*Checks out article.

Nope, still looks like a dork on a Segway.

How on earth can you ban skateboards and bicycles from a city's sidewalks, yet allow pretentious dorks to parade around on the damn things with impunity?

Segway = I think I'm cool, I like to move around quickly, and/or I just love gadgets.
Scooter = I'm too much of a loser for a motorcycle, and even I know it.

I don't get the hate for scooters. I'm a former motorcycle owner and I own a Vespa now it's a lot more use in slow moving stop and go traffic and way more comfortable when you end up stuck at red light after red light but it can still hit over 100mph when I need it to as well. Really it's a hell of a lot of fun and just more practical in general and if I don't get the manly points I can live with it and if I ever wanted to go back to a motorcycle it's the same license so that wouldn't be a big deal but I can't ever see it happening.

I wish we had the three wheel single person vehicles like they've got in japan.  I'm not sure exactly what to call them but they were predominantly used by pizza delivery services.  It had one front wheel and two back wheels.  The seat and front wheel of the vehicle could lean but the back wheels didn't.  While they may look a lot of wonky I just always thought they would be incredibly convenient little vehicles to get around in.   nihonshock.com

I noticed that too. I probably wouldn't have risked Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn for publicity stills either.

Well, I might have but then at the ripe old age of 6 when that was made, I wouldn't have been on the set making decisions so never mind.

I -love- scooters. They're so much fun. But unless you live in 1-2 cities in the US, they're just not practical. It takes a really heavy urban density, and most US cities have ample land around them so they just urban sprawl. Meaning you'll want to hit the highway or other routes requiring 60-70+ MPH, and I don't care WHAT they tell you, going that fast on 10 inch tires is scary as farking shiat. Plus my Vespa tended to get loose in the steering department over 40.  I swapped it for a motorcycle since I use mine as a vehicle replacement most of the time (still have my car but 90% of the time I ride the Triumph (for anyone who cares, '05 Vespa 150, to a '02 Triumph Bonneville, then winter hit and the carbs made me hate life so I swapped to a 2013 Bonneville, all since January, but bear in mind I'm driving a 2004 Focus I've had since it came out..)  But I loved the scooter, and would buy one in a flat second if I lived in a place where I didn't need to take highways places, but then again I love motorcycles too. It's, for lack of a better word, my 'happy place'. On a bike, just...going...

There are several trike variants. I know, off the top of my head, of the Piaggio MP3, but it's 2 in front 1 rear.  Honestly, that's just a golf cart. You can get a scooter that will do all that, probably for cheaper, and it's going to be more nimble. Only lose out on the canopy.

I've ridden in Estes Park, Denver, Houston, Austin, Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Sedona, Yellowstone, and Rocky Mountain National Park, up and over Trail Ridge Rd at 12,100 ft above sea level.  I also owned a scooter rental in Estes Park.   I've ridden a 250cc Honda Ruckus on i-77 between Canton and Cleveland, tho I would not do that again.   I know a guy who tows a canoe with his.  I do all my commuting with it, as I live 4 miles from work.  In Texas, I rode year round, and only used my car outside the city limits.  By doing that, the scooter it paid for itself in  with in 8 months with the gas money I saved not driving my truck around.  Scooters are as practical as you let them be.

santadog: Scooters are as practical as you let them be.

Disagree.

Stand by my statement of 'not practical in non-dense urban environments'.

Sure, you CAN ride it places. If you want to take only the back roads, avoid the freeways, or stick to the feeders. Which will take 2-3 times as long to get places.

My Vespa was a 250XL, so it was plenty powerful, topped out around 60, and had lots of low end grunt.  But frankly, once you crest 50, you're getting close to the cap and it's got no pickup. And 60's the absolute cap, which is terrifying on the bike of any kind, to be capped at SLOWER than highway speed...on the highway.

Same goes for my Mom's 250 Suzuki, it's terrifying to me, and I love bikes.  You're doing the equivalent of saying 'no, bicycles are practical because I can ride one from here to Vermont' without compensating for the time and effort, as well as special dispensation you need to give the thing, and the risks.

I wasn't comparing them to CARS (or, really, trucks? Maybe we should compare the gas mileage on the damn space shuttle while we're at it, of course you saved money), I was comparing them to MOTORCYCLES. If you want two wheels, a motorcycle is a much more practical and safe solution for most people looking for a vehicle replacement option, and can be had for the same price range as 'good' (i.e. non china/india deathtraps) scooters, and will get roughly the same gas mileage WITHOUT requiring ultra premium (you forgot to put that in your sales pitch btw, that while the vespas get high mpg and good power they require the most expensive fuel...).

