing workers pay with foodstamps and housing vouchers so big corporations can rake in huge profits.

oh wait....

Yup.  This is like the "57 states" meme during the last election cycle.  It sounds dumb in a sound bite, but it's clearly just a mistake or lack of proper context.  (i.e., You need to have recently worked to collect unemployment, you can receive some level of unemployment while working part time, etc.)

Going on a 5-minute speech about how a woman's body just shuts the whole thing down is not in the same league.  Pushing Creationism is not in the same league.  Etc.

He farking answered you in his next two sentences.

If you're not a chicken-farking whackaloon, the place to vote against a Democrat you don't like is in the primary.

If they get to the general anyway, then they're invariably up against some king of chicken-farkers, and your choice is between a) a dumbass or shady person with an occasional passing acknowledgement of reality, and b) an actively evil bastard who will vote to erode your rights as a woman, a minority, a homosexual, a worker, and a private citizen, and is STILL probably a dumbass or a bit shady.  It's a horrible choice, but the only alternatives are third-party (HAH!  Also that helps His Royal Highness Chickenfarker), or not to vote (again, half a vote for anally plundered poultry).

Republicans are so off the rails bad right now outside of maybe New England that any thinking person would vote for a DOG to fill an office instead.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/12/08/1261219/-David-Simon-There-a r e-now-two-Americas-My-country-is-a-horror-show?detail=email#

America is a country that is now utterly divided when it comes to its society, its economy, its politics. There are definitely two Americas. I live in one, on one block in Baltimore that is part of the viable America, the America that is connected to its own economy, where there is a plausible future for the people born into it. About 20 blocks away is another America entirely. It's astonishing how little we have to do with each other, and yet we are living in such proximity.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/09/david-simon-inequality-rant -t he-wire_n_4414454.html

And so in my country you're seeing a horror show. You're seeing a retrenchment in terms of family income, you're seeing the abandonment of basic services, such as public education, functional public education. You're seeing the underclass hunted through an alleged war on dangerous drugs that is in fact merely a war on the poor and has turned us into the most incarcerative state in the history of mankind, in terms of the sheer numbers of people we've put in American prisons and the percentage of Americans we put into prisons. No other country on the face of the Earth jails people at the number and rate that we are.

The guy is a total ignorant bigoted asshole. Believe it or not, SJL is a better rep.

And a dumbass who apparently can't read basic census data.

John Faulk, the Republican challenging 8th-term U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston, recently hinted that changing demographics give him a leg up in his campaign to unseat the African American Democrat.
Saying he has a "secret weapon," the semi-retired accountant told delegates to the Republican state convention June 12 that his foe's district has been "gentrified" and has "more Anglos than African Americans."
Really?
Jackson Lee represents the 18th congressional district, which takes in center-city Houston and a partial ring of outlying neighborhoods.
To our initial inquiry, Faulk cited the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2008, posted online, which says about 42 percent of the district's residents that year were white and 38 percent were black. The bureau's chart doesn't use the Anglo descriptive Faulk employed at the convention.
Following Faulk's lead, we looked into the district's past racial mix. In 2000, according to that year's census, the district was home then to 263,371 residents identified as black and 240,745 residents recorded as white.
So from 2000 to 2008, it looks like there was a swing toward more white than black residents.
Enough said? Maybe not.
Jackson Lee's campaign didn't respond. But Ed Martin, an Austin Democratic consultant, pointed out that according to the '08 census survey, 41.5 percent of the district's residents were Hispanic, a reflection, Martin nudged, on the estimate of white residents including many Hispanic residents. That is, the three largest population groups broke down to 38 percent black, 26 percent Hispanic white and 16 percent non-Hispanic white.

Oh, yeah, that changes the math a little.  I'm used to living in an area where the races are rather closer (a liberal town surrounded by a sea of derp), so every vote against the moron teabagger is important, even if it has to be for a moron on the other side.

Thing is, it's not a my team/your team issue, or I don't see it that way.  I don't like the Democrats really, I disagree with them on a couple of major and a lot of minor issues, and I certainly don't identify as a Dem.  But the Republicans are so god-awful that it drives me to side with whoever's against them, even though that means a party I wouldn't otherwise waste a second of my time actively supporting.  Hell, I like some of the things Republicans stand for on paper - balanced budgets, freedom from unreasonable government intrusion, and could conceivably support one who actually did those things without all the fark-the-poor-and-anyone-not-a-rich-straight-white-guy-like-me agenda - but then they nominate people like Perry.  A LOT of people like Perry.

