According to the references I found, the standard Romanian word for Jew is "evreu" ("Hebrew"); "jidov" is more like "yid." I've never been sure why Ashkenazim call their language Yiddish if "yid" is a bad word, but perhaps it's like African-Americans are entitled to call themselves "n-words" but nobody else is.

I then am a peckerwood, and only other peckerwoods are entitled to call me that. The rest of you may call me a "worthy Caucasian gentleman." (Or something.)

Advocacy groups are incensed after a Romanian government-owned channel broadcast a Christmas song glorifying the Holocaust and calling for Jews to be burned

I remember reading this history book that talked about how we remember WWII has distorted things. That we look back and see Hitler as this huge anti-semite that rallied Germany around his cause, when in fact Europe as a whole was anti-semitic, and his anti-semitic policies actually went over better in Eastern Europe than Germany itself. Or something to that effect. I wish I could remember the name of it.

I worked with two different guys from Poland at different jobs. Both of them were in their 20's. Both told me in casual conversation that Poland had been much better off under Hitler because he got rid of the Jews and the Jews had been the real problem. They said it as if this was fact and obvious to everyone. It was pretty clear they had been brought up to believe it. Other than that, both of them were totally nice, normal guys.

We like to think like everyone in the US is a backwards racist yahoo and we get worked up about anything that could be construed as being slightly culturally insensitive but holy crap we've got nothing on Eastern Europe when it comes to racism.

Instead of my semi-coherent babbling I'll just post the wikipedia link:

The English word Jew continues Middle English Gyw, Iewe. These terms derive from Old French giu, earlier juieu, which had elided (dropped) the letter "d" from the Medieval Latin Iudaeus, which, like the New Testament Greek term Ioudaios, meant both Jews and Judeans / "of Judea".[26]
The Greek term was originally a loan from Aramaic Y'hūdāi, corresponding to Hebrew: יְהוּדִי, Yehudi (sg.); יְהוּדִים, Yehudim (pl.), in origin the term for a member of the tribe of Judah or the people of the kingdom of Judah. The name of both the tribe and kingdom derive from Judah, the fourth son of Jacob.[27]
The Hebrew word for Jew, יְהוּדִי ISO 259-3 Yhudi, is pronounced [jehuˈdi], with the stress on the final syllable, in Israeli Hebrew, in its basic form.[28] The Ladino name is ג׳ודיו, Djudio (sg.); ג׳ודיוס, Djudios (pl.); Yiddish: ייִד Yid (sg.); ייִדן, Yidn (pl.).
The etymological equivalent is in use in other languages, e.g., "Yahoud"/"Yahoudi" (Arabic: /) in Arabic language, "Jude" in German, "judeu" in Portuguese, "juif" in French, "jøde" in Danish and Norwegian, "judío" in Spanish, "jood" in Dutch, etc., but derivations of the word "Hebrew" are also in use to describe a Jew, e.g., in Italian (Ebreo), in Persian ("Ebri/Ebrani" (Persian: /)) and Russian (Еврей, Yevrey).[29] The German word "Jude" is pronounced [ˈjuːdə], the corresponding adjective "jüdisch" [ˈjyːdɪʃ] (Jewish) is the origin of the word "Yiddish".[30] (See Jewish ethnonyms for a full overview.)
According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition (2000):
It is widely recognized that the attributive use of the noun Jew, in phrases such as Jew lawyer or Jew ethics, is both vulgar and highly offensive. In such contexts Jewish is the only acceptable possibility. Some people, however, have become so wary of this construction that they have extended the stigma to any use of Jew as a noun, a practice that carries risks of its own. In a sentence such as There are now several Jews on the council, which is unobjectionable, the substitution of a circumlocution like Jewish people or persons of Jewish background may in itself cause offense for seeming to imply that Jew has a negative connotation when used as a noun.[31]

Yeah, this is straight out of Mein Kampf.:
In recent years, the extent of local collaboration with the Nazis in eastern Europe has become more apparent. Historian Alan Bullock writes: "The opening of the archives both in the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe has produced incontrovertible evidence [of] ... collaboration on a much bigger scale than hitherto realized of Ukrainians and Lithuanians as well as Hungarians, Croats and Slovaks in the deportation and murder of Jews."[33] Historians have been examining the question "Was the Holocaust a European Project?" Historian Dieter Pohl has estimated that more than 200,000 non-Germans "prepared, carried out and assisted in acts of murder." That is about the same number as Germans and Austrians. Historian Götz Aly has concluded that the Holocaust was in fact a "european project that cannot be explained solely by the special circumstances of German history." [34]

Europe was very anti-Semitic back then; always was in its history and still is today. Europe back then simply didnt cared about the Jews, and its leaders and people at the time didnt gave a rat's ass about his anti-Semitism. it is also worth noting that many countries such as Canada, US, Australia, etc refused to take any Jewish refugees that left Germany prior to the beginning of the war.

We like to look back today and point our fingers to Hitler and blame him for everything, because that makes us collectively as a species feel better about ourselves. But he was a by-product of the time and place he lived in. Hitler was not created in a vacuum.

This is why I take history with a (huge) grain of salt. I grew up in the early 1960s in a primarily Eastern European neighborhood in Milwaukee. It was no secret that the Nazis had a lot of help from the locals 'back home.' How is it that historians only figured it out "in recent years?"

My 92 year old grandmother is Latvian by birth and emigrated to Australia as a political refugee after World War 2. (Australia had not previously experienced large numbers of non-English-speaking migrants previously, and the government of the day invited immigrants from the Baltic countries to come out a couple of years ahead of the much larger waves of Italian and Greek immigrants - simply because we are 'whiter' - but that's a whole different story.)

As she's gotten older, she's returned to her unpleasantly anti-Semitic roots. It seems to me that in Eastern Europe, where the masses were generally uneducated/unsophisticated, often superstitious  farmers or labourers, there was great suspicion towards Jews, who may not have been wealthy or powerful but generally valued educating their children more highly than the local Christians. They didn't particularly like Hitler but happily belted the Jews up for him.

Grandma once said to me "I love Jesus, but why did he have to be Jewish?".
