My only concern with a child that young is letting them wear hoop earrings. The stud type is much safer because it's less likely to get caught on something while the child is playing.

2013-12-12 07:03:31 PM
Yes, they do. If they were Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson they could get away with wearing fakes because everybody would assume he has enough money to buy the real deal.

But a baby? Ain't nobody gonna believe a baby can afford real diamonds, so they have to wear the real stuff in case anybody tries to call them out on it.

Hahahahaha, subby went to cafemom.com expecting insight!

Well.  Nobody needs jewelry.

If my mom had gotten my ears pierced as a baby, she would have no choice but to put "real" jewelry in them. I have severe skin allergies, so putting anything but 12-karat gold or sterling silver in my ears and you're asking for trouble.

Fortunately, it works in my favor. Easy way to screen a guy I'm dating.

Yah bit you can get cheap CZ studs with gold plated posts. It's not like it has to be expensive, even if one does have allergies (which I do as well).

What both Bathia_Mapes & Benevolent Misanthrope typed to appear above. Mostly.  Only need  jewelry if one's performing & costume chair says so!

I've always had problems with gold plated stuff. Blisters and the green skin don't lie. Same if it's 10k gold.

Plating uses toxic alloys.

If they have an allergy? Yes, yes they do.

/Can't wear anything but gold\silver
//because apparently my body dislikes the abundance of cheap, cute earrings out there.

Oh don't be gauche, Subby. What am I supposed to do? Send my little darlings to daycare with costume jewelry? As if.

The toddler was wearing diamonds ... before nap time?

How gauche!

2013-12-12 08:19:36 PM
The tiara she was wearing was already stolen property.

I can wear gold, surgical steel, or titanium. Silver turns my skin green. Anything else makes my joints ache.

12 kt, 18 kt, 14 kt... doesn't matter. What matters is what the gold is alloyed with. Usually it's nickel alloys that cause problems.

I suppose if you're a modern girl, you'd have to be EXTRA careful.  I mean, blue waffles are bad enough. Green is right out.

\So going to hell for that

So you date guys for expensive jewelry?

2013-12-12 08:27:41 PM
My simple solution: I don't get my toddler's ears pierced. If she wants pierced ears later, we'll get that done when she's old enough to take care of cleaning them post piercing on her own.

Ed Grubermann: surgical steel

The dentist tried to argue that one with me when I got braces--"It's hypoallergenic!" When I came back two weeks later with a mouth full of blisters so bad I couldn't eat, he capitulated and ordered the damn gold ones (yeah, I had gold braces as kid).

Slartibartfaster: (Im allergic to anything under 18kt and ALL silver - but Im a guy, I buy my own freaking stuff I dont rely on my date to provide for me)

LOL. I wasn't "relying" on my dates for jewelry. I barely wear the stuff. But if you give me a gift, don't lie and say it's real. My fingers are foolproof!

Jewelry is important - so they can distinguish their baby blob from someone else's baby blob. They all look and smell alike cause they have the same father.

I asked the economy and the economy said, yes, toddlers need jewelry.  And pretty clothes.

No. But if you lie about what kind of jewelry you're buying me, it makes it much easier to decide to kick you out the door.

/had NO idea Fark would get so uppity about that

Do you really need a child? If so, you might want to make sure you're able to provide for it without sending it to be raised by women who couldn't make it as lunch ladies.

It is amazing how one little typo in a sentence can change its entire meaning. I also have a problem typing can when I mean can't.

Piercing a toddler's ears is exactly the same as piercing a toddler's nipples.

2013-12-12 08:42:35 PM
In some foreign cultures, babies get their ears pierced.  I could be judgmental, or I could accept that in my culture we cut pieces of babies' dicks off.

My sister in law took my niece to a tattoo & piercing place to get her ears done as they had knowledgable staff and quality jewelry. My niece was only little and it was eye opening for her to be helped by a heavily tattooed and pierced lady with her tits hanging out, but super friendly.

I gathered that after she clarified, but the original wording comes off as "screening for cheapskates" and makes no mention of the men lying about the quality. Obviously not what she meant, but you can't tell me it doesn't look that way at a glance.
