Pfighting Polish: I would have been far happier if they had just decided to make more episodes of  Police Squad!

Six episodes of the show got made and it was one of the more underrated comedies of all-time.  There were too few  Police Squad episodes, and too many  Naked Gun movies.  Plus, I'd far rather have good TV than a bad movie.

Of course, media companies would far rather have a bad movie than good TV because people pay for bad movies, while good TV doesn't net the same kind of revenue.  So, yet again, what's best takes a back seat to what's profitable.

I hate life.

Agreed. A new TV show could work. Wasn't one of the main complaints about "Police Squad" that the gags came too fast and people who weren't paying full attention missed them? Now that we have DVRs I don't see that being as big a problem.

Brokenseas: I recently watched Hot Shots! and Part Deux! on PVR.  They didn't age well at all.

Jim Abrahams and the Zucker Brothers haven't made a good movie in over a decade.

On the other hand, I kind of like Steve Carell's version of Get Smart.  I also like Rowan Atkinson's Johnny English.

To sum up ... this movie will in all likelyhood suck.  But maybe it will be an amusing diversion for 90 minutes.

Hot Shots: Part Deux still works for me, even if you don't get the specific references like Rambo with the bow and arrow, or Ah-nold firing a .50 cal machine gun one-handed. Charlie Sheen had the right attitude to be able to play it deadpan but still make sure the joke got through.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/11/29/131661180/remembering-le slie-nielsen-a-master-of-the-art-of-not-being-funny

"For most of my career, I've been a dramatic actor. But ever since "Airplane!" and "Police Squad", and "Naked Gun: from the Files of Police Squad", everybody thinks I'm a comedian. But that's not quite true. A comedian is someone who says funny things. A comic is someone who says things funny. Well, I'm neither. I'm someone who says unfunny things. I say unfunny things in an unfunny way. And somehow it seems to end up funny. You see, for some reason, over the years, maybe it's the way I look, or maybe it's the sound of my voice -- [ starts to crack up ] -- but I have been cast in, as authority figures -- [ regains his composure ] -- well now, for example, say I'm a high school principal. Now in a drama, I would say a line like this one, I'd say: "Come in, Jimmy, have a seat. There's something I think we should talk about." Now, in a comedy, I would deliver the same line, but I'd say it like this: [ same voice ] "Come in, Jimmy, have a seat. There's something I think we should talk about." See what I mean?"

brigid_fitch: Lipspinach: ThatBillmanGuy: CarnySaur: They could still do a Sledge Hammer movie...

Why haven't they?! Sounds like a better idea than this.

That I would love to see.

Me:  "3 people all raving about this Sledge Hammer thing?  Never heard of it."
*Googles*
Me:  "OMG, that sounds friggin' AWESOME!"

/Everyone watched Miami Vice in my house, so I'd never seen it.
//Off to Netflix!

It was.

Mugato: exparrot: Honestly, the thing that killed the earlier movies for me is when Leslie Nielsen stopped being the straight man and decided he was supposed to be funny.

Yeah, the ideal role for him was the straight man in "Airplane!".  He was also funny in a more comedic role in The Naked Gun in a different capacity but then people who didn't know what they were doing just made him a clown in all the later films.

So if they want to replicate "Airplane!" (impossible), they need to cast a dramatic actor, not known for comedies.

Like Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove.

Hollywood makes deliberate klunkers like this, specifically so they have something they can write off as a tax loss against their successes. It's all part of the accounting game, whereby no movie ever actually makes a profit.

My guess is the studio sees a hit coming, and need this to cancel it out.

Police Squad is available and highly recommended

trickymoo: Anthony Hopkins - good tone and perfect delivery, though he'd die inside doing slapstick.

Which is why the TV show was so much better.  It wasn't slapstick; it was deadpan farce.

When I got home I received a call from Mimi Du Jour.  She wanted me to come to the club right away. Since I had no idea where the Club Rightaway was, I suggested to go to the Club Flamingo. She agreed.

Leslie Nielson is rolling in his grave right now, and farting in their general direction!
How can you possibly top this scene?

We miss you, Anna. You were truly a gifted actress.

Yes it is.

Stripper: "Is this some kind of bust?"

Drebin: "Yes, it's very impressive, but we need to ask you some questions."

In case anyone is bored, Naked Gun is on HDNet Movies right now.

Also, no one mentioned Dan Ackroyd as a potential Drebin.  He was perfect as Joe Friday, which Drebin is obviously modeled after.

I dunno; it's been a LONG time since he's done a good straight man, and even his Joe Friday was not great IMO.
