Mostly because they claim it would probably be a drag on the casino in Milwaukee creating fewer net jobs.  That and some BS about no "new net gaming"; he also tried to give himself an out by saying that all tribes had to agree to it but it appears the price isn't all that far off for them to be appeased.

Why do these guys always try to equate their fight to pass oppressive and damaging laws to the civil rights movement or the anti-slavery movement?

2013-12-12 09:47:24 PM
Um... while the thirteenth amendment wasn't a bad amendment in itself and historically did something we'd now consider pretty unarguably good, it was passed by vote-fixing, dirty legal tricks, outright bribery (mostly giving away appointed positions) and disenfranchisement of areas with a tendency to disagree to the point of the government outright ignoring the will of the voters to put people from entirely different states in certain seats.

Basically, dude may want to think his metaphor over since if you tried to pass anything that way today you'd be out of office and probably in jail on multiple felonies in weeks.  Turns out that it's not the 1800s and we're not in the aftermath of the nastiest, most internally destructive war the nation ever faced... you're kind of expected to respect the actual rule of law these days.

Forget actual history, Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote a bestseller that became a movie. That won Oscars and stuff.

Yeah, Doris Kearns Goodwin is a real historian. You know, the kind that footnotes things pretty heavily, not the David Barton kind. You should read Team of Rivals. It's serious history, and a pretty dang good book.

The 13th Amendment was passed by the Senate in April of 1864 and by the House in January of 1865. Lincoln had quite a bit to do with it. The 14th and 15th, not so much. But the 13th? Yeah, he was involved.

Exactly. He was just explaining that there isn't enough room in a book to cover all of the things you would be able to cover in a different medium, like, for example, a book.

And also, he's done so many awesome things, like Lincoln, that he had to just focus on telling a compelling story, like Spielberg. But he certainly wasn't comparing himself to Lincoln (who, by the way, was a Republican, the party of Freedom) or Spielberg (who is very rich, and therefore a wonderful person).

Doesn't discount the fact that it was a moronic comparison and perhaps the lamest excuse he could come up with on why he doesn't want to talk about how his main campaign promise has been nothing but a total failure so far.
