The problem here is that Leslie Nielsen simply cannot be replaced.  No offense to Ed Helms, but the franchise is dead in the water without him.

Ed O'Neill.  End of story.

/plays a cop well
//parallels to Nielsen starting with drama and switching to comedy
///can play the straightman and deadpan roles better than anyone else alive

I hope this movie makes $0 at the box office.  There is absolutely no reason to reboot a film that was already done perfectly.

This, this and THIS

The same thing with the Pink Panther movies. You just cannot replace Peter Sellers.

It's not so much that it's upsetting that that they're remaking the movie, it's the choice of using Ed Helms that makes it so wrong.  It defeats the whole purpose.  The deadpan jokes only work it's done by a serious, otherwise suave person.  Helms is an (average) goofball.  Who you need is Malcolm McDowell ala his recent sprint commercials.  If Ed Helms were delivering those lines, it would fall flat because you believe he would actually say that.

SubBass49: Sideline gripe:  Did you realize that the first Naked Gun film was only rated "PG-13", while Exit Through the Gift Shop is rated "R?"  what this means, is that as an art teacher in a high school, it would be OK for me to show my students the first Naked Gun film without permission slips, but to show Exit Through the Gift Shop I would need prior approval from the school principal and signed permission slips from all the parents.

Pretty farking ridiculous, right?

Romeo and Juliet ('68 version) is a 10th grade staple around here.  It's PG and shows underage tits.  No approval required.

Pfighting Polish: ...

See, the problem with all of this, though, is that deadpan humor is subtle.  And the problem is, it's really hard to sell subtlety....

I think that's part of the reason why we're seeing some really good TV and not generally seeing it in theaters.  TV, with 8,000,000 channels, can have some that afford to take the risk on something that might not be easy to sell but might be really good and might create trust in a network's product (AMC with  Breaking Badand  Mad Men, HBO with its slate of programming, etc.).  Movies don't have that luxury.

Which, again, is why I'd rather see this as a TV show, but also, again, is why it won't happen.

All good points against why this should be made, especially with inferior talents of Ed Helms. The guy couldn't even hold his own hosting SNL.

/Next week, Timmy, we'll learn why cows look forward to being milked.

DB: cheer: Pfighting Polish: Also, what made the show better than the movies was that it took on a challenge that the movies really didn't:  They didn't make Drebin a bumbling fool.  Drebin is actually pretty smart in the TV show.  The bumbling cop bit made the gags too easy and predictable.  Not having that to lean on made it a much smarter show.

SO MUCH THIS.

I found the movies to be meh at best, but the TV show is one of my all-time favorites.  Instead of having Drebin fumble around with dopey looks, we got a comedy where everyone is playing it 100% straight.

I do think Ed O'Neill could maybe do it, and whoever said Andre Braugher is definitely thinking along the right lines.

There you go. That's why Airplane! and Police Squad work and things like Scary Movie 8 don't. It's the irony of everyone behaving like a completely bonkers situation is totally normal. Don't cast a comedian.

/We're sorry to bother you at time like this, Mrs. Twice. We would have come earlier but your husband wasn't dead then.

To a lesser degree, that's the same magic that made Clue work, and Murder by Death. Deadpan hilarity. We need more of that. Hell, I'd pay good money to see Airplane! (the original cut) in theaters again.

Pretty funny sequence of posts, right there.

This was actually the joke.   "In before Pink Panther references...."   Too subtle for FARK?   I actually think Martin would be better as Drebin than he was as Cleusau.

What he said.

Besides the fact that they've done the "parody movie" thing to death and failed miserably, Nothing that made The Naked Gun work is reproducible now. Leslie Nielsen was a dramatic actor before Airplane!. His deadpan delivery sold the comedy. It's just not going to happen.

Exactly... Helms is funny, but this isn't his role. The studios don't understand that sometimes movies just 'work', and the people involved can be a magic ingredient that can never quite be replicated.

Other movies are a product of their time, and only worked in the era they camme out in, but this one really IS all about cast.

Funny trivia: Airplane! was Leslie Neilsen's first comedic role. You'd think he'd been doing it his whole life.

I would have been far happier if they had just decided to make more episodes of  Police Squad!

Six episodes of the show got made and it was one of the more underrated comedies of all-time.  There were too few  Police Squad episodes, and too many  Naked Gun movies.  Plus, I'd far rather have good TV than a bad movie.

Of course, media companies would far rather have a bad movie than good TV because people pay for bad movies, while good TV doesn't net the same kind of revenue.  So, yet again, what's best takes a back seat to what's profitable.

I hate life.
