I like Obama, but if he doesn't start a national "Please Don't Tie Plastic Bags Over Your Heads" campaign and kill off thousands of contrarian dickhead Republicans, and start it soon, I'm going to consider this a failed presidency.

It's the usual unimaginative, funhouse-mirror tu quoque attack from the right that you're used to seeing.

Netanyahu was criticized for skipping the Mandela funeral because it was too "expensive", but it was noted that he made sure attended Thatcher's.

Apparently conservatives, after decades of Thatcher/Reagan worship, mistook this to mean Thatcher has a similar historic status to Mandela. She doesn't, and nobody cared when Obama didn't attend her funeral.

But don't let me stand in your way if you want to attack Mandela's legacy, conservatives. Go for it, with gusto.

I don't particularly care that he didn't go, really, but "terrorism crisis"?

Really?

Have we sunk so low that a handful of people dying, and a couple dozen seriously wounded in a piss-ant improvised bombing attack is going to keep the President of the United States from going to the funeral for a former head of state of our closest ally?

I mean, I can see if it was 2 days after 9/11, but this was just a couple of dudes, acting all on their own, who scraped some fireworks into pots and set them off.  Even on Fark, we knew the day after that they were improvised devices:  Hell, I got the general outline of their operation correct myself, only missing on the relatively minor details (R/C used for detonation, not cell phone or FRS/GMRS radios, Pressure cooker instead of large metal pipe, and scraped fireworks instead of BP substitute).

I have to assume the President had better information and (hopefully) more informed and more intelligent advisers, and it was pretty much immediately apparent to all of us that this wasn't some huge conspiracy but the act of one or two people:  Any larger group, and the bombs would have been bigger, or there would have been more of them, etc.

So while I don't really care that he didn't manage to pay his respects to a person he probably would have found to be politically abhorrent anyway (that's what the VP is for!), I'm just not convinced that the Boston Marathon bombings were serious enough that it required the president to stay in the country.

When Obama died, George Washington met him at the Pearly Gates. He slapped him across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the Nation I helped conceive?"
Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed."
James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"
Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Obama with a long cane and snarled, "It was evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence."

The beatings and thrashings continued as James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the socialist leader.

As Obama lay bleeding and in pain, Allah appeared. Obama wept and said, "This is not what you promised me."

I don't particularly care that he didn't go, really, but "terrorism crisis"? I'm going to type all of this anyways.

...

So while I don't really care that he didn't manage to pay his respects to a person he probably would have found to be politically abhorrent anyway (that's what the VP is for!), I'm just not convinced that the Boston Marathon bombings were serious enough that it required the president to stay in the country.

Were you not in the country that week? I happened to be on vacation in Key West when it happened, and I was mostly away from the news but I could still tell people were pretty tensed up by it. Two days later, no official suspects were even identified. The outcry of, "Obama is leaving us when we need a strong leader!" would've been deafening. Also, that's great that your "pure speculation" was pretty accurate, but the feds tend to want pure, unadulterated facts on a case before they close it. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that Obama's best move was to stay local.

Total number of farks given by U.S. Conservatives over attendance at their state funerals: Zeee-ro.

Biggest difference between Thatcher and all of the above, to the U.S. Conservatives' minds: Thatcher's the only one they've decided to hero-worship.

Look, conservatives, who you choose to revere and admire is entirely up to you. You have every right to your choices, just like anyone does. Go knock yourselves out. But remember that it's nothing more than your own personal choice. Y'all aren't special or holy because of who you choose to admire, and within reason it's never going to be an outrage whenever somebody chooses different heroes than you did.

Does that make any sense? Thanks.

Obama should have gone to Thatcher's service. She was a major leader of one of our closest allies, and a world leader. Doing so was of little political advantage.
Obviously he should have gone to Mandela's service. He was a major leader, an international figure of peace. Doing so was of great political advantage.

That's it. Given a choice, Obama tends not to do things that are of no benefit to him politically, and on each of these he had a choice.

rnld: Did Thatcher have a State Funeral?

She did. And it was quite well attended, mostly by heads of state who had been in power when the Iron Lady was in power. All four living past presidents attended (Carter, Bush Sr. and Jr., and Clinton) and a representative of the Reagan family; and an official delegation sent by Barack Obama consisting of George Schultz and James Baker, who were Secretaries of State during Thatcher's time in office. Dick Cheney and Henry Kissinger also went, although not as official representatives (per the Daily Mirror).

It seems that Obama did what many people might have done and sent representatives who actually KNEW Lady Thatcher and worked with her personally; since she had been out of office for many decades, and out of public view for quite some time. It wasn't like she had been in office and dropped dead the same week.

I didn't take that from the white house. I took it from the Daily Mirror. Those were the people who went. If it seems odd to you that it might be more fitting for people who knew an old woman who had been out of politics for 20 years to go to her funeral which was not a state funeral and which wasn't an international photo op, and which in fact had no political benefit but was instead a show of national support--then I guess the idea of such support seems odd to you in many ways.

Most nations did not in fact send heads of state to Thatcher's memorial service, unless they were personal friends/enemies or acquaintances; Angela Merkel did not go, but sent a rep who had known her. Sometimes it ISN'T about making Amurika look good--it's about doing something nice that makes America look better.

You're wrong about almost everything in this paragraph.  She did not have a state funeral, she had a ceremonial funeral.  It was still a high honor (only the second PM whose funeral the Queen has attended, the only ceremonial funeral accorded to someone not a member of the Royal family since Elizabeth ascended to the throne), but it wasn't the same sort of funeral as Churchill got, it was the same as Diana got.