And I say this advertising that I loved my scoot. It just isn't remotely practical for, really, any of the applications you say it is, when compared to a motorcycle, unless we're talking 500+ CC scooters, and that's dishonest and you know it.  I say the same thing about 250cc bikes, though at that low range get a scooter not a bike.  If you absolutely must have the twist and go throttle, they make large displacement scooters which would be more practical (though honestly, the tiny wheels + speeds over 50 = not really fun for me), and they make automatic transmission motorcycles (notably the Honda CTX700, which is cheap as shiat, and I would have bought one if the dealer had been willing to pretend not to try to assfark me on a trade in).

How can you disagree, because my statement includes "as much as you let them be".  For ME, very practical, because I make it so.  I can bring home 6 bags of groceries, packages from the post office, and commute to work. For YOU, not practical.  That's it.. it's YOUR point of view and that doesn't make it true.  And for your statement that I am being dishonest: Fark you, because I have done all those things on my scooter and will continue to do so.
Seriously, you are going to use needing higher quality fuel with a scooter?  Oh no, I have to pay an additional 10 or 20 cents on my 1 gallon tank of a scooter that will last me a 1.5 week of commuting.

I grew up around powersports because my father was a pro-race car driver and auto mechanic.  GoKarts, snowmobiles, mini bikes, motorcycles, boats, sports cars..we had it all.  I had my first motorcycle at the age of 9, and my father taught me how to strip it down, and rebuild it.   I'm a female who can work on motorcycles, and scooters.  I've driven just about everything on land and water, and scooters are my favorite.  For 7 years I eat, slept, and dreamed scooters because of the scooter rental I started, so please, stop trying to convince me that I don't know what I'm taking about.

A) conditional qualifiers are not an I win button. I don't particularly care how much YOU do with them, they're not really practical compared to similar alternatives. And that's the rub, it's not 'can you do it' but 'can another thing do it better and safe and is still comparable in price and size'.  Just because you can do X, Y, Z, doesn't mean it's practical. Lugging home a 60 inch TV on a scooter is POSSIBLE. But practical?

B)

santadog: Seriously, you are going to use needing higher quality fuel with a scooter?

You brought up fuel economy savings vs. a truck. So yes, I pointed out that it wasn't quite as cut and dried.

C)

santadog: And for your statement that I am being dishonest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_honesty

I was not saying you were a liar. I was saying you were being dishonest about the presentation of your facts and information to suit the point you were trying to make.  And you were. You compared fuel mileage between a truck and scooter. You commute 4 miles a day (hey, I do 2 miles).  You take facts personally, when I point out that just because you can do something doesn't mean it is practical, or really ideal.

D)

santadog: I'm a female

That's nice. Not really germane to the conversation, but ok, do you want bonus points for it?  When I say men and women are equal...I mean it. I don't care if you're a three headed mutant left hand thread bolt. In fact, I didn't know you WERE a woman till you needed to tell me. Never entered the realm of my notice.

E)santadog: For 7 years I eat, slept, and dreamed scooters because of the scooter rental I started, so please, stop trying to convince me that I don't know what I'm taking about.

You're biased. When you only have a hammer, ever problem looks like a nail. Your entire life is dedicated to scooters, so of course you say 'it CAN do that'.  It still doesn't mean it's a good solution for the problem, and that a motorcycle isn't a better one.

You haven't, in fact, responded to a single thing I've said other than to get offended and self righteous and tell me you're a woman.

I had a scooter. I have a motorcycle. For most people, a motorcycle is much more practical as a daily driver, given the limitations of scooters.  You're deeply involved with a subculture obsessed with a certain thing. Of course there are people who ignore the negatives to keep using that scoot for everything.  Hell, people say the same about me for riding a bike in the rain, and below 30 degrees.  Doesn't mean I suddenly think that it's a GOOD idea, or that I shouldn't have just taken the car. But I love riding, so I do it anyway.

But, I'm done. Enjoy the ride, hope (really, I do) the rental joint stays open. I'd love to have one in my area so I could make day rides on one.

Great_Milenko: So what's so cool about a vespa?  It's just a freakin' moped.

OK, I see the motor part.
Where are the pedals?
