This battleaxe has an IQ higher than the idiots that keep voting for her and that is just farking sad.

This is actually a republican idea- subsidize employee pay below a certain threshold. Then you could justify doing away with the minimum wage. It's a win-win! For employers anyway.

They aren't working now but then again technically none of us on Fark are working this very second either.

She's an idiot, but you CAN be on unemployment and working. Approximately 37% of the the people collecting unemployment are underemployed. Working less than 40 hours a week often qualifies someone for unemployment.

2013-12-13 02:46:57 PM
Am I the only one who thinks its unusual he name is Jackson Lee, as in Stonewall and Robert E.

2013-12-13 02:48:23 PM
While I was all ready to come in and decry this as being abjectly stupid, it seems like she just got flustered by the lack of time and forgot to include the prefix "non".

2013-12-13 02:49:27 PM
U6 "unemployment" figures count people that are "under-employed," i.e. have a job that pays shat/part-time. So technically one could give unemployment benefits to these people even though they do some work. Of course that wasn't what she was talking about.

"Let us vote to provide for unemployment insurance for working men and women."

In order to receive unemployment insurance, you have to first be employed. I.e. be a "working man or woman." But I digress.

Or possibly "working class men and women".

How is what she said somehow dumber that this?

"I do support unemployment benefits for the 26 weeks that they're paid for. If you extend it beyond that, you do a disservice to these workers,"

-Rand Paul Rand Paul

A congress person said something weird, and they're from Texas... hmm.

Good luck explaining this to a teabagger.

That's "freed slave" Sheila Jackson Lee, subby.

2013-12-13 03:01:12 PM
So that means we should cancel ALL unemployment benefits and require that everyone out of work spend their days doing lawn work for the rich for free.

She's black, one of those is all some need and here they got a twofer.

2013-12-13 03:02:45 PM
That was a total brainfart but you DON'T get unemployment benefits if you haven't worked. Usually you have to satisfy certain minimum lengths of time of employment, minimum lengths of time since any previous unemployment claim, have paid FICA, and in some cruel situations your previous employer can appeal your claim. You're not "unemployed" in a general sense, you're "unemployed specifically from your previous job.

So by definition, anyone claiming unemployment can be called a "hard worker" because they had to have worked before being out of a job from which they are claim unemployment.

yes rand paul is also an idiot

So Congress left town for the holidays without addressing the fact that unemployment benefits will expire for people before the end of the year, but the REAL problem is that she forgot to says "non-working."

Got it.

There's trolling.. then there is maximum trolling:

"I propose cutting taxes for the southern states by 20% across the board to encourage economic growth and jobs."

Watching Tea Party and GOP reactions - priceless

Of all the things to pick on her for, this is really weak.

OH FFS YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER MORONS SHE CLEARLY MISSPOKE

This only makes you look stupid.

You.

Not Rep. Lee.

You.

Seriously, y'all are a bunch of shiat-for-brains pretending your potato-hardest that she really meant we should give unemployment benefits to people with jobs.

STOP THAT.

Hurr durr herp derp derp har Lee sez "gib bennies to workers" har har aint she stoopid hurr.

In case the above is somehow unclear, no one with a functioning frontal lobe would think Rep. Lee intended to say what the headline claims she intended to say.  If you think she meant that, you are stupid.  If you have to work that hard to smear someone you are an utter failure at life.

Walking proof that Democrats can out-derp conservatives. Let's see some more.

2013-12-13 03:08:56 PM
"Working man" is a euphemism for "peasant". We thought you preferred it, but if it's going to cause confusion, maybe we should just stick with peasant.

vernonFL: Shes the gift that keeps on giving for racists who will always have a Crazy Black Woman to point to.

I'm sure there is some of that, but it's mostly just simply grasping at straws.  Republicans have said sooooooo many stupid things over the past year that anything that even appears stupid to the stupid is going to be ridiculed by the stupid.

I feel like this comes up every time the monthly job reports come out, but the categories used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics have nothing* to do with whether you receive unemployment benefits or not.  You can be counted as unemployed by the BLS even if you are not receiving benefits, as long as you looked for a job in the past x days (I think something like a week to a month).

That said, you can still collect UI benefits if you work fewer than 4 days a week; you just get a lower amount, pro-rated for the days you didn't work.

* Okay, not completely nothing, but it's not a direct connection.

2013-12-13 03:10:18 PM
She's not wrong, but the House already left for the year.  They don't care.

2013-12-13 03:12:12 PM
That makes about as much sense as subsidizing workers pay with foodstamps and housing vouchers so big corporations can rake in huge profits.

oh wait....

This is the first honest to goodness story about a Democrat saying something dumb (or misspeaking) in quite a while.  I'm predicting not-so subtle racism and vitriol a plenty.

BTW, if you'd also like to comment on the Palin or Cruz threads, they are also still open.

I'm not sure what's so hard to understand about having worked to qualify for unemployment benefits, but my worldview isn't one that has everybody on any kind of Gubment Program receiving 'Welfare'.

But please proceed with the poutrage about 'Those People'.

"...unemployment insurance for working men and women" vs "...unemployment insurance for non-working men and women" or "unemployment insurance for our working men and women without jobs" is a slip of the tongue.

www.slate.com

"As I was telling my husb-" before abruptly breaking off and correcting herself: "As I was telling President Bush." is creepy.
