LOL, are we in a competition on who can elect the most minorities?

Since when are women a minority?

Thanks, Mr. Pedantic.

But how did you get my real name?

varmitydog: When Obama died, George Washington met him at the Pearly Gates. He slapped him across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the Nation I helped conceive?"
Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed."
James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"
Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Obama with a long cane and snarled, "It was evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence."

The beatings and thrashings continued as James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the socialist leader.

According to the joke, there were only 71 Virginians (Washington+Henry+Madison+Jefferson+Monroe+66)

Can the joke-teller even count?

How are Obama, the Founding Fathers AND Allah all at the Pearly Gates? Wouldn't that mean we all worship the same God and religion is just an illusion?

Also if they are all in Heaven then why are they all so violent? Is violence like that okay in your religion?

fark these pantywaists. If he'd left during a terrorism crisis they'd have jumped his bones for that.

I don't particularly care that he didn't go, really, but "terrorism crisis"? I'm going to type all of this anyways.

...

So while I don't really care that he didn't manage to pay his respects to a person he probably would have found to be politically abhorrent anyway (that's what the VP is for!), I'm just not convinced that the Boston Marathon bombings were serious enough that it required the president to stay in the country.

Were you not in the country that week? I happened to be on vacation in Key West when it happened, and I was mostly away from the news but I could still tell people were pretty tensed up by it. Two days later, no official suspects were even identified. The outcry of, "Obama is leaving us when we need a strong leader!" would've been deafening. Also, that's great that your "pure speculation" was pretty accurate, but the feds tend to want pure, unadulterated facts on a case before they close it. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that Obama's best move was to stay local.

Harold Wilson
Edward Heath

etc.

Total number of farks given by U.S. Conservatives over attendance at their state funerals: Zeee-ro.

Biggest difference between Thatcher and all of the above, to the U.S. Conservatives' minds: Thatcher's the only one they've decided to hero-worship.

Look, conservatives, who you choose to revere and admire is entirely up to you. You have every right to your choices, just like anyone does. Go knock yourselves out. But remember that it's nothing more than your own personal choice. Y'all aren't special or holy because of who you choose to admire, and within reason it's never going to be an outrage whenever somebody chooses different heroes than you did.

Does that make any sense? Thanks.

Obama should have gone to Thatcher's service. She was a major leader of one of our closest allies, and a world leader. Doing so was of little political advantage.
Obviously he should have gone to Mandela's service. He was a major leader, an international figure of peace. Doing so was of great political advantage.

That's it. Given a choice, Obama tends not to do things that are of no benefit to him politically, and on each of these he had a choice.

That and it happened the same week the attack in Boston happened. That probably had a part as well.

Either way it seems like people in the US liked Thatcher even more than people in the UK.

rnld: Did Thatcher have a State Funeral?

She did. And it was quite well attended, mostly by heads of state who had been in power when the Iron Lady was in power. All four living past presidents attended (Carter, Bush Sr. and Jr., and Clinton) and a representative of the Reagan family; and an official delegation sent by Barack Obama consisting of George Schultz and James Baker, who were Secretaries of State during Thatcher's time in office. Dick Cheney and Henry Kissinger also went, although not as official representatives (per the Daily Mirror).

It seems that Obama did what many people might have done and sent representatives who actually KNEW Lady Thatcher and worked with her personally; since she had been out of office for many decades, and out of public view for quite some time. It wasn't like she had been in office and dropped dead the same week.

I didn't take that from the white house. I took it from the Daily Mirror. Those were the people who went. If it seems odd to you that it might be more fitting for people who knew an old woman who had been out of politics for 20 years to go to her funeral which was not a state funeral and which wasn't an international photo op, and which in fact had no political benefit but was instead a show of national support--then I guess the idea of such support seems odd to you in many ways.

Most nations did not in fact send heads of state to Thatcher's memorial service, unless they were personal friends/enemies or acquaintances; Angela Merkel did not go, but sent a rep who had known her. Sometimes it ISN'T about making Amurika look good--it's about doing something nice that makes America look better.

You're wrong about almost everything in this paragraph.  She did not have a state funeral, she had a ceremonial funeral.  It was still a high honor (only the second PM whose funeral the Queen has attended, the only ceremonial funeral accorded to someone not a member of the Royal family since Elizabeth ascended to the throne), but it wasn't the same sort of funeral as Churchill got, it was the same as Diana got.

Also NONE of the ex-presidents attended.  Bush Sr. is too frail to travel far very often these days, the others... I dunno why, probably because none of them were really her contemporaries (she came to power the year before Carter was ousted, and stepped down two years before Clinton took office).

It seems that Obama did what many people might have done and sent representatives who actually KNEW Lady Thatcher and worked with her personally; since she had been out of office for many decades, and out of public view for quite some time. It wasn't like she had been in office and dropped dead the same week.

Yup.  It wasn't a state funeral and she'd been gone for over 20 years, the US sent a reasonable delegation.  I was a little surprised initially that that's all that was sent, but the funeral's non-state status and the Boston bombings that week would both account for it.

Oh, and the Republicans sent their own little delegation of a few house reps - I guess we could ask then why McConnell and Boehner thought they were too important to go themselves, this being America's greatest ally and all.

But I think she has the record for serving as PM longer than anyone else.

It's a damn mystery to me how, with the mountain of evidence saying that it's a bad idea, people continue to elect conservatives.  And not to quell any possible overreach on the part of liberals, but to take over and make sure that no one does anything, allowing well-connected, well-moneyed people to crush anyone who's not.

And "at least it's not just us" doesn't make me feel an ounce better.

Funny, after the CIA released their document dump that was called the "Crown jewels", I thought it became painfully clear that it was
Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Pearl and Cheney that proved the worldview about communism wrong...
