I would suspect it has something to with how the government kill Americans without a trial.

Because Freedom.

I'm sure he'll enjoy it more than he would the inside of a federal penitentiary.

Just because he violated federal law, that doesn't make what he did morally *WRONG*.   And I say that as someone who:

1. Worked in the same classified facility he did (though much, much earlier).
and
2. Was part of the infrastructure that monitored *FOREIGN* countries, back when FISA actually had some teeth.

I saw an analysis somewhere (gimme time, I'll find the link) that said something like: if he keeps leaking the current rate of documents he has in his possession at the same release rate of time, he'll be leaking for the next 40 years.

Correction: 47 years.

~~47 42 Years to Release Snowden Documents
Out of reported 50,000 pages (or files, not clear which), about 446 514 pages (>1% 1%) have been released over 5 months beginning June 5, 2012. At this rate, 89 100 pages per month, it will take 47 42 years for full release. Snowden will be 77 72 years old, his reporters hoarding secrets all dead.
NY Times, 3 November 2013:
Whatever reforms may come, Bobby R. Inman, who weathered his own turbulent period as N.S.A. director from 1977 to 1981, offers his hyper-secret former agency a radical suggestion for right now. "My advice would be to take everything you think Snowden has and get it out yourself," he said. "It would certainly be a shock to the agency. But bad news doesn't get better with age. The sooner they get it out and put it behind them, the faster they can begin to rebuild."

Doesn't matter if he's "free" or not, the documents are likely in multiple hands by now.

2013-12-13 03:45:50 PM
I don't even know what he could release at this point that could be so bad. If you're not outraged already, it's not like news that your Xbox is recording you masturbating is going to change anything. And if you're already outraged, it's not like you can do anything to stop it. It's a covert weapon that has a life of its own now, corrupting everything it touches, and nothing is going to happen until somebody decides we're the dangerous element and people start hearing knocks on the door at night and disappear.

By then it's too late, but whatever. At least I can still stream Netflix.

2013-12-13 03:45:57 PM
I feel like a few months ago they were saying Snowden should be afraid because he didn't have anything left worth revealing, and the Russians would give him up since there wasn't anything in it for them.

What the fark difference does that make?

And if only white people matter, and we're only talking about the federal government, it isn't a stretch to call what happened at ruby ridge a targeted killing/execution without trial since that's what the rules of engagement said.

Why don't they just release this "really bad stuff" and get it over with? What's with all the attempted suspense building?

2013-12-13 03:48:26 PM
I don't know what I have to be afraid of. I don't spy on people.

And I'm not the very visible public face of a government that spies on its allies and still expects them to trust us enough to work with them and back us up if we need help "liberating" another country.

Funny how I've thought of this shiat, but the federal government apparently hasn't.

GEN. KEITH ALEXANDER: This is analogous to a hostage-taker taking 50 people hostage, shooting 10 and then say, "If you give me full amnesty, I'll let the other 40 go." What do you do?
MILLER: It's a dilemma.
GEN. ALEXANDER: It is.
MILLER: Do you have a pick?
GEN. ALEXANDER: I do. I think people have to be held accountable for their actions

Hey, we let the guy execute the other 40 hostages but we punished him, so it was all worth it.

Yes, and when the press got those leaks it was all released and spread over every paper / web page possible (as it should have been). And liberals were rightly outraged over it.

Don't act like this all magically started under Obama because even I don't think you're THAT stupid.
I never said the spying did "magically start" under zero. It just became no big deal and something the press would cover up now that zero is in office. The only possible reason I could want a republican to take the white house is to see you liberals start caring about the bill of rights (well except for the 2nd) again.
I didn't I'd actually have to spell it out for you. I guess I gave you more credit than was due.

Foreign affairs is quite the biatch.

2013-12-13 03:51:29 PM
There was a time when we believed in our government.  We believed that they had our best interests and the interest of the country and its principles in mind when doing whatever it was we did.  We thought only the "other guys" did shady stuff that made our stomachs turn.  That was when we were stupid.

The Snowden thing has always been weird regarding how I felt about it.  On the one hand he is a traitor.  On the other hand so was George Washington.  There are things people have long thought to be happening, but others would say things like "I have a tinfoil hat for you".  In the 1% of documents that have been released we have been show that the American government does not give on single shiat about American civil liberties, privacy, or otherwise.  Often done under the guise of "the terrorists", it has little or nothing to do with terrorism.

It's a classic example of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

//we, in this case means many Americans

2013-12-13 03:51:54 PM
I would LOVE to know what Snowden knows. Even a little bit of it. I bet there's some good shiat there.
