White cop and brown kid?

Of course it was. Save the money on a trial and move on.

uh....yeah. Even in the (very) unlikely event it really was self inflicted the cop still farked up and should face charges.

We went through this last time: cop misses the gun in the groinal region on the first pat down, cuffs kid and puts him in the car.

Kid tries to take the gun out while cuffed and ends up shooting himself. Seems unlikely but possible.

If only we could hurry up and enact some common-sense gun control legislation this sort of problem could be a thing of the past.

It only took the cops about a week to figure out the cause of death.  They kept saying they didn't know how he died.  It's real shady at the least.  He was also in the cop car being taken to the station for trespassing, on the sidewalk.  His mother had called and reported that he ran away so the cops killed him.

2013-12-12 09:03:07 PM
Unlikely, eh, maybe.  Unprecedented, not at all.  Gregg Winters was a Muncie (Indiana) police officer who was shot and killed by a handcuffed suspect in the backseat of his squad car.

Oh, Durham, you so crazy.  But don't say that in front of anybody from Durham unless you've got 30 - 45 minutes for a lecture on how the violent crime rate had plummeted in recent history while the overall crime rate in several surrounding cities has gone up and how downtown has really picked up and you can't get [insert whatever thing(s) interest that person] in your town, at least it won't be as good.

In the head? In the head! How is THAT possible with hands cuffed behind your back?

Multiple gunshot suicides are rare, but possible. In one study of 138 gunshot suicides, 5 (3.6%) involved two shots to the head, the first of which missed the brain.[1] A suicide with 4 gunshots to the head has been reported.[2]

There's a security video out there of a man pulling a large chrome revolver out of his pants and shooting himself in the head while alone in a police interrogation room, and the first cop to come in says something like "fark, nobody patted him. God damn it." It should be easy to find for those interested.

Tennessee several years back. Mans death ruled a suicide because I note was found at the scene. The gun? A rifle. A bolt action rifle. And 3 chest wounds.

During my police academy we heard from a member of the state police homicide unit who talked about two suicides, one where the person used the claw end of a hammer to hit himself in the head 40+ times to kill himself, and they determined it was suicide because he was in a closed room in his garage, and there's no way where the body was, with the blood spatter, etc, that anyone else could have been in the room with him.

Second one was a guy with a table saw, ran his head into the blade once and didn't die, the second time it killed him.

Look people, I don't want to give you the impression that I'm not anti-cop like so many other vocal opponents on Fark, but it is hard for people not in law enforcement to understand how someone could be capable of shooting themselves while handcuffed behind the back.

I would like to see the report on the bullet trajectories.  If it really was him I assume they would be coming from the behind the waist and upwards. You wouldn't shoot yourself 4 times accidentally.  The whole thing reeks and we'll probably never get the real scoop.

I don't know how they could cover it up if he was shot with a service weapon, though I don't know how redneck of an operation Durham is. Unless it's a small town, I'd image all service weapons have ever serial numbers recorde. If a cop was going to use a throw away, you would think he'd take the person out of the car first.

He could have shot himself trying to jam the gun into the car seat also. It's a weird case all around.

My friend lives in Durham and he pulls this sh*t on me all the time.

The Tobacco District is actually not too bad, especially on weekdays. Love me Tyler's Taproom. And there are some unique places like Whiskey. But overall, I feel safer in Raleigh and the suburban locales. (Not that Raleigh doesn't have its moments, like that dude in the motorcycle helmet who was assaulting and robbing people.)