You can see how that's bad, when it drives people reflexively to support bad candidates on the other side because the two-party system has made them the only alternative.

Have any of you actually played Fantasy Derp-ball before?  You can't all draft whoever you want.  Otherwise Michele Bachmann would be on every team.

Of the many ways to allocate politicians to teams, the most popular are draft and auction.  If there had been a draft last year, Michele Bachmann would've been the #1 pick, and would therefore be unavailable to other teams.

Typically in a draft you play it safe with your 1st round pick.  You want a consistent, bell cow producer of Derp with low risk of injury/impeachment/imprisonment.  You save the high-risk/high-reward picks for the middle rounds.  Tea Party freshman?  Majority-minority district Democrat who won election on a platform of ethnic grievance?  These are good choices for the middle rounds.

The best fantasy players don't just go by name value- that's a recipe for winning last year's title.  Smart players use advanced metrics.  Is a Senator running for re-election?  Is there a chance of him/her being primaried by a partisan ideologue?  From regional economic data to DARC (Derp Above Replacement Congressman), the savvy player keeps track of hundreds of variables.

When I was on unemployment, I worked part-time when I could.  I was required to report all income and that would be deducted from my benefits.  Of course unemployment is also for those who are under-employed.  If it wasn't, nobody would ever take part-time jobs or positions with wages a quarter of what they were once making.  Is this even controversial?

Also, the hardest, most stressful work I ever had to do in my life was when I was unemployed and looking for a job.  This is a requirement for people on unemployment.  I spent several hours every day combing job listings, had to document all of it so I could keep receiving my unemployment benefits.  And I was lucky in that I lived in a place that was cheap and was able to find something before my benefits ran out.

Her language may have been imperfect.  But make no mistake: Being unemployed is a lot of work if you expect to receive benefits (that you and your employers paid into).

This. A speech flub (57 states), and a stupid opinion stated without error, are no where close to being the same thing.

I say we replace it with a longer, more descriptive phrase. How about "Disastrously Egregious Rhetorical Passage"

Nabb1: It's fine as a term, but it's hardly a salient rebuttal or counter-argument in its own right. Usually the person using it has no intent, and probably not the capability, to articulate a cogent response to the aforementioned "derp."

Because it's not a response to a salient argument in the first place.  It's merely meant to identify the linguistic equivalent of diarrhea.

Captain Dan: Frank N Stein: Derp: This word seriously needs to die.

Sorry, Haters: "Derp" Is a Useful Term, and It's Here to Stay

--------------------------
How much does the evidence change your belief? That depends on three things. It depends on A) how different the evidence is from your prior, B) how strong the evidence is, and C) how strong your prior is...

When those people keep broadcasting their priors to the world again and again after every new piece of evidence comes out, it gets very annoying. After every article comes out about a new solar technology breakthrough, or a new cost drop, they'll just repeat "Solar will never be cost-competitive." That is unhelpful and uninformative, since they're just restating their priors over and over. Thus, it is annoying. Guys, we know what you think already.

English has no word for "the constant, repetitive reiteration of strong priors". Yet it is a well-known phenomenon in the world of punditry, debate, and public affairs. On Twitter, we call it "derp".

Nice.

But one can't simply knee jerk that response and expect it to be accepted so. Some things are rightfully labeled as "derp," but it's so often used here as to have almost no value in and of itself, at least without elaboration.

The way I heard it, people thought they were covering up for him having fallen off the wagon.  It's still weird that he was apparently able to choke to the point of passing out without the SS stepping in, though.

I don't know if Bush got drunk or really did choke on a pretzel, and I really don't care, but doctors have a saying: "Choking is a silent event." Many people, especially small children, choke to death with others feet away who were totally unaware the person was choking. (Which is why you don't turn your back on a small child with food.) So, if that is what you are basing your belief on, it's quite wrong and an assumption that you need to change as a matter of pure safety.

The irony being is that even if she had meant give working people unemployment benefits, given the median wages in this country, she'd have a point.

I honestly looked at the headline and wondered what the hell Subby was getting at.  "Working man/woman" is a generic term for someone in the working class.  It still applies if that person is unemployed at the time.  It's one of those "LOLZ caught a lib saying something stupid!" moments that makes the person who said it look much stupider than the supposed "stupid lib".
