That mug sounds just like Coffee Joulies. They've been around a year or so and work exactly the same way and also change phase at 140°F. (bonus points for working the term for heat energy into the name)

Not sure what's in them, but if it was hydrogenated just right, vegetable shortening could be made that melts at 140°.

I brew my coffee at home into a thermal carafe with a set of those in it. Then often pour pour in into one of those Thermos Sipp mugs like on the Joulies web site. I had the mugs well before the Joulies. Why the joulies? The Thermos people aren't lying. Keeps stuff hot (or cold) for a nice long time. Too hot without the Joulies.

The kickstarter page for this cup, not listed in tfa, looks pretty cool.   I might be interested in getting one for myself.