Also NONE of the ex-presidents attended.  Bush Sr. is too frail to travel far very often these days, the others... I dunno why, probably because none of them were really her contemporaries (she came to power the year before Carter was ousted, and stepped down two years before Clinton took office).

It seems that Obama did what many people might have done and sent representatives who actually KNEW Lady Thatcher and worked with her personally; since she had been out of office for many decades, and out of public view for quite some time. It wasn't like she had been in office and dropped dead the same week.

Yup.  It wasn't a state funeral and she'd been gone for over 20 years, the US sent a reasonable delegation.  I was a little surprised initially that that's all that was sent, but the funeral's non-state status and the Boston bombings that week would both account for it.

Oh, and the Republicans sent their own little delegation of a few house reps - I guess we could ask then why McConnell and Boehner thought they were too important to go themselves, this being America's greatest ally and all.

Funny, after the CIA released their document dump that was called the "Crown jewels", I thought it became painfully clear that it was
Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Pearl and Cheney that proved the worldview about communism wrong...

varmitydog: When Obama died, George Washington met him at the Pearly Gates.

Allah replied, "I told you there would be 72 VIRGINIANS waiting for you in Heaven. What did you think I said? You really need to listen when someone is trying to tell you something!"

DEMENTED.

PsiChick: As I remember, we were all protesting his policies very pointedly. Admittedly, with intelligence and dignity, but the guy was farking over the country and we expressed that view.  However, we did not whine like small children and displayed a basic understand of politics

Roflmao. your memory done LIED to you. You so did so whine like small children. Like spoiled children throwing a temper tantrum. There was an awful gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, epic buuthurt and whambulances.

From severe cases of Bush derangement syndrome, to 'chimpy mcflightsuit' to 'selected not elected' to endless terrible, petty, childish sore-looserness, the critics on the left were anything BUT what you describe.

No argument from me that the teabaggets and Obama critics on the right aren't as bad or worse, but your whole " *sniff, sniff'* yes, well we were never THAT bad you see..."

That's just hilarious.

If fixing the Bush legacy, repairing all the damage he did, were Obama's only legacy....

He would still go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents.

That's how bad George W Bush was.

I had a friend at Khobar Towers. He said half the building just fell away...it was eerily similar to Oklahoma City....

The funny thing about GWB's Mission accomplished speech is this:
The day before he landed on that aircraft carrier, we'd reached an agreement to withdraw from Saudi Arabia.

Which, just so happens to coincide with one of Bin Laden's publicly stated goals.

You're freakin hilarious.

'Chimpy McFlightsuit' referred to his inane 'mission accomplished' photo-op. 'Selected not elected' referred to the unusual circumstances of the election. Yes, it's certainly name-slinging, but nowhere  near the racist, ridiculous comments people make about Obama--to start with, most of the comments against Bush had direct basis in reality, and that reality was two unfunded wars, economic policies that are so far from proven it's laughable, and outright stripping people of their rights the second you say 'terrorism'.

Mandela was head of state, Thatcher was the head of the government, there is a difference there.

WhyteRaven74: Mandela was head of state, Thatcher was the head of the government, there is a difference there.

Also, Mandela actually did some good, while Thatcher was a disgusting fascist piece of shiat almost as bad as Reagan.

Satanic_Hamster: I wonder if anyone will point out to them that Thatcher is generally hated in her own country.

The weeks following her death, the most downloaded song was "Ding-dong ! The witch is dead !", and it climbed to the top of the charts.

Thatcher was DESPISED in her country. American right-wingers are completely delusional about her popularity there.

When she died, the tories wanted her to have a state funeral. The people refused, because they recognized it for what it was, a whitewashing of her legacy, so that her politics, and therefore the tories', would be enshrined as being a full part of the identity of the country.

Still wouldn't have justified Obama insulting the British people (who refused to give her a state funeral, she was so widely despised) by attending the funeral of a crummy politician that 90% of them hated and want to see burn in hell.
I don't want my President insulting other countries all the time like that asshole Bush did.
It doesn't make me proud to be a boor, like it does trailer park trash Americans who want our leaders to insult other countries so they'll think we are badass.

I liked the joke better when Robin Williams told it. But you did substitute Osama for Obama so I guess .....

They say you should nothing but good of the dead.

Margaret Thatcher is dead.

Good.

/RWers are apparently stealing from Robin Williams ITT so I figured I'd counter by paraphrasing some Moms Mabely.

Deadbart and Co have their noses out of joint 8 months after the fact cos Obama didn't attend her funeral?

i293.photobucket.com

I think the two most over-rated and misremembered politicians of my lifetime would have to be Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher by a long shot.

I also think Obama is bright enough to know that if he left the country to attend said funeral in the middle of the Boston Bombing thing it would have just caused a different Conservative "outrage" so why bother?

Plus Thatcher was a really terrible leader who's own people popped champagne in the streets when she died. So there's that.

Waldo Pepper: It would have been a very good move from a symbolic view.

Oh, puh-lease.

You know as well as I do that had he attended, the outrage would be over him "detracting from the solemnity of the occasion" by "making it all about him"!  And just look at "all the money wasted on security"!

There is no turning off the Fauxrage Machine.  So he may as well do as he pleases.

Fark those assholes.  Let `em cry moar.

I swear to God, that if you remove the spaces in that sentence, my current log-in password for my work computer is contained in the character string that results.

No, I'm not telling which part it is.
